  1. Ok, I'm probably not the first person to ask about this. Why on earth, can I not see any of my connected network printers under 'Devices and Printers' of Windows 8? The devices are without question, 100% connected and registered with the OS, as evidenced from their presence within the 'Print Queues' section of Device Manager, and various software packages, when accessing the 'Print' dialog. I can't even find any evidence of the printers within Print Management! What is going on? More...

  3. Just reimaged to Windows 8.1 the other day and now I can't see any of my mapped network drives when I go to File/Open from some programs. When I go to Open I only see my local drives but no network drives. This is not happening in all programs but is happening in some. Most recently I'm trying to use the Windows 7 USB creation tool thing and can only see my local drive but it's happened in a few other programs as well. Anyone know what might cause this? I can browse to the drives just fine and some programs can list them normally. Very strange. More...
  4. Can anyone tell me how to set an image (.gif) transparent background in Windows 8 Paint (ver. 6.2)? Been scratching head for a couple of hours now but can't for the life of me see how to set a transparent colour. I'm sure that the XP version of pint allowed this. Thanks, More...

  9. I am using GP user preferences to create shortcuts on my users' desktops. On all my Vista/Win7 machines they are fine and the icons are what I set them to be. on all my Win8 machines the icon is just a blank white square. If I right-click and view the icon, the correct image appears. But when the user is looking at the desktop the image is blank. I have upgraded a couple machines, scratch built one, and purchased an OEM version on a new laptop. All are the same: blank shortcut icons. Surely I'm not the only person testing Win8 in a domain environment, right? More...

  18. Hi, For an unknown reason (my guess is an update was automatically applied and automatically restarted), my computer rebooted overnight and in the morning was stuck in a failed boot loop. When trying to boot I get the message: "Preparing to configure windows" "Do not turn off your computer" Then after a few seconds the computer reboots and does the same thing. Safe mode yields the same result. Using the F8 option to restore last known good configuration doesn't change anything. I can boot into the recovery console. I have tried running SFC /SCANNOW in a command prompt in the recovery console and get the message: "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again." Restarting of course doesn't change anything. So it seems something happened to an unfinished update and is still pending. I think if I can remove this pending update I might be able to boot normally, or at least run SFC and hopefully then boot normally. Does anyone know what I should try to remove this pending update that appears to be preventing a successful boot? Thanks! More...
  19. Hello. In any window if the view is set to Details there are columns in it of course. Almost all the time they are not as wide to see all the content in each of it. "Size all columns to fit" option is very handful in this situation, BUT it's too annoying to do it in each folder. Is there a way to set this option by default? When I open any window with Details view, or change a view in already opened windowed to Details view - all columns will be automatically set to fit their content. More...

  21. I have read about this issue on many Vista and 7 forums. No one has since answered why the O/S suddenly won't open zip files. Simply: A user received a zip attachment in outlook with two .csv files in it. Whether she tried to open or save them from the e-mail message or open them or extract them from the saved zip file, error code "0x80004005: unknown error" gets thrown. I was able to open the same files on a Windows XP machine without any issue, so the files are not corrupted. The Windows 7 O/S is giving no other signs of an issue. I am looking for a solution other than "go get another company's product to do what 7 should natively do." More...
  22. No matter what I type into the search box in the start menu, windows 7 search always returns "No items match your search." This happens even with things that I know for certain exist. (e.g. cmd) FWIW I once uninstalled windows search because I didn't think I would use it, but then I realized that this removes ALL search functions and not just the realtime search (which didn't happen in windows XP.) When I reinstalled it, this started happening. No matter what I try (e.g. uninstalling and reinstalling again) this still happens. More...
