C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb is the main search index file. After a fresh reindex of around 750,000 entries it is less than 1GB. Over the next few days it grows to 2GB, 4GB, 5GB, now 8GB. When I first noticed the problem it was 48GB and still growing! Each time it grows, it cripples the computer for some minutes with 100% saturated disk activity. System is a new i7, new Windows 8, lots of memory, disk, SSD etc. This was supposed to be fixed in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b9d897be-7cee-48bf-b06f-27bca627d3ee/bug-windowsedb-exploding Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 update rollup: May 2013 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2836988/en-us This update package also fixes the issues that are documented in the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 2838018 The Windows.ebd file grows very large in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 I have that update and I still have the problem. This looks like a Windows bug, gents. Any suggestions? More...

Hi, I have a situation where a standard domain user who is not supposed to have admin rights has admin rights in a local PC. I have checked the account permissions and it does not have admin rights. I have also checked the Tools>Computer Management ? Groups > Administrators and confirmed that it does not have the user added to this group. This computer officially has 2 admin accounts, one is the domain admin and one local admin. I am cracking my head trying to figure out how this user got admin privileges even though locally and in the AD this user does not have the rights assigned to them. I have removed the user profile in this computer and have created a new profile but that did not seem to help. Please advise if I have missed something here. Thank you. More...

Dear All, I came across an unusual situation and count on your help since I cannot resolve it. Scenario: Domain network with W2012R2 server as a DC, a spare DC and several other servers both virtual and physical. Several dozen workstations. One of the workstations (W7pro-64) got a failure with cyclic BSOD. Disks C:,D: and SYSTEM_DRV were restored from the 24-hour-old backup. "Preserve domain trust token on target drive" option is checked, though I do not know if it's correct. Anyway I see no way change this. After that the trust relationship was with the domain was broken with the following symptoms: 1. Login not possible with network cable plugged. The system refused to recognize any domain users. 2. RDP connections to the workstation fail. 3. Impossible to connect to MS Exchange. Additional information: Domain Member PolicySettingWinning GPODomain member: Maximum machine account password age 999 days Default Domain Policy What I tried: 1. Nltest query C:\>nltest /query Flags: 0 Connection Status = 1786 0x6fa ERROR_NO_TRUST_LSA_SECRET The command completed successfully 2. Nltest reset C:\>nltest /sc_reset: I_NetLogonControl failed: Status = 1786 0x6fa ERROR_NO_TRUST_LSA_SECRET 3. Netdom reset Also no luck - access denied. 4. Netsh netsh winsock reset netsh int ip reset and attempt to join the domain with the wizard. No luck. 5. Multiple attempts to unjoin the domain. Every possible combination. Under domain users with administrative rights, under enabled local admin account. With network cable plugged and unplugged. The result is the same - ACCESS DENIED. 6. wmic start /B /W wmic.exe /interactiveSmiley Surprisedff ComputerSystem Where "Name='%computername%'" Call UnJoinDomainOrWorkgroup FUnjoinOptions=0 No result at all. 7. POwershell cmdlet Reset-ComputerMachinePassword Reset-ComputerMachinePassword -Server "DC01" -Credential Domain01\Admin01 Also leads to access denied error All the methods I tried have one symptom in common - access is denied. I think that there is some fundamental problem in recovery. Please, advise how to resolve the problem. More...

O/S Win7 C: INT 80gb System Drive D: INT 500gb Back-Up J: EXT HDD 750gb WD Black In brief: My O/S 80gb HDD C: has failed. I've sent off for a new 1 TB HDD to apply a system image from an internal HDD back up image. (I'll also want to partition it...Best size for an O/S' headroom?) but I'm wary of the steps to take because of the below steps and outcomes to attempt fixing the no booting I firstly tried, due to misdiagnosing the situation. Note: Also tried booting with just failed HDD installed with different cables to be sure. 01 - No boot, booted from O/S Disc. I noticed 2X HDDs, where "Back-UP" D, had now changed to "C: Back-Up", and what I thought was the original O/S C: drive was now J: (But was in fact the EXT 750gb HDD I forgot was plugged in!!!) So thought somehow the drive letters had somehow changed. Ergo not booting because "C: Back-Up" had no O/S files. (I now know in fact the original C: O/S HDD must have failed and somehow D: got bumped back to C:) "If that's possible? 02 - Applied a saved system image from newly listed "C: Back-Up" (was D:) using O/S Disc tools to EXT HDD J:, but still wouldn't boot. I only then realised I'd copied a system image to my EXT HDD...Dohhh! 03 - F8 tapping to put EXT HDD first boot device. Again no boot!, and now showing still as J: but with a capacity of 80gb instead of actual 750gb!!! Q. With confusing the EXT HDD as being my O/S HDD I've re-imaged whilst the failed original INT 80gb O/S HDD was connected. May that have some bearing? (Now pulled out) Q. Now when the New INT HDD arrives and I install it, I am concerned that it will apply another drive letter other than (C:) to it, again stopping me from booting because of the previous experience above? Q. I read O/S back up images like to be installed on a partition of the same size as the original image was ripped from, but I'd prefer a bit more headroom on the new HDD for it if possible? If anyone could give me some insight how to go about this I'd be very greatful. Regards Paul More...

