  1. Im glad you got it sorted, so after all it wasnt going to sleep the GPU was shutting down due to overheating :) For the future dont use vacuum cleaners as they generate static, use cans of compressed air :) Glad its ok though
  2. 95% of the time its bad RAM
  3. You need to completely format the drive, it seems that you have either:- Formatted the section of the drive that had the Vista OS backup on it. If you use the tools CD that you got from ebay it should have somekind of drive wipe utility on it from the manufacturer of the HDD (Hitachi, Seagate etc) use that and then when you start installing the OS where it asks where you want to put the OS make OS format the disk as one whole partition and install the OS to that (dont choose quick format choose full)
  4. SO it was wiped and then came with a fresh copy of Windows 2000 or did you install this? It sounds like the installation of either mozilla or IE didnt go so well. Was the computer fully uopdated from the Microsoft website with service packs and all the ctitical updates before you installed anything else?
  5. It all comes down to budget..... The maximum HD res is 1080i or p (you cant physically notice the difference)
  6. It depends what the ports are on are they on the MOBO or are they on an add in GPU card. If its the MOBO then I would use windows as Armageddon said, if its a GPU card then I would use the software within the driver from ATI or NVIDIA
  7. That applies to the Office product and not the Operating system of XP/Vista/W7 etc
  8. My family live in Amlwch :) You will have to enter the actual router webpage (there is a sticker on the bottom of the router with an IP address and a password normally something like:- home page - 192.168.1.1 password - password from here you can configure the router itself (set it to bridge mode if it isnt already being a modem/router it needs to be) you can also set any log on details that you need.
  9. Very weird one that  SO just to clarify, you have the latest drivers for GPU, chipset, BIOS etc. Also your GPU drivers should be sourced from Nvidia and not Packard Bell.. You are logged in as an Administrator and have looked in the power options and disabled everything that can cause the PC to go to sleep In on W7 here but:- Control panel> hardware and sound>power options>choose a power plan> set everything to NEVER then apply and exit.
  10. You can get the download direct from here:- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=B5F726F1-4ACE-455D-BAD7-ABC4DD2F147B&displaylang=en If this is where you were directed, it could be that your version of Windows did not pass the WGA. I'm not going to pry but as far as you know is the OS legit? If not then you cannot get this program from the MS website
  11. You have had a few responses on other forums too.......... I personally would say that the old HDD had an adapter on it and you need to use that on the new drive :)
  12. Did you uninstall and then install the GPU drivers again as Maynard suggested? It can often happen if the drivers have been corrupted, but its a quick and easy way to check without having to buy a new GPU Can you also let us know what Motherboard you have and a model number if it has one :)
  13. The square hole looks remarkebly like an Ethernet housing, can you check around the Ethernet port and see if there is a housing on it?
  14. Are you at a Uni or college (they have strict firewall access) if you have someone in the IT dept they will allow the download or send you a link you should be able to access it on. If you are home then you need to have a word with whoever configured the network as some ports are automatically blocked by the router. More info please :)
  15. After reading your post again, re the fans speeding up, this would indicate that the system is working hard at something, if you open task manager (CTRL ALT and DEL) then start task manager have a look at the CPU and RAM (when the fans go loud) and see if they are throttling, this means hitting 100% and causing a delay in the system. If it is then we need to identify what program is using the CPU and RAM :)
  16. Mcafee is often bundled with a PC (not a program I would recommend) and can be very obtrusive. (maybe something Intel will look into now they have 'procured' Mcafee) If you ran MB and it says that there is nothing on your system then I would trust that over a Mcafee scan. Have you looked in msconfig to check that messenger is listed under the start up programs? open a cmd (command) window and type msconfig and hit enter, it will bring up the msconfig window and on the top right there is a tab called startup there will be lots of boxes with and without ticks in them, expand the bar so that you can see what the program is (unticked ones appear at the bottom of the list) only untick any if you are 100% sure you dont need them at startup and this will also decrease the boot time into the OS :) If you need any further help with this then let us know
  17. Hi and welcome to FPCH :)
  18. It is good that you jumped in head first (best way in my opinion) people try and over simplyfy things otherwise :) I have a PC Build link in my sig of some piccies I did and some explanations attached to them that will help a complete notice in future :)
  19. Hi and welcome to FPCH :)
  20. Re hotmail - change your hotmail password and memorable question. The rest the malware team will assist you with
  21. So you should have:- Green (front) Blue/black (rear) Red/Orange (sub) Are these the way the phonos are configured?
  22. It could be either, try a different screen if you can. (if the board has onboard GPU also try this to confirm if it is the GPU) If not then the most common thing to cause lines on a screen is the GPU RAM overheating,
  23. Hi and welcome to FPCH :)
  24. Can you let us know what 'parts' of advice etc you used to gather your build or anything else we did to help as we may be able to merge some of it into a 'basic guide' :)
  25. It could be a number of things, the drive could have been partitioned to show as another physical drive (still using RAID technology) or could be 2 disks again 1 as the C:/ and 1 E:/ If you can see one then the only thing to get windows to recognise the other disk is a format using disk management, but you WILL lose the data on it. If you have access to another PC I would add the HDD and then try and access it on that and burn any files to DVD-+R or onto an external drive.
