So I understand that WMIC outputs to Unicode, and most applets and commands uses (and deals with) ANSI. One of the ways to deal with this is to pipe the output to the MORE command. It's a startup script run in the context of a Computer Administrator as a group policy. That seems to work on some computers, and not with others. The computers are Windows 7 Enterprise x86 and x64. Commands that I use to process the output don't work (using "find" command"). When you open these log files it outputs, it's blank except for having a few blank lines (like someone hit Enter key without anything else). Any ideas why this is happening and how to work around this? Edit: I'm not sure if it's related, but I spot checked a few PCs to see if I can find any coorlation between the working ones and the non-working ones. The 2 PCs I checked that were "broken" had version 6.1.7601.24214 6.1.7601.24024 The 2 PCs I checked that were fine have: 6.1.7601.24117 6.1.7601.23391 To find the versions, I UNC'd into C:\Windows\System32 and checked the version of the ntoskrnl.exe file. Hi, I have a situation where a standard domain user who is not supposed to have admin rights has admin rights in a local PC. I have checked the account permissions and it does not have admin rights. I have also checked the Tools>Computer Management ? Groups > Administrators and confirmed that it does not have the user added to this group. This computer officially has 2 admin accounts, one is the domain admin and one local admin. I am cracking my head trying to figure out how this user got admin privileges even though locally and in the AD this user does not have the rights assigned to them. I have removed the user profile in this computer and have created a new profile but that did not seem to help. Please advise if I have missed something here. Thank you. More...

Hi, I wanted to go into safe mode on windows 7 but it kept stopping at classpnp.sys . After reading a few threads I read about using Msconfig and checking the safe mode option under "Boot". It still keeps staying at classpnp.sys and when I hit F8 and hit "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" it seems to be able to get trough and it says it's actually loading up safe mode but then it changes to a black screen and does not change from that screen. I would appreciate and information you guys have that could solve this problem. If any of you know a command I could type in cmd to bring up the msconfig while in repair mode I could fix it because all I need to do is untick "Safe mode on startup" More...

Dear All, I came across an unusual situation and count on your help since I cannot resolve it. Scenario: Domain network with W2012R2 server as a DC, a spare DC and several other servers both virtual and physical. Several dozen workstations. One of the workstations (W7pro-64) got a failure with cyclic BSOD. Disks C:,D: and SYSTEM_DRV were restored from the 24-hour-old backup. "Preserve domain trust token on target drive" option is checked, though I do not know if it's correct. Anyway I see no way change this. After that the trust relationship was with the domain was broken with the following symptoms: 1. Login not possible with network cable plugged. The system refused to recognize any domain users. 2. RDP connections to the workstation fail. 3. Impossible to connect to MS Exchange. Additional information: Domain Member PolicySettingWinning GPODomain member: Maximum machine account password age 999 days Default Domain Policy What I tried: 1. Nltest query C:\>nltest /query Flags: 0 Connection Status = 1786 0x6fa ERROR_NO_TRUST_LSA_SECRET The command completed successfully 2. Nltest reset C:\>nltest /sc_reset: I_NetLogonControl failed: Status = 1786 0x6fa ERROR_NO_TRUST_LSA_SECRET 3. Netdom reset Also no luck - access denied. 4. Netsh netsh winsock reset netsh int ip reset and attempt to join the domain with the wizard. No luck. 5. Multiple attempts to unjoin the domain. Every possible combination. Under domain users with administrative rights, under enabled local admin account. With network cable plugged and unplugged. The result is the same - ACCESS DENIED. 6. wmic start /B /W wmic.exe /interactiveSmiley Surprisedff ComputerSystem Where "Name='%computername%'" Call UnJoinDomainOrWorkgroup FUnjoinOptions=0 No result at all. 7. POwershell cmdlet Reset-ComputerMachinePassword Reset-ComputerMachinePassword -Server "DC01" -Credential Domain01\Admin01 Also leads to access denied error All the methods I tried have one symptom in common - access is denied. I think that there is some fundamental problem in recovery. Please, advise how to resolve the problem. More...

