I've tried the forums. I've tried to get someone to call me. Windows 10. I installed a new mouse and can't figure out how to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is installed into the usb port. It's driving me crazy. I'm about to smash a wall. More...

Note: I tried posting this on MS support site 3 times (2 different browsers) and it hangs and won't post. So I hope it works here... Until yesterday, when I had to move the Windows Xbox Wireless receiver for Windows unit to another USB port, it worked for 2 years, no problem. Now, no matter how many fixes I try, it will not connect the wireless controller. Here's what I tried (many times) Switched ports Changed controller batteries (12 different, brand new batteries) Different controller(s) Removed, all not essential USB devices, etc, keyboard and mouse Uninstalled and reinstalled the latest driver (from the CD and 4 different locations [all the same installer]) Moved the receiver within inches of the controller Tried to use the connect button on the bottom of the receiver different ways (hit it once, hold it for up to 30 seconds, hold it once, then release it, then hold it again (that makes the controller green circle blink faster for about 10 seconds). Hold the connect button on the controller until the circle lights rotate from 1,2,3,4 (over and over in all of the above steps). Made sure I had all the latest windows updates And the "one" fix that worked for everyone I read, that didn't for me because the controller never shows under device manager, or add device to your computer, it showed as "Unidentified Device" for all of them, and I never get any unknown device. Here are their steps "Right click on Computer Go to Properties Click on Device Manager Right click on the Unidentified Device (This doesn't show up for me) Go to Properties Go to the Drive tab Click on Update Driver… Browse my computer for driver software Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer Microsoft Common Controller for Window Class Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009] Update Driver Warning Click Yes" I am at a loss. I cannot believe it suddenly died when moving it from one port to another, especially when it makes the green controller circle flash faster after holding the connect button on the bottom of the wireless controller. We have a few users experiencing graphical issues. Sometimes they have a white bar on top of their Windows Explorer and their browser apps. A temporary fix for the browser apps is pressing f11 twice. But is there a permanent fix? We are connected to a local domain. (No Azure or something) I am one of the IT guys here. Till now 4 of the 100 have that problem. They are running build 10.0.15063.1266. Al drivers are up to date. And it only happen on web browsers and sometimes the file explorer. More...

Explorer.exe launches in wrong HighDPI mode for multimonitor use - blurry text on secondary screen Hi, using Windows Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134 i have the following problem: the Windows Explorer (c:\windows\explorer.exe) should usually be PerMonitor DPI aware. However it is launched as only SystemAware, which results in blurry text when the window is moved from my HighDPI monitor (125% scaling) to the secondary monitor with only 100% scaling. The strange thing is, that another explorer.exe process is launched in correct mode. However all self-launched windows are launched wrong. PID Awareness Process name --- --------- ------------ 12364 !PerMonitor chrome.exe Windows 7 moves/resizes window... 15092 !PerMonitor ECtiClient.exe

Good afternoon, Dears! My experience of using Windows 10 started from confusion: Almost every popup in system and in Internet Explorer is shown BEHIND current window, doesn't matter browser or Windows Explorer. I've tried searching.. but maybe because I don't really know what to search for - I can't find how to fix it... I want any popup, including security popups (login/password promt) to be shown over all windows. Maybe there is a GPO for that reason? https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1324443Thanks in advance, Roman More...

Windows 10 RDP teal screen, spinning wheel icon, 15 seconds to open programs that open instantly on the local machine Something happened to Windows 10 RDP and Windows Server 2012 RDP in recent releases of Windows. The problem is that RDP is really, really slow... For example, if you open a program like regedit in RDP it takes 15 seconds to open. Meanwhile the screen is teal with a spinning hour glass. On the local machine however, there is no appreciable delay. I have 5 brand new 6 core windows 10 pro machines. They are rack mounted. The machinist in our machine shop access them using RDP... The machines are soooo slow over RDP its not even funny. They used tom work flawlessly sometime earlier this year when MS pushed an update. We are working on private LAN, with GigE connection, with the rack PC's on the same switch as the Remote Desktop clients... What did MS do?... How can this be fixed? I am experiencing the same problem administering a Server 2012 machine that was recently updated... Something changed that has made what was a good working environment into one that is almost unusable... I mean, if I wanted lack luster performance like this, I'd have pulled the old IBM XT out of retirement Any help would be greatly appreciated. More...

