Laptop can't find internet on working network?
Dalo Harkin replied to Paper Moon's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Are you 100% sure that you are an administrator on this laptop - not being able to install updates and service packs is a dead giveaway for you not being an administrator. -
Is your version of Norton paid for or is it free/trial Norton is not a very strong AV/Firewall program and is prone to attacks - if it is free/trial I would recommend NOD32 or AVIRA - if it is paid for be aware that it is not that good and be extremely careful when on the net. Could be real player or Quicktime trying to update.....do you still have the programs?

Laptop can't find internet on working network?

Right is it to add a MAC address for another computer or is it for the Router itself. (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) For the MAC address for a PC/Laptop open a command window (cmd.exe) then type ipconfig/all and if you scroll to the very top it will say MAC address and will list it next to it. -

You may have to go to the routers home page - some routers (Netgear I know use it) you have to enter the PC's MAC address in order to connect to the router. It is a security feature. -
There are some fantastic reg cleaners - they serve a purpose. BUT they can cause some serious problems - it's a personal choice BUT most users should not need one.

While 64-bit processors and operating systems have been out for a while, several factors have held up adoption of 64-bit computing – such as driver compatibility issues and the mere fact that there wasn’t a lot of need for it. Thus, 32-bit systems have pretty much remained the norm among consumers. But as the benefits of 64-bit systems start to outweigh the drawbacks, Microsoft believes a big shift is now on to 64-bit Windows Vista PCs. According to a post by Chris Flores on the Windows Vista Team Blog, the proportion of all US machines with Vista running the 64-bit edition has tripled in the past three months while worldwide adoption has more than doubled in the same time frame. Microsoft’s claims are based on download figures from Windows Update, though the company isn’t giving any hard numbers. Among the factors leading to the shift appear to be the fact that 64-bit Vista machines, unlike 32-bit systems, can directly address more than 4GB of memory – an amount rarely needed in 2005 when Microsoft released Windows XP in 64-bit form. Also, 64-bit drivers are required for WHQL certification in Vista so hardware compatibility has become less of a problem nowadays. I for one have been running the 64-bit version of Vista on my main desktop PC since early June, with (almost) no issues at all. The real benefit, however, will come when more 64-bit optimized software is available and a few key ones – such as Adobe Lightroom and PhotoShop – are expected to be released this fall.

Ever since AMD announced its combined CPU/GPU Fusion microprocessor along with the acquisition of ATI in 2006, the company has abstained from discussing the chip in detail. But as always there are those willing to spill the beans and, having spoken with their “industry sources,” TG Daily has managed to get some details from them on the forthcoming chip. According to the report, the first Fusion processor is code-named Shrike and will consist of a dual-core Phenom CPU and AMD’s next-gen RV800 GPU core – though Shrike was originally rumored to debut as a combination of a dual-core Kuma CPU, RV710-based graphics unit, and an integrated DDR3 memory controller. The chips will be DirectX 10.1 compliant and are likely to debut using 40nm process technology from TSMC – which was introduced earlier this year The processor is scheduled to make a transition to 32nm in 2010, and should further help AMD compete in the notebook market thanks to the integration of CPU and GPU which translates to smaller form factors.

If you need more space in your existing one then go to add or remove programs in the control panel and get rid of any unwanted programs mainly games etc as they are 2GB+ each. and run the Hard drive cleanup by right clciking the drive in my computer and selecting properties and then the tools tab.

It will be one drive that is partitioned to appear as two and the second will have your recovery partition on ;)

August should see Intel release its latest dual core CPU model, the 3.33GHz Core 2 Duo E8600 and with it, a core update for the existing E8500 and E8400 that will see their steppings changes from C0 to E0. The Q9650 and a handful of new Xeons will launch. Early indications are that the new E8600 has plenty of performance potential. Overclockers at Taiwanese site Coolaler.com have managed to boot into Windows with an air-cooled E8600 clocked at 5GHz (using a 500MHz FSB, as the CPU has a 10x multiplier), although this did require a vcore of 1.6v.

Intel CPU Motherboards use an 8 pin AMD CPU Motherboards use a 4 pin *If yours does not have the 8 pin one connected then this would result in the shutdowns* Most PSU's do have them unless the PSU is over 4-5 years. The overclocking options are normally when you enter the BIOS they are normally the top left and will say Overclocking or Advanced options. -
You dont need the 280 GTX - trust me save the money unless you have a 30" plus monitor the 260 GTX will be more than sufficient. get the extreme GAMER not MUSIC soundcard. for the RAM get the DDR 2 1066 Reaper, will run much faster. And if you plan at running the Q6600 around 3Ghz you really need to watercool - use the H20 120 or 220 compact.

