  1. It sounds like the HDD is dying to me. As a precaution, I would urge you to back up all your data ASAP. And invest in another HDD - and install your OS to it.
  2. Battle for middle earth games are awesome !! Have you always used this drive or is it a new drive as you may need to update the firmware of the drive.
  3. What resolution are you trying to play the games at - Supreme commander is a far more taxing game than crysis, regardless what anyone says! You will be having an issue with the GPU temps from what you are saying, do you have sufficient cooling of the 2 cards, a fan is normally required between them unless you have a decent case with a side exhaust fan
  4. Have you tried popping the CMOS battery out? what did you last do before this happened ?? any help or further explanation will help
  5. Hi and welcome - please feel free to 'pick our brains'
  6. In your first post you mentioned that the PC was turned on and the fans kicked straight in at full revs. This normally indicates that the BIOS has been reset. If your PC has an onboard GPU - then you will need to disable this in the BIOS in order for the add in GPU to work.
  7. I will leave this with Polo as I do not really recommend media systems. You will be extremely limited on £300 though, media pcs are normally used just as a file server as opposed to actually using it to do artwork etc. artwork requires a GPU and your budget is too minimal to have anything other than onboard
  8. Some games are just awkward and EA have been slated for this plenty of times in the past, it can sometimes be the encryption they use on the disks. I noticed that you mentioned the optical drive was E:/ Do you have another disk or another optical utilising D:/? as this may help. also have you tried cleaning the disks
  9. I just wanted to thank Doug for posting this, this proves that a member may have the solution that you need - thanks Doug
  10. Is this a genuine disk? sounds like an uninstaller to me with something like a WINRAR file
  11. Ok when you explore the disk - there should be a setup exe in the root of the disk. Double click and see if it runs, if not right click and run as administrator. any problems with that let us know
  12. Right - so you put the cd in the drive and then go to my computer - where the drives and opticals are listed. do you hear the CD/DVD drive spin up? do other disks work ok in the drive ? Sorry if the questions sound basic, but I just wanted to check that its not something simple before we go registry hunting
  13. Hi and welcome to FPCH :)
  14. Hi and welcome to FPCH :)
  15. Right - there is a big problem when ISP's tell you the speed of the connection - if its a 2MB connection - thats what you would get if you were on the doorstep of the exchange - the further away you get the worse it gets im afraid. so unless the router is severely limiting your connection, which can be the case if not properly configured. run the line directly into the PC without the router and run the test again
  16. It sounds like something more than the update has caused this issue. When you say it wont go past the boot logo screen - do you mean the BIOS post screen or the windows splash screen before it stops?
  17. Hi and welcome to FPCH :)
  18. The games will be in the defualt location of C:\ program files\ then the name of the game maker eg EA have a look in there and then just launch the icon from there rather than the disk
  19. Who was the update from MS? or was it a software update like Adobe?
  20. I have just looked at it - I am guessing that you got a used one as opposed to a new one - laptop components are fiddly at best, you could always just double check that you hooked it all up correctly - something is amiss somewhere whether you knocked the RAM or something - its hard to diagnose - but you have either a hardware issue or a heat issue
  21. It's ok Barry - I do try and do my bit for help the aged :D:D By this I mean Barry and not you Beebs.
  22. If its frozen at the BIOS - the BIOS is the very core of your system - no OS is running and most of the time no hardware either - can you please state which fan you replaced and what it was connected to as most fans on laptops exhaust heat - did you fit it the right way round?
  23. When the PC boots up you normally keep pressing del (it varies on models) and when it comes up there is a black screen with about 8 options on it - there is normally a section for temps within one of the sub sections - do not change any settings - just write down and post your findings :)
  24. Just as a side note to this - it is not advised to disable items that you dont know what they do - be very careful with what you disable - if you expand the second pane of writing this normally gives a clearer indication of what program owns the startup entry
  25. Accessing an external HDD should not strain your system to the point of it shutting down - enter the BIOS and see what the onboard temp sensors report back - and we can tell you if they are higher than normal - Laptops always need to be in a ventilated position - some of the laptops have cooling fans underneath - so dont rest it on a cussion on your lap for exaample