I am using Windows 10 Home edition. The top part of my browser gets cut off. I essentially lose everything above the address bar. It used to only happen with Edge, but has now happened in Chrome as well. The portion that gets cut off sometimes is a gray bar, sometimes a black bar, and sometimes that portion of the desktop. I inserted a print screen where the top part of the browser was replaced with a black bar. When I reboot, the browsers usually work fine. But I would like to resolve the problem without having to reboot. Any assistance would be appreciated. More...

File explorer suddenly switching folders with Typscript files *.ts to Large Icon view from Details view Hello, File explorer just started switching folders with Typscript files *.ts to Large Icon view from Details view. Also, file dates filling in very slowly. Will reboot to see if that fixes it, but very weird! When I check the ts file type is was Movies & TV, so I changed it back to open with VS Code (not sure how long it has been associated with Movies & TV). If there are any thoughts or you've run into the same thing please let me know. Thanks! Ross More...

Issue: Clicking on start menu after windows login "sometimes" shows blank icons in the Start menu. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1321835 Affects: Have noticed this issue on clean installs of Windows 10 v1803 Professional and Enterprise ISO installs from the MS VLC. Also seen this affect on Windows devices that "never" had the issue on old versions of Windows 10 (1511,1607,1703,1709) that "successfully upgraded to 1803" and now has this random issue. Workaround: End Task from taskmgr "ShellExperienceHost.exe". Then re-click on the Start Menu and your icons should look better. or Click on the Action Center - Click Tablet Mode - and you can see the icons be re-drawn. Click on Tablet Mode again to come out of it. Icons should now be fine for this windows session only. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1321832 How to replicate the issue: Click on start as soon as you login to Windows where processing time is high. And you can see the icons sometimes trying to be drawn. Other times when you repeat this test there will be no issue. This happens as well on clean OS install with no other apps installed. But like I say it doesn't always happen. Loading more apps to the PC like an antivirus or some Enterprise software, or connecting/signing into OneDrive, causes more CPU Time at windows login and the issue is more easier to replicate. Also you might find sometimes its only one or two icons that have the blank look. And other times it can be completely different icons. There seems to be no rule or logic what causes them to not show the correct Icon thumbnail. The only thing I see is that it happens when CPU time is High or something is loading at the same time as you are clicking start. It feels like the Start menu at this moment is fighting to load... it draws some of the icons.. then times out/gives up and leaves the other icons with the "blank look". My Question to the community.... Has any one in an Enterprise Environment experienced this issue too? We are seeing it a lot at my company (20,000 users). And I also see it happen on some of my home computers too which is Store bought and using Windows 10 1803 Professional. I have never come across this in the previous version of Windows 10. Kind regards Allan More...

Hi All, Strange one, I have a user at a site that does not use a domain (files shared over a workgroup) When ever the user restarts the PC, or locks the screen, when they go to log back in they get the message this account is locked. This is before they have even tried to log in so it is not the user entering the password wrong. I have reset the password, checked the PC for shares there are none, I have checked in task Scheduler there are no unexpected tasks. I have checked the services, they are mostly logged under the system account and the few that are running under the user account I have re-entered the password for, to no avail. As usual any help truly appreciated More...

I need help. When I am logging into my work PC via Remote Desktop Connection, the font is so blurry, its nearly impossible to read let alone actually work. I have found other forums discussing this issue, but none of the suggested solutions actually work for me. These are the ones I have seen.. 1. Updating options in the Remote Desktop application to uncheck "font smoothing" and "desktop composition". I do not have these options as my connection is set to automatically detect, which I also see is a suggested solution to the issue. 2. Changing display resolution. Mine is set to full screen. If I reduce the size, it opens my remote up in a small window that doesn't expand to the full size of my display and also does not solve the blurring issue. Also have tried using 16bit, 15bit, etc with no change. 3. Last solution I saw was to go into Intel Graphics Settings (by right clicking on the desktop) > 3D > and selecting "Turn Off" under Conservative Morphological Anti-Aliasing. This seems to have been the #1 solution for a lot of people, but this is how mine is already set. So clearly this didn't help me. Any other ideas? I am running Windows 10. More...

