  2. So I opened my computer today. It booted normally, but when I logged in on my only account, there is an error message saying: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive in this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location. I looked for my "Desktop" folder using the search bar, but the search bar isn't working. Please help me :( Thanks. My Windows version is Windows 7. More...
  3. c windows system32 config systemprofile desktop refers to a location that is unavailable windows 7 Hello all, I have that error message and the desktop doesn't load fine, no icons, no background etc, I read some fix about going into the C:/users and delete a blank desktop there (if you see 2 desktops) but I only see one (full of icons and stuff), this issue doesn't happen that often but obviously is annoying when it does, if someone have any idea, I would appreciate that. tech information(if needed): laptop Toshiba Satellite p755 Core i7 second edition 8 gigabytes of RAM windows 7 home premium Thanks More...
  4. I am in a networked environment supporting several hundred users running Windows 7 Enterprise. I have recently been presented with an issue that appears to be a classic Catch-22 situation. There is a folder that is nested extremely deep in the network file system. This folder contains PDF files, many of which have extremely long names. Apparently Adobe doesn't care that the name you give a file is too long for Windows to handle, and does it anyway. So, these files now cannot be opened, copied, moved, or renamed. Attempting to copy or move them to a location with a short path fails, with the error "the file name is too long..." Trying to rename the files themselves (using a slow double click, or by pressing F2) fails, with an error bell sound and no dialog box. Attempting to open the file in Adobe Reader or Pro yields the error "File name too long". At this point we may need to think about a 3rd party option if there is nobody here who can offer another suggestion. Again, I wish to reiterate that these files cannot be moved, copied or renamed as the names are so long that this is not being allowed by the file system. Any help you can offer (that doesn't involve suggestions that simply repeat what I have already said can't be done), would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Tim David More...

  9. The PC installed the update, went to reboot. Upon reboot, system was stuck on "Please wait". After waiting a significant time, powered the PC on into safe mode. After safe mode booted correctly, restarted normally. PC booted up fine. At the assigned time the system tried to install rollup update KB4457144 and failed with the error code 0x80073701. I have tried other fixes such sfc /scannow and the error keeps occuring. I am at a loss. More...
  10. I'm having a problem with a number of my Windows 7 x64 machines starting with the July Rollup (KB4338818) and still happening with August (KB4343900). The update installs without any errors, but still shows as needed. I've tried all the basics: resetting the WU client, scf /scannow, installing from local WSUS, installing online from Microsoft and installing from the offline installer downloaded from the update catalog. Nothing works. I don't see anything in the cbs log and all I see in Event Viewer is that it installed successfully. All other updates install just fine. More...
  11. Hi, I wanted to go into safe mode on windows 7 but it kept stopping at classpnp.sys . After reading a few threads I read about using Msconfig and checking the safe mode option under "Boot". It still keeps staying at classpnp.sys and when I hit F8 and hit "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" it seems to be able to get trough and it says it's actually loading up safe mode but then it changes to a black screen and does not change from that screen. I would appreciate and information you guys have that could solve this problem. If any of you know a command I could type in cmd to bring up the msconfig while in repair mode I could fix it because all I need to do is untick "Safe mode on startup" More...

  14. Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied. Hi all, I got me an Acer Iconica w3..... New little 8 inch tablet. Setup like any other machine. Connected to my Windows home server or Windows Server 2012 essentials. Tried to run a backup using the server connector. Backup failed with the subject VSS error in the application logs. I also tried the built in backup Windows 8 backup under control panel labeled Windows 7 File history system image. No dice with either. Investigating the error, I found some tests to confirm permission - all passed. Trusting the error message to be accurate (permissions problem) I see direction to make sure the VSS service is started (I started and changed to automatic) and to grant explicit access in the registry. I also see suggestions to grant the Network Service explicit rights to the computer using dcomcnfg. No dice. I've flattened and re-loaded. Actually on a second machine with a newer image from Acer (first machine had a bad microSD socket that would not eject). 2nd machine exhibits the same symptoms - failing to backup Compared settings to another Windows 8 machine - VSS service by default is manual and no explicit permission grants were in place. e.g. changes above were unnecessary but made just the same as part of trouble-shooting Clearly there is something more fundamental that I'm missing? All other machines are running Windows 8 Pro or Enterprise. This machine is running Windows 8 basic hence the built in backup can't image to a network but should be able to image to an external drive and/or the server connector should still be able to backup - correct??? Suggestions as to next steps? More...

  17. Okay, we are now getting Windows 8 PCs and laptops. We are trying to do what should be simple: create a shortcut to an Access Database and have that shortcut pinned to the tak bar and be on the Start Screen. This does not work. 1) If we try to just right-click and select the "Pin to Takbar" option, it is not there. 2) If we open the database and right-click the access icon on the task bar, it will pin... HOWEVER... when the user actually tries to open the database with the now pinned icon, an error displays saying that the database cannot be found. 3) If we create a shortcut, there is no option to pin that either. So, how do we do this very rudimentary task: have an icon that will directly open a particular database both for (1) the task bar, and (2) the Windows 8 Start Menu? Okay, wait... we just discovered we can place the shortcut in C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ Why is this not available on the context menu? This is a major bug IMO. More...
  18. I use the Win-key PrtScr-key. It would take a snap shot of my desktop and automatically save it into a folder called //C:USERS\DOUGLAS\PICTURES\SCREENSHOTS. This folder is located in C\Pictures. I used this combination forever, but it just stopped working. Even just hitting PrtScr alone no longer works. BUT hitting the Win-key and PrtScr-key will copy it to the clipboard, but understand the I want to make a *.png file in my Screenshots Folder. Just to make sure I'm clear: Whenever I hit Win-key PrtScr-key it would make a snap shot of my desktop and automatically save it in a folder called //Screenshots. This feature no longer works and I use it daily. Can anyone please help? Please let me know if you require additional info. Thank you More...
  19. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb is the main search index file. After a fresh reindex of around 750,000 entries it is less than 1GB. Over the next few days it grows to 2GB, 4GB, 5GB, now 8GB. When I first noticed the problem it was 48GB and still growing! Each time it grows, it cripples the computer for some minutes with 100% saturated disk activity. System is a new i7, new Windows 8, lots of memory, disk, SSD etc. This was supposed to be fixed in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b9d897be-7cee-48bf-b06f-27bca627d3ee/bug-windowsedb-exploding Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: May 2013 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2836988/en-us This update package also fixes the issues that are documented in the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 2838018 The Windows.ebd file grows very large in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 I have that update and I still have the problem. This looks like a Windows bug, gents. Any suggestions? More...
  20. Ok, I'm probably not the first person to ask about this. Why on earth, can I not see any of my connected network printers under 'Devices and Printers' of Windows 8? The devices are without question, 100% connected and registered with the OS, as evidenced from their presence within the 'Print Queues' section of Device Manager, and various software packages, when accessing the 'Print' dialog. I can't even find any evidence of the printers within Print Management! What is going on? More...

  23. Just reimaged to Windows 8.1 the other day and now I can't see any of my mapped network drives when I go to File/Open from some programs. When I go to Open I only see my local drives but no network drives. This is not happening in all programs but is happening in some. Most recently I'm trying to use the Windows 7 USB creation tool thing and can only see my local drive but it's happened in a few other programs as well. Anyone know what might cause this? I can browse to the drives just fine and some programs can list them normally. Very strange. More...
