Hi, I have a windows 10 pro laptop with remote desktop setup (allow remote connections to this computer). I remote into the laptop from a PC. I just noticed that when the laptop display is turned off (set to turn off after 10mins), there is delay in keystrokes and mouse movements when the laptop is accessed remotely. When I wake up the laptop screen by pressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse, the delay is gone when accessing the laptop remotely until the laptop screen goes off again in 10mins. I have the latest windows 10 version (1607, Build 14393.693). How do we fix this issue? The current workaround is to set the 'turn off the display' to 'never'. Thanks More...

I am investigating multiple Event Log entries after a fresh install and update. These errors are all in the Administrative section and are classed as Errors. Not Critical Errors, Warnings or Information. None of the errors are show stoppers, some may even be benign for all I know. I just get annoyed when I'm conducting faultfinding (British Term) procedures and I click on a link to get further information about a fault, Microsoft sends me to a page asking me to check out their latest Xbox. I don't even have or use an Xbox. The link used to either provide me with more information about the Event Log entry or else tell me that no information could be found - both of which are far more useful than "Buy an Xbox advert. I get this problem with Edge and Explorer with the default search engine set to Bing or Google. The initially link pasted in the browser looks OK but then changes to the address of Microsoft's official homepage. More...

I'm starting to hear complaints that the new Windows 10 photo viewer is slow to open. I can replicate the issue on my PC. I uninstalled the viewer and reinstalled it from the Windows store but that did not resolve the issue. I'm seeing a lot of complaints about this on Internet. I'm running the latest version of Windows 10 Creator Edition: Windows 10 Pro Version 1703 OS Build 15063.138 Does anyone have a fix for this. I'd prefer a fix instead of a workaround. More...

I have 10 different email addresses, representing my various business identities, all within my Windows Live Mail system. Since the most recent Windows 10 update, all of my emails show as being sent from my name, rather than whichever email name I choose in the 'from' section when composing the email. This is causing great confusion with my customers. How can I get it back to what it used to show? More...

Windows update for 1709 refuses to install saying Symantec Endpoint Protection is installed - but it's not installed I think this might be a fairly common problem, because I've seen it all over Google, but I have not found the right solution yet. Microsoft wanted to push Windows update 1709 to my computer, but it keeps failing saying Symantec Endpoint Protection has to be removed first. I removed SEP the first time I got that message, but it keeps coming back with the same error. I downloaded a program from the Symantec website called "clean wipe" which is supposed to remove every trace of SEP from the system, including files, folders, registry settings, everything - no dice. I manually searched the registry for the string "symantec" and manually removed everything I could find. No dice - Windows update is still insisting I need to remove SEP from the system before the update can install. Some people said if the update finds even the installation package of SEP anywhere, the update will fail, so I searched the entire C: drive for the string "symantec", and found some install programs I'd accumulated over the years and was just storing in a folder somewhere and deleted them. Still no dice. This first happened about November or December last year. I've run the "fix" program numerous times, and had to re-download the Update several time. This is getting annoying. I would try for awhile, get busy with other things, come back again, a few times over. I would like to fix this once and for all. What do I need to do? Paul More...

OK before any jumps on me for this issue let me explain the full scenario as I know there are other postings about greyed out apps but I believe my scenario is different. For our computers we do not allow users access to the internet. We have had windows 10 for about 1 year. recently we have been getting a lot of calls that calculator and sticky notes are no longer working. When I investigated I found that shortcuts were greyed out and when you click on them it gave an error to go to windows store. If I were to login with internet access the app works just fine until I log off and they log back in. I am trying to figure out why it took nearly 10 months for this issue to start to show up for us. Was there a windows update that changed these settings? Does anyone know how to fix this with granting user internet access to the store. All the post I have seen deal with this issue but with people that have internet access and it is not working. More...

My original hard disk drive partition is missing, and I don't know how to access it or get it back. I stupidly and unknowingly tried to use the "Create a new pool and storage space" function on just my single hard drive. When I initially used my hard drive, I only had the single space, no partitions. I then tried to use this "new pool" function that is under Settings > System > Storage > Manage Storage Spaces, thinking that it would do something else. Being that I only had one disk in the pool, it said "Failed to create a pool". Fine, I thought. Then I noticed that my hard drive was not listed under This PC in the File Explorer, and I have no idea how to find it (I had originally called it ':Z'). I can't assign any saved files to that partition, either. Under the Disk Management window, the 931 unused GB of the original 1 TB hard drive are listed under Disk 1 as "Unallocated". The Disk is online. But the original ':Z' space is nowhere to be found. That partition does not appear in the upper part of the window, where you would see the columns: "Volume, Layout, Type, File System", etc. I have made a new ':Y' partition of 500 GB temporarily for use, though I still need access to the old files in the missing ':Z' volume. Any help would be monumentally appreciated, though I understand that the issue is not too clear. I don't even really know what I did. The pool function returning an error should, in my mind, have left the original storage space unchanged. Thank you. Update: It seems that the files are entirely gone. They cannot be found anywhere. Hopefully someone else reads this and avoids my mistake and negligence. Also, I mentioned something about a "missing 70 GB". That's not the case, nothing is missing. The hard drive only comes with 930 GB anyway. I knew that it wasn't a full 1,000 GB, but I assumed that 7% wasn't missing. Anyway, I hope this helps anyone with a similar issue or concern. More...

Hello everyone, I had linked an Onedrive account on my PC using an organization account (University student account), which after I left was deleted. Now this Onedrive folder stays on my PC and shows on navigation panel in explorer. I cannot delete it because it is a "cloud folder", and I tried to unlink it but impossible because the account does not exist and cannot be logged in with. I really want to delete this Onedrive and its data as it is more than 5G on my disk. Anyone can help? P.S. I am using windows 10. Best More...

