Hello. I don't have the "Respond when anyone says "Hey Cortana" or "Try to respond only to me" settings in the Talk to Cortana settings. I just realized that I don't think I have ever had these settings since installing a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro 1709 last March. I upgraded to version 1803 in April. My Cortana settings look like this: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1311043 You help is appreciated. More...

Hello all. I have spent a good part of my day today assisting one of my helpdesk guys with a project that he is working on involving customizing the start menu layout for Windows 10, locking it down, and deploying it to a subset of my user base. We have followed this and several similar articles with no luck: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/deploymentguys/2016/03/07/windows-10-start-layout-customization/ He created a brand new profile on a fresh Windows 10 workstation and ran the Export-StartLayout Powershell cmdlet to export the config to XML. We built a GPO and enabled both the user and computer policies for Policies > Administrative Templates >Start Menu and Taskbar and configured the Start Layout policy to enabled with the file path set to where we put the XML (we put it in the GPO in sysvol so users can easily get to it to read it.). Long story short, we tested this and it is not working. GPRESULT -R and RSPO.MSC confirm that all parts of the policy are being applied and it effectively locks the start menu from further customization (as we wanted) but it's not updating the layout. We can reach the script through UNC but it just doesn't seem to want to work. Any suggestions? More...

Hi All, We have a mix of Windows 10 x64 clients, version 1607, 1709 and 1803. We deploy the updates for these versions each month. We're seeing a couple of odd issues that I suspect have the same root, but I can't figure it out. It's on all versions. When someone goes to a website or intranet site that prompts for credentials, or a UNC with explorer, we get the following windows - https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1308201 Or https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1308203 All good up to now! The problem/annoying thing is these windows tend to either pop up without focus, so you start typing and nothing happens (nothing *seems* to have focus at the time) or they pop up behind everything else. This isn't a case of clicking off to do something else - you load ie, go to the site address, drum your fingers waiting for the prompt and either it pops up with no focus or pops up behind. Sometimes it works as expected though. What could be causing this? Is there anything we can do? *UPDATE I think this isn't just Windows 10 - I've just realised similar happens in Server 2016 - I've been in notepad, loaded an explorer window and when I click back on notepad it has focus, but the explorer window is still on top while i type away in notepad. I need to click the explorer window again, then notepad again to get notepad on top. More...

Dear all, I have been redirected here from the post I have made here. My doubt is related to the fact that the following settings on "Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Microsoft Edge" are not making any effect on the Edge side, (after a reboot, after log off / log on...) I have already checked at the registry level if these settings are written, and they are. Any idea? I have already open a post on Microsoft Edge forum and my feelings are that from the GP perspective things are done correctly. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1311065 https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1311062 Matteo More...

ACL problem on registry key: ACL – non-canonical form Background: I’m modifying a 3rd-party MSI-package with a custom action which sets permissions on a registry key installed by the 3rd-party MSI in the HKLM hive. The custom action is a Powershellscript that use the Set-Acl cmdlet. My target machines are running Windows 10 1607. This is what the powershell-script looks like: $ACLPath = "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\RCO" $NewACL = Get-Acl $ACLPath $NewRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RegistryAccessRule("BUILTIN\Anv?ndare","FullControl","Allow") $NewACL.SetAccessRule($NewRule) Set-Acl -Path $ACLPath -AclObject $NewACL My encountered issue: When the script attempts to edit the ACL ($NewACL.SetAccessRule($NewRule)) the action fails explaining that ”This access control list is not in canonical form and thus cannot be modified” copy paste of error message: PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Z:\Projects\890.RCO_R-CARD_M5_5.42.2\Scripts\ACL2.ps1 Exception calling "SetAccessRule" with "1" argument(s): "Denna ?tkomstkontrollista ?r inte i kanonisk form och kan d?rf?r inte modifieras." At Z:\Projects\890.RCO_R-CARD_M5_5.42.2\Scripts\ACL2.ps1:8 char:1 + $NewACL.SetAccessRule($NewRule) + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When I open RegEdit and try to open the permissions on the registry key in question i get the following dialog: ”The permissions of RCO are incorrectly sorted and this may mean that certain items are not valid.” ”-Press Sort to sort the permissions correctly.” ”-Press Cancel if you do not want to make any changes (the view will be read-only)” Pressing the ’Sort’ button will solve the problem - running the script will not fire any errors. My question is if there is a way to perform this ’Sort’ or 'repair' function on a registry key ACL from powershell or vbscript, to include in the custom action script. More...

I would like to schedule a task, triggered by any *.nc file being saved to a folder named W. I would like for these actions to follow: 1) Folder X is deleted; 2) Folder W is copied; 3) Folder W is pasted in Folder X's location; 4) Folder W(1) is renamed Folder X. I will do the same for Folders Y & Z, respectively. Can this be done in the Task Scheduler? If so, then how? Alternatively, is there a better way to accomplish this? More...