If you are seriously considering the 64bit OS then I would get the GEIL black dragon 8GB kit it's £105 from OCUK  BARGAIN As for the GPU - I am a major ATI/AMD fanboy, but for the cost to performance ratio the only thing they have done that has made a big impact is the 4850 and 4870 range of GPU's - IMHO you are far better going with what you listed being:- ASUS MOBO Q6600 RAM is really preference. and then either the 4870 and the 260 GTX - the 4870 is slightly ahead in terms of 1-3FPS at resolutions below 1680x1050 but the 260 GTX far exceeds the 4870 at higher resolutions and with the physix added (now that is something that is appearing in more games this and next year) I honestly believe the 260GTX will outlast the 4870 - if you opt for the 260 GTX just get the BFG one as it comes with a 10 year warranty, But be aware of the size of it, it is massive.

Who said you need an 800 Watt PSU lol I have in one of my pcs - Q6600 at 4Ghz (with H20 220 Compact) ASUS P5K Premium (black pearl) 2GB OCZ reaper 260GTX 8 HDD's 2 DVD-RW a load of fans and at MAXIMUM draw it goes to 400 Watt. GDDR5 is overrated - you would never use the bandwidth in the 1st place its nearly 4Ghz effective (no game in the next 2-5 years would need this and by that time the GPU is out of date ;)) Also the 260 GTX incorporates Physix and the 64 bit OS has been here from the XP days - and like I said only one company uses it - trust me when I say that no one is planning to use it - look on the MS website - I get their updates and future develpments and not even a whisper from them about 64bit programs.

Have you installed the drivers for the external on the (faster pc)? External drives are problematic at best - if it works on the older pc and not on the newer one then there is something on the old one that you do not have on the new one, that could be (drivers) your version of NERO could be corrupt on the new one.

That particular window was off a Vista machine - should be in the network settings somewhere - not used XP for a very long time - so bear with me and I will find the place in XP -
Lacky, If you go into device manager along the top on the right there is an icon that shows a magnifying glass over a pc screen - this will scan the pc for added hardware - press that and see what it comes back with. If it does not come back with anything then there is something wrong with your OS or the printer itself.
-
There seem to be many versions of the iextreme - none of which seem to have that lower a watt PSU. I think that it may be time to start completely from scratch here in terms of deleting all the printer drivers and manually removing any files.
-
May seem like a daft question but how many USB devices do you have?? and what is the size of the PSU. USB devices draw off a specific rail on the PSU and if you have a 'weedy' PSU and lots of devices it may just not be up to the job.

Have you checked that Network Discovery is on, on your settings:- Network discovery is a network setting that affects whether your computer can see (find) other computers and devices on the network and whether other computers on the network can see your computer. There are three network discovery states: •On This state allows your computer to see other network computers and devices and allows people on other network computers to see your computer. This makes it easier to share files and printers. •Off This state prevents your computer from seeing other network computers and devices and prevents people on other network computers from seeing your computer. •Custom This is a mixed state in which some settings related to network discovery are enabled, but not all of them. For example, network discovery could be turned on, but you or your system administrator might have disabled a firewall exception that affects network discovery. Network discovery requires that the dnscache, fdrespub, ssdpsrv, and upnphost services are started, that the Windows Firewall exception for network discovery is enabled, and that other firewalls are not interfering with network discovery. If some but not all of these are true, the network discovery state will be shown as Custom. http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/QueryWS/GetOpenContent.aspx?assetID=e5ea1a76-ff69-4779-87d0-5df9fcbd8308&DocumentSet=en-US&RenderKey=XMLThe Sharing and Discovery section in Network and Sharing Center -
I would go for the Antec 300 Gamer series case and save yourself £30, and then use the extra money on a 260GTX (a 260GTX will last longer in terms of games because it copes much better with harder games such as Crysis, it is a close call between the 4870 and the GTX260, but I had the same dilemma a week ago and opted for the 260GTX ;)) MOBO and CPU - they are fine - very similar to my spec ;) right as for the RAM I would go with the OCZ reaper series as they are extremely overclockable with an ASUS board and a Q6600 :) HDD - fine but if you are after performance I would consider 2x500GB in RAID (striped mode) You will not need any more than a 600watt PSU - again the OCZ range is fantastic and is around £55 saving you around £45 with which you can get a sound blaster X-fi extreme gamer which are amazing (have one myself ;)) Right, as for the OS - I would seriously just get the 32 bit Vista at the moment for compatibility reasons with programs - 64bit has been around for a long time now and no one other than ADOBE is looking at using its extra memory capability - in 32 bit Vista your system will still see 3.75GB of the RAM so you get the extra gains without compromising compatability with programs. Right that's me done - any questions?

Is your board clocking the CPU at 1197.1 MHz or are you overclocking it? If you are overclocking you need a better cooler to handle the heat