Hi guys, I have an issue with one of my laptops at home. Randomly (but quite often) there is no sound when I move the "sound cursor" in the speaker tray(and of course there is no sound at all when playing videos or MP3...). The sound is not muted, all is fine when we go to the control panel (no errors), but when we want to TEST if the sound works, we don't hear anything. The workaround is simple, I go to the devmgmt.msc and disable then enable the "REALTEK HD Audio device" and the sound is fine then. But as a system admin I would like to find a permanent solution, in case I have a similar issue with my users at work. What steps I have already done: - update REALTEK HD Audio driver with the latest driver available in their website (2.82). - check with Process Monitor if something is wrong when I move the cursor and have no sound, but didn't found Nothing interesting. - compared task manager processes when the sound is fine and when the sound is not working. But didn't find any diff?rences. Informations: laptop is Lenovo X230, running W7 pro x64, all updates installed, all is working fine on this laptop excepted this sound issue. Nothing is plugged into the laptop (no headphones, no speakers, no docking station, no screen). I have the issue for two month or so, all was fine at the beginning.(I need to find the real cause of the issue and not just do a system restore :) ) Thank you in advance for your help, Don't hesitate to ask complex things to try! How do I import mails and contacts etc from Outlook.pst on old pc (W2000) into LiveMail on new pc (W7)? Hi, I wanted to go into safe mode on windows 7 but it kept stopping at classpnp.sys . After reading a few threads I read about using Msconfig and checking the safe mode option under "Boot". It still keeps staying at classpnp.sys and when I hit F8 and hit "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" it seems to be able to get trough and it says it's actually loading up safe mode but then it changes to a black screen and does not change from that screen. I would appreciate and information you guys have that could solve this problem. If any of you know a command I could type in cmd to bring up the msconfig while in repair mode I could fix it because all I need to do is untick "Safe mode on startup" More...

Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts. Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine. If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives. I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change. Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean. Hi, We have a process that creates a .pdf file and writes the file to a users shared folder for example: d:\Share\Docs The shared folder is a network mapped drive. Another process then attempts to open the file for viewing. On a Windows 7 machine this take over 10 seconds to open and in the Sysinternals process monitor it shows as name not found. On a Windows 10 machine the document opens up immediately. Both machines have the same software and versions installed. Any ideas? More...

I think this started with a gpo sending out a new printer, that never installed, perhaps due to elevated permissions this particular printer evidently needs. Clients receiving this gpo will eventually have Print management, Devices and Printers, and any program trying to access any printer, including pdf writers, hang. The only way I've been able to free up a client is by doing a system restore, but some machines that have had this done end up doing it a second time, others not, which is odd. I need a different, more targeted fix method. One clue is that if I reboot a machine while not connected to the network, I can open Devices and Printers and Print Management, but if I reboot that same machine while it is connected to the network, it all hangs when I try to access it. The original gpo is removed though, so it shouldn't be going out anymore. This issue makes the client mostly unusable as any program trying to use printers, or even just grab information about printers will hang. Appreciate any ideas on how to troubleshoot and solve. Hello, I have one workstation with a remote connection problem. OS: Windows 7 enterprise 32-bit Workstation is connected to a domain. Problem started after June or July updates, I cannot connect to the workstation from any host via RDP. it just freezes on "Configuring remote session" and after few minutes it shows a message: "this computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again." All settings are set correctly, all accesses are given. Google is searched fully, neither solution worked for my situation. More...

I called Microsoft with this problem although other computer says HARD DRIVE Failure. My UEFI components /tests decreased from over 10 to 2. Passed drive test then told me to enter a code with usb flash. Problem is usb flash did not take windows os download, so I need to renter with different flash. Then I think I can proceed. Last time told me to use USB 8 GB flash. Going to try different model. Where can I download or do I need to call MS and have them do remotely like yesterday. Might have worked if flash worked. Where can I download windows os 10? Other comp company claimed os system and despite warranty would not help. I disagreed. First Ineed to fix change HARDWARE before install OS If any one can help I would greatly appreciate. Thanks Amy More...

I'm not sure what to even google for a question like this. Is there any way of increasing this timeout. Kids get distracted and have to start over. Jason More...

The following happened: I have activated TPM and Bitlocker with a powershellscript for more computers from a list with the following commands: Enable TPM: manage-bde -tpm -turnon-computer-name $ _. computer name TPM ownership + password: manage-bde -tpm -o OwnerPassword-Computername $ _. Computername Activate bitlocker: manage-bde -on C: -skiphardwaretest -wiederherstellungskennwort -computername $ _. Computername The problem is that the GPO that have the machines to put their keys in AD, on some machines was not applied. Stupidly just one of these computers for some reason (USB stick, changed hardware, updates, no idea ...) asked for the recovery key when booting today. I had to realize that in the AD no Recoverykey for the computer account is deposited and otherwise it will not be saved then because the log of the script is no longer available. On another Device I deactivated USB-boot devices in BIOS and I was able the boot the System and backup the key afterwards. But not on this… Do you still have any idea how to get the hard drive data? The OS can’t boot… Would a Microsoft case help? If so, does anyone have experience with it? Is there possibly third-party software, which can bypass the protection or encrypt the drive in another way? I am grateful for every suggestion and suggestion.