Hello, I understand the common opinion is we should just learn to deal with Windows 10 updates, and in most cases maintaining up to date systems is a good practice; however, I have a few clients that need to have these automatic updates blocked. Not deferred, not schedule for convenient times, but blocked entirely. These machines are not on a domain, but are pro edition (1703). They are connected to equipment or run software that requires manual prep work and scheduled downtime to do the updates. Several windows 10 machines we've been able to block updates by making the following changes, but on one particular machine the changes keep reverting: Disable BITS Disable Delivery Optimization Service Disable Update Orchestrator Service Disable Windows Update Service Disable Auto app updates from within windows 10 Disable Update Orchestrator scheduled tasks Disable Windows Update Scheduled Tasks Set local policy to disable automatic updates Set local policy to specify a local fake wsus server set local policy to prevent connecting to windows update server Uninstalling update assistant Reboot and verify all above services and tasks are still disabled This machine had a pending update when we were initially tasked with disabling the updates, so I am not sure if that is what keeps undoing the changes. Anyone have any suggestions for permanently stopping windows updates? Ideally I would like changes that can be undone so during maintenance windows we can re-enable the updates. More...

Need Help with fixing save files
BetaTime posted a topic in Microsoft Products Support & Discussions
So I have screwed up. To put it as short as possible, the witcher 3 by itself deletes the old save files and keeps only 7 of them for me to access. I browsed trough the internet, looking for a solution to retrieve deleted save files and I?ve stumbeled upon a problem on your site. Someone said that it?s possible to do a selective folder restore trough an app called ShadowCopyView. Unfortunately I didnt succeed in the process because I cant find that option to restore, so I have used the copy option and I copied the files that I need to the gamesaves folder. When I launched the game, the save files wouldnt load and the game says that the files are dammaged thus cannot be loaded... Does anyone here know the solution please? More... -

Computer locked: Prompt for BitLocker recovery key on blue screen - without previous BitLocker configuration for disk encryption The problem as above - the notebook functioning correctly and out of the blue while starting it requests the Bitlocker RecoveryKey. Never before has the bitlocker been configured (consciously by the user) on this hardware to encrypt the disk, the bitlocker has been run once, a few months earlier, solely to read data from the encrypted external disk. Trying to use that password - unfortunately, it does not give positive results. There are no saved keys on MS accounts (which were not intentionally transmitted), nor printed or saved – as it has not been set by user. The computer has never worked in AD, so it’s not the case that the settings are given administratively "by the organization". Checking the status of the bitlocker from the console indicates that the disk is encrypted and the password is in TPM, but for unknown reason, at the start of the computer bilocker does not read it from there. There was no attempt to interfere with hardware, BIOS, etc. Searching the web shows that the problem has recently appeared not only i: https://www.dell.com/community/Windows-10/BitLocker-need-a-key-but-I-never-installed-it / td-p / 6019486 / page / 5 Unfortunately, the solutions provided in this forum - did not bring a solution. Although this is a Dell forum - it can be seen that it is not dependent on the hardware, the XPS13 user writes there, my notebook is Asus. BTW the hardware manufacturer claims that it has no affect on this problem, disk encryption has not been configured by the manufacturer (the system was not installed and configured on the computer). Any ideas what it can be and how to get around it? Error after upgrade? How is it possible that the disk is encrypted without the user's knowledge? And why the password stored in the TPM (where did it come from?) Was no longer available for the bitlocker? More...

Hi, when i make new shortcut for download folder with *explorer* and *space* in front of the path name, right click on folder and pin to taskbar, when the download folder open, at the same time open another folder (separate) "this pc" and i don't know why. This happens on W8.1 not on W7. On W7 it's very simple (with the same method but on w7 it work well). I have try many methods, but none of them work. Have any idea of how? Image example: https://image.prntscr.com/image/aNHdMlXSQO_jRwhhDT1-aQ.png Image: left folder is the pinned folder, and the right folder icon opens when i click on the left folder (W8.1). Thank you. Ok, I'm probably not the first person to ask about this. Why on earth, can I not see any of my connected network printers under 'Devices and Printers' of Windows 8? The devices are without question, 100% connected and registered with the OS, as evidenced from their presence within the 'Print Queues' section of Device Manager, and various software packages, when accessing the 'Print' dialog. I can't even find any evidence of the printers within Print Management! What is going on? More...

I want to schedule a windows task to run when a secondary output device (e.g., VGA monitor or HDMI A/V receiver is turned on or off) but I'm not sure which event should be used for this. I found something related to network cable plug/unplug here How to launch a command on network connection/disconnection? basically, the event is Log: Microsoft-Windows-NetworkProfile/Operational Source: NetworkProfile Event ID: 10000 for connect and 10001 for disconnect but couldn't find anything for external audio/video devices. Any such event or events exist? If not, any other way to do this? Thanks More...