With regards to the newest onedrive client (onedrive.exe) supporting Files on Demand, are their any plans to make this usable for all users of a computer rather than having a per-user install? It's so near to usable in most educational establishments yet so far: as it stands if all users stick to the same computer it would be very useful, however when there are thousands of users moving computers constantly, it's not possible. Well, not feasible for users to sit and wait for onedrive to finish installing because their profiles are cleared out every day (to cease the profile issues which are still commonplace). We'd much prefer to use mandatory profiles for this very reason but it seems MS don't want that hassle any more. Local isn't a problem for us, however the onedrive thing is :( Any plans to fix this? Since moving to Windows 10 Shadow copies no longer on the local machine. In Windows 7 I was able to use shadow copy to view previous version of files and folders but not previous version does not populate anything. This is a clean install of Windows 10 in an enterprise environment. Windows 10 1709 & 1803 Protection is enabled on the C: drive but that does nothing. I setup a scheduled task to run this command: wmic shadowcopy call create Volume='C:\' It will create shadow copies but it does cause some performance issues like occasionally freezes the pc when the task runs File history does not work for this case as it requires an additional storage location and does not work the same using previous versions tab. has shadow copy been deprecated in or to push file history? can shadow copy still be used without performance impact? how would I enable it if system protection does not enable it in our environment? Windows 10 ignores WSUS GPO - No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations Hi Guys! I'm starting to get angry because of the Windows 10 update behavior, let me explain it. We have a WSUS server, with a couple hundred of Windows 10 clients, a few computer groups, no auto approve for the updates, specific group policy settings to avoid auto restart for logged on users, and still everything is went to sh*t on this week. New cumulative update (KB4093112), new update for windows 10 (KB4099989), i tested these updates and i approved it to install, and some of the clients decided to restart during the night, but I set the following via group policy ages ago: No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations Enabled Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations Enabled Wait the following period before prompting again with a scheduled restart (minutes): 1440 Configure Automatic Updates Enabled Configure automatic updating: 4 - Auto download and schedule the install The following settings are only required and applicable if 4 is selected. Install during automatic maintenance Disabled Scheduled install day: 0 - Every day Scheduled install time: 03:00 What the heck just happened? There was a logged on user on the machines and these settings just worked fine until this week. This is the log entry from one of the computers: The process c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe (computername) has initiated the restart of computer computername on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Service pack (Planned) This is the official Microsoft documentation to disable auto restart for logged on users and now it’s not working or what? How can I permanently disable the "New" notification from appearing under any apps that I install on a Windows 10 workstation? I did some research on this and discovered a Group Policy setting called "Do not show the 'new application installed' notification" in the Computer Configuration section of the Group Policy editor. I enabled this setting and restarted the system, but, when I installed a new app, the "New" still appeared (see the attached screenshot below). I would like to know how to turn this feature off for good. In Windows 7, a similar setting called "Highlight newly installed programs" actually worked when I unchecked the option. Why is this gpedit. class="gr_ gr_23 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="23" id="23">msc setting not working on Windows 10? How do you troubleshoot Windows upgrade failure with error code: 80080005 > 0xC1900108 0x90017 The only antivirus is Windows defender. Malwarebytes was removed. The Widows update troubleshooter had been ran. The software distribution folder contents had been deleted. The upgrade failure occurred in clean boot. There is corruption of the operating system that cannot be fixed by scannow, restorehealth, or in place upgrade repair. The drive files need to be saved and a backup image could not be performed by third party software after it found Volume Shadow Copy Service errors (VSS) and was unable to fix them. The VSS troubleshooter was ran and reregistered the service but this and other steps did no fix the problems detected. A clean install is not an option until there are secure backups of the folders and files. A reset with save files was performed and failed. Troubleshooting the failed upgrade is preferred. The operating system is Windows 1703. The Windows 10 iso used to install the operating system was used for the in place upgrade repair and failed. A downloaded Windows 1803 iso to the desktop and then ran displayed: Modern Setup Host Modern Setup Host has stopper working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. When searching the setupact log what would you search for based on this error code? When searching the setuperr log what would you search for based on this error code? When searching the log created after reset save files what would you search for and what can potentially be fixed?