We are trying to utilize the remote assistance tool in our domain. We have configured the correct group policies and the necessary firewall rules. I find that others in my network can connect fine to my workstation through remote assistance, but the connection tends to last less than 10 minutes before randomly disconnecting. The only thing I found in event viewer that might be related is a security audit failure. The event ID is 5058. Details: Key file operation. Subject: Security ID: mydomain\my user account Account Name: my user account Account Domain: mydomain Logon ID: 0x12B351 Cryptographic Parameters: Provider Name: Microsoft Software Key Storage Provider Algorithm Name: RSA Key Name: DesktopSharing-{} Key Type: User key. Key File Operation Information: File Path: C:\Users\my user account\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\Keys\ Operation: Delete key file. Return Code: 0x80090016 This event seems to fire right when someone connects to me via Remote Assistance. I don't if this is describing where the problem is, but it seems unlikely to be a complete coincidence. I checked my folder for the file listed in File Path. It does not exist. More...

System: Windows 10 Professional Problem: We have discovered that some computers on our network have folders of user data that have become encrypted. I am unable to decrypt these folders to gain access to the data. I believe that some (but definitely not all) of these encryptions are the result of moving a MACOSX compressed folder to windows. Steps of failure: 1: See encrypted folder (Green). 2: Right click into properties. Select advanced. 3: 'Encrypt contents to secure data' is checkmarked, if I look at the 'Details' page, no users are under the 'Users who can access this file' group. 4: I uncheck the box and hit 'Ok', then 'Apply', then 'Apply changes to folder and subfolders'. 5: Error: An error occurred applying attributes to the file: "FILEPATH" This machine is disabled for file encryption. Steps that I have tried: -Removing the drive and attempting to decrypt from another computer. -Attempting to access through a linux boot -I had the user that 'owned' the file try to access it (I'm a network admin). She was unsuccessful. She downloaded the data a few months ago and her OS has NOT been modified since then. -Bitlocker is not enables -The disable EFI registry entry is appropriately set I'm out of ideas, there's no way we can archive the data as no one has the ability to view or copy the data short of duplicating drives. The only thing we can do is see filenames and delete the files. Any help would be much appreciated! More...

A USB stick has a GPT partition table and several partitions. The first partition is a FAT32 Microsoft basic data partition, which has always worked fine and still works fine. Windows used to see only the first partition, which was great. Something changed. Now when the USB stick is inserted, Windows asks if the user wants to format all their Linux partitions. Of course it's easy to know that the answer is no, but it's also easy to make mistakes which lose all the data, and it's also easy for users to complain that they have to answer a bunch of popups. Also it's easy for the Computer Management utility (mmc.exe) to confuse itself and stop responding. Each partition in a GPT table has a partition type and some attribute bits. Windows should see partition type 0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4 and avoid asking if the user wants to format it. Windows should see the attribute bit for "hidden" and avoid asking if the user wants to format it. Windows should see the attribute bit for "don't automatically assign a drive letter" and avoid asking if the user wants to format it. But no, this is Windows. Windows assigns drive letters to all the "hidden" "don't automatically assign a drive letter" Linux partitions, and Windows asks the user for each partition if the user wants to format it. Is there anything that can be set in the partition attributes to make Windows shut up and just ignore the partitions that it's supposed to ignore? To clarify, I want to set these partitions (except the first one) so that every Windows system on the planet will stop asking the unwanted questions. If I make some setting in the registry of my Windows PC, that might fix my PC but it won't stop other users from getting the unwanted questions from their Windows PCs. More...

Okay, we are now getting Windows 8 PCs and laptops. We are trying to do what should be simple: create a shortcut to an Access Database and have that shortcut pinned to the tak bar and be on the Start Screen. This does not work. 1) If we try to just right-click and select the "Pin to Takbar" option, it is not there. 2) If we open the database and right-click the access icon on the task bar, it will pin... HOWEVER... when the user actually tries to open the database with the now pinned icon, an error displays saying that the database cannot be found. 3) If we create a shortcut, there is no option to pin that either. So, how do we do this very rudimentary task: have an icon that will directly open a particular database both for (1) the task bar, and (2) the Windows 8 Start Menu? Okay, wait... we just discovered we can place the shortcut in C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ Why is this not available on the context menu? This is a major bug IMO. More...

I use the Win-key PrtScr-key. It would take a snap shot of my desktop and automatically save it into a folder called //C:USERS\DOUGLAS\PICTURES\SCREENSHOTS. This folder is located in C\Pictures. I used this combination forever, but it just stopped working. Even just hitting PrtScr alone no longer works. BUT hitting the Win-key and PrtScr-key will copy it to the clipboard, but understand the I want to make a *.png file in my Screenshots Folder. Just to make sure I'm clear: Whenever I hit Win-key PrtScr-key it would make a snap shot of my desktop and automatically save it in a folder called //Screenshots. This feature no longer works and I use it daily. Can anyone please help? Please let me know if you require additional info. Thank you More...

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb is the main search index file. After a fresh reindex of around 750,000 entries it is less than 1GB. Over the next few days it grows to 2GB, 4GB, 5GB, now 8GB. When I first noticed the problem it was 48GB and still growing! Each time it grows, it cripples the computer for some minutes with 100% saturated disk activity. System is a new i7, new Windows 8, lots of memory, disk, SSD etc. This was supposed to be fixed in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b9d897be-7cee-48bf-b06f-27bca627d3ee/bug-windowsedb-exploding Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: May 2013 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2836988/en-us This update package also fixes the issues that are documented in the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 2838018 The Windows.ebd file grows very large in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 I have that update and I still have the problem.
