  1. You should be able to just swap the components into a new case, but cases are different, and the way they house components are different - some cases have the PSU at the bottom and some at the top - you HAVE to make sure that the PSU cables can reach to where they need to and cases that have PSU at the bottom need to be much longer to avoid the graphics card and to reach the 4/8 pin ATX which is at the top of the board. I have seen many people nipping to their local pc shop to get an ATX extended wire. :o
  2. Ok right click on the desktop and select properties - on the screensaver tab there is an option at the bottom that says power saving then on power schemes there is one called 'turn off monitor' check its set to never
  3. The click then as you are referring to is probably just the PSU. In regards to the RAM and the amount of RAM you can run - 400Mhz is faster than 200Mhz - I would have a look in your motherboard manual and see what is the:- Maximum amount of RAM the motherboard can handle And the maximum speed it can handle (I would have thought 400Mhz is max) and then base your decisions on that. In regards to the Case and cooling - if there are no front intake fans - I would highly recommend upgrading the case to one that has some - do not worry about never have done it before I am in the middle of doing a Build your own PC article which will be from scratch ;)
  4. They will however affect the system start up time and it may be sluggish for 2-3 minutes after bootup. I agree in terms of it's not the amount of processes - it's whether you know what the processes are - there will be many in there that are running even though they do not need to be. If you are ever unsure what they are - run MSCONFIG and paste everyone into Google and then at least - you will know the source.
  5. Goku - I am truly sorry that you are caught up in this - and as Wolfey says can only be described as madness -
  6. 37 processes on mine aswell - have you looked in the MSCONFIG and seen whats lurking?
  7. You must be VERY careful with MB voltages - do not be tempted to up and up them until it loads faster as it can blow the Motherboard capacitors  Q6600 CPU's are extremely awkward - I had a very similar problem with my ABIT MOBO (search my posts) Have you set the RAM timings for 4GB as they are different than for 2GB as the timings are slightly looser. You may also be experiencing problems with the 4870 as they are BETA drivers. - I was going to get a 4870 lastweek until I saw the drop of the 260 GTX and I opted for that ;)
  8. Are you 100% sure that the monitor is not set to hibernate or turn off after 40 minutes:- Comtrol panel - power options - and then make sure that its all turned to off - or MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE
  9. I read about this the other day - ISP are meant to be making it 'easier' for people to download music in particular - ie not a million and one steps to buy the one song you want. People I have spoken to about this mention that this was tried a while ago by film companies to crack down on the illegal download of their movies. And as for getting a letter off your ISP - I have never heard of anyone getting a letter from theirs unless it was a bill :( The letters come directly from the film company - ie Warner Brothers - there were loads of 'incidents' about T3. Bottom line - I can't see them enforcing this.
  10. Ok - in regards to the ticking it can be 1 of 2 things:- Hard drive dying - or the fans just coming to a halt - Are you 100% sure that BOTH the sticks of RAM that you have are the same speed? This is very important because if they are not then both will be running at whatever the slower stick of RAM is.
  11. Hi Tom, Welcome to FPCH, Wolfey knows me too well :D
  12. Wolfey - Me and Kelly had a very long game of PM tennis - all sorted now - different here to the US :D
  13. The RAM does not have to match the CPU speed - The problem with putting a 1066Mhz CPU into a 1333Mhz MOBO - means you are not using the potential of the MOBO - 1333Mhz chips are just as cheap as 1066Mhz - don't go back in technology - I would however HIGHLY recommend you get a 1333Mhz MOBO that supports DDR2 as DDR3 is still very expensive. Also most 1066Mhz MOBO's support 1333Mhz CPU's with a BIOS update
  14. Kelly they are totally different - if you go into any major retailer they are split up - CABLE (NTL, VIRGIN) and ADSL (BT etc) you cannot use one for the other.
  15. Please bear with us - this matter is under review.
  16. Ok - may be with new contracts - I will ring em as mine is classed as a new contract
  17. there are three types of wireless B, G and Draft N Draft N is the highest signal strength - and if her router and computer use Draft N and you are using B or G it is possible that you would not see it at all as you would need draft N to see Draft N if you know what I mean - it would make sense too as hers would scan and find more than yours would
  18. I have MCE on my laptop but again - it's a recovery partition  I must admit I have found it one of the most stable version of XP and have never had to do an install:- I have just looked on the NET and some people have used XP pro to reinstall MCE, there are some lengthy procedures involved by the looks of it though.
  19. Right when the guy came to do mine at the new house he told me to get in touch with customer services as they DO give you a FREE router - give them a bell and they should send you one - failing that I will call em and get me one and send it you - I have a NETGEAR one that I prefer for the limiting of access tools via MAC addresses in the router.
  20. uninstall Office via add/remove and then go into C/program files and delete MANUALLY any MS OFFICE folders - then try and reinstall it MS ALWAYS leaves redundant folders in the Program files!
  21. You may need a firmware update - go to the manufactures website and see if there are any available
  22. how many connectors are on the back of the speakers? there should be 2 one green and one Orange/Red - is that the case?
  23. Wolfey - make sure you get the right type of router - some are CABLE (NTL/VIGIN) Specific and some are DSL (BT, o2) specific - I would call your provider first as some of them will give you a router FREE
  24. That still involves using a HUB -
