  1. We all started somewhere - except me - I was born a cyborg :)
  2. Right - you say there are loads of files - how many are there that start with numbers liek 8.10 etc - more than one and that may be the issue - Go to add/remove programs via the control panel and REMOVE all the old display drivers. RESTART When windows boots the screen resolution should be massive - when windows tries and find drivers just click cancel - go to the link I posted and download the driver to your desktop - when its downloaded run the file and let it complete - it will ask to restart the PC - let it do this - and all should be working now :)
  3. Right - first of all - you only need the GPU driver - forget the other bumph that ATI try and give you go here - is this what you have Drivers & Tools | GAME.AMD.COM you want the bottom download button DISPLAY DRIVER ONLY It says on the ATI website that this GPU requires 400Watt, I think this is being VERY safe on their part. if you go to C:\ program files and then ATI within the ATI folder there should be some files - can you list them all please. and we can go from there
  4. Hi, Welcome to FPCH :)
  5. I have posted in the other thread too - but this seems more of a heat issue to me. Pixels do not normally just appear and especially in the same sequence. do you have any direct air going to the card - have you checked the fan is running? is there even a fan? you may just need to upgrade the cooling to compensate for the heat - but the damage may have been done to the RAM and the GPU on the card.
  6. Hmm - heatsinks are a good idea - but you need to have a case with sufficient cooling for them to be of any benefit whatsoever. I wouldnt pay the extra for the 1GB version of the GPU as you will noy notice the difference unless there is not much difference in price. The PSU is a good one :D With RAM I always go for OCZ as I have not had one fail yet.
  7. As Tootech has stated its not worth the cost of getting yours repaired for the sake of a new one. I am very handy with a soldering iron and what people call extreme mods but even I would not try and resurrect a CPU with a pin broken off  If it was a £900 CPU then that's a different matter :D
  8. One of the best ways to check if a GPU is failing or the drivers are is to open a command window and type dxdiag and run the tests that are there. If there is indeed an issue with the card it will be here that it is noticed more.
  9. This is not something that you want to do unless you have to really - you type msconfig into the run command - and at the very end under the startup tab - is a list of everything that runs when windows loads - you untick any that you do not want to run. then save and reboot.
  10. The error is from the NVIDIA driver - did you uninstall the old driver and then reboot and then install the new one ??
  11. your keyboard and mouse and the audio card is waking the PC up - this should not happen unless you are using the mouse or the keyboard at the time its asleep - strange how the audio is listed - unless its playing sound at the time of going to sleep.
  12. They are powered through the USB and they will be on until the PC is turned off at the mains - :)
  13. Use the ASUS update facility that comes on the MOBO disk - it can update the BIOS from a windows environment and is much easier than the 'oldskool' method. Get the very latest update not just the one that mentions the RAM. DET DRAM is assocaited to the fact that there is 4GB of RAM - the BIOS update should fix it. If not then you need to run memtest - did you set the Overclock on the MOBO or does the MOBO do it for you? as you may need to up the Voltages and the timings. Do the BIOS update first and then we will see if it needs additional tweaking :) READ the instructions on the BIOS update -
  14. As the others have mentioned - a broken pin is the end of the line for your CPU - if you can find any documentation on the Motherboard then we can tell you what CPU's you can have in there - the good news is that you dont have to take the Motherboard out and mess around with that side of it. New CPU - some new thermal compound and away you go - your PC may even be faster as you may be able to get a faster CPU :) (behind every cloud is a silver lining)
  15. Hi and Welcome :) Right lets get started on this - It will take AM2 chips - NOT AM2+ chips PSU is preference really but the Corsair and OCZ ranges IMHO are the best in terms of reliability and cost. It can take 4GB - but seeing as though there are 4 DIMM slots you may need to buy 4x1GB DIMMS as opposed to 2x2GB DIMMS GPU wise - I would more at the ATI offerings - you can get the 4850 for along the same lines as the 9800GTX+ and the ATI will blow it out of the water :D If you need anything more, let us know :)
  16. Have you looked to see if there are any MOBO updates - it does sound like the MOBO is setting the RAM speed lower than it is capable of - are you comfortable looking in the BIOS and reporting the settings of the RAM?
  17. Hi, Welcome to FPCH :)
  18. There are lots of variations of Xeon processors - do you know what socket it uses?
  19. Go into control panel and remove the display adapter - You mentioned using a disk - ALWAYS get drivers for a GPU from the Nvidia site - there is a tool there where you put in your OS and the family of the GPU - 9 in your case and then download the driver - Restart your machine after removing the old one in add/remove. When it restarts - ignore all the windows update stuff and install the downloaded one you got from the Nvidia site
  20. Its not ideal though as the timing is way out.
  21. This has been an issue a few times - I dont think there was a resolution to the double posting. It didnt used to be an issue a while ago as there were times that mods and admins were not on for hours, now 99% of the time there is an admin or a mod on. It would be worth revisiting as we are getting busier and busier and more and more people posting and it will happen more frequently
  22. Ok thats right - the top one that is. Have you done this http://common.packardbell.com/itemnr/instr_sli_setup/instr_sli_drvsetup.jpg
  23. From what you are saying you seem to be having a few issues in regards to the fans not working etc - Most fans use a crossthrough cable basically you plug a Molex in BUT you have to make sure that the power runs to something like an HDD or an optical drive - it is not recommended to use the crossthrough cables to the HDD as they can reduce the power from the PSU. Take a pic of the inside of the case and we can tell you what needs to go where, you can also have a look on my page and there is a PC build guide - you may want to have a look at it to get an idea of what I mean. I dont think that all the components are getting the power required and its normally the ATX lead that people miss out.