Hi guys, I have an issue with one of my laptops at home. Randomly (but quite often) there is no sound when I move the "sound cursor" in the speaker tray(and of course there is no sound at all when playing videos or MP3...). The sound is not muted, all is fine when we go to the control panel (no errors), but when we want to TEST if the sound works, we don't hear anything. The workaround is simple, I go to the devmgmt.msc and disable then enable the "REALTEK HD Audio device" and the sound is fine then. But as a system admin I would like to find a permanent solution, in case I have a similar issue with my users at work. What steps I have already done: - update REALTEK HD Audio driver with the latest driver available in their website (2.82). - check with Process Monitor if something is wrong when I move the cursor and have no sound, but didn't found Nothing interesting. - compared task manager processes when the sound is fine and when the sound is not working. But didn't find any diff?rences. Informations: laptop is Lenovo X230, running W7 pro x64, all updates installed, all is working fine on this laptop excepted this sound issue. Nothing is plugged into the laptop (no headphones, no speakers, no docking station, no screen). I have the issue for two month or so, all was fine at the beginning.(I need to find the real cause of the issue and not just do a system restore :) ) Thank you in advance for your help, Don't hesitate to ask complex things to try! O/S Win7 C: INT 80gb System Drive D: INT 500gb Back-Up J: EXT HDD 750gb WD Black In brief: My O/S 80gb HDD C: has failed. I've sent off for a new 1 TB HDD to apply a system image from an internal HDD back up image. (I'll also want to partition it...Best size for an O/S' headroom?) but I'm wary of the steps to take because of the below steps and outcomes to attempt fixing the no booting I firstly tried, due to misdiagnosing the situation. Note: Also tried booting with just failed HDD installed with different cables to be sure. 01 - No boot, booted from O/S Disc. I noticed 2X HDDs, where "Back-UP" D, had now changed to "C: Back-Up", and what I thought was the original O/S C: drive was now J: (But was in fact the EXT 750gb HDD I forgot was plugged in!!!) So thought somehow the drive letters had somehow changed. Ergo not booting because "C: Back-Up" had no O/S files. (I now know in fact the original C: O/S HDD must have failed and somehow D: got bumped back to C:) "If that's possible? 02 - Applied a saved system image from newly listed "C: Back-Up" (was D:) using O/S Disc tools to EXT HDD J:, but still wouldn't boot. I only then realised I'd copied a system image to my EXT HDD...Dohhh! 03 - F8 tapping to put EXT HDD first boot device. Again no boot!, and now showing still as J: but with a capacity of 80gb instead of actual 750gb!!! Q. With confusing the EXT HDD as being my O/S HDD I've re-imaged whilst the failed original INT 80gb O/S HDD was connected. May that have some bearing? (Now pulled out) Q. Now when the New INT HDD arrives and I install it, I am concerned that it will apply another drive letter other than (C:) to it, again stopping me from booting because of the previous experience above? Q. I read O/S back up images like to be installed on a partition of the same size as the original image was ripped from, but I'd prefer a bit more headroom on the new HDD for it if possible? If anyone could give me some insight how to go about this I'd be very greatful. Regards Paul More...

Hello Forum, I recently purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad YOGA X1 3rd Gen. As far as hardware, she's fully loaded with the highest specs possible. Running Windows 10 Pro. Right off the bat it had a bunch of issues. I did a bunch of updates, most of them went away. I had to do some "regedit" for 1 problem where the keyboard would beep a bunch if I typed too quickly and it would set off hotkeys. Currently only 2 problems remain and if I can be rid of them I can be rid of my buyers remorse. Problem 1: File explorer opens on its own. Random. Multiple times. Can be hours between occurrences or minutes. Sometimes it will even go an entire session of work without doing it. Problem 2: The mouse floats upward and becomes useless from the touchpad. This occurs when I open the laptop from being closed and asleep, or when I flip it from tablet mode BACK TO laptop mode. It stops after roughly 3 to 5 seconds and then the touchpad is okay to use. If this can be fixed through "regedit" I'd love some walk through. Everything on the device is up to date. Any info you all need just ask and I will try me best to provide it. Best, Booshiba More...

Hi! So, I just got a new notebook with Windows 10. I'm coming from Windows 7. In previous system, W7 as mentioned, I had 309.000+ files indexed for a windows.edb size of 1,4 GB. I transferred nearly everything on the new machine and let the indexer run. The first time it indexed 280.000+ files for a stunning 60 GB (sixty gigabytes) of windows.edb. Decided to delete and rebuild, I deleted as many mails and files (a backup was already in place) as possible before re-indexing again. The second time it indexed 155.000+ files for a windows.edb size of 15 GB+. So I deleted more files and emails, in the meantime the Search Indexer decided to delete+build on its own. It's now on 109.000+ files indexed for a 6,5 GB windows.edb file. In the end: Windows 7 was working great with indexing and Windows 10 can't do the same work with the same data. The parameters for indexing properties and contents are the same in both W7 and W10 for the extensions I typically use. At a certain point in time I was having issues with W7+Search Indexer and was able to uninstall (n.b.: uninstall, not deactivate) and reinstall; that fixed a problem I had. In W10 I'm not able to find any way to uninstall and reinstall it. Thank you in advance. More...

comprehensive list of UI and functional differences between Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro Hi, Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of UI and functional differences between Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro? We want to upgrade a bunch of computers to Windows 10 but perhaps provide a cheat sheet to users so that some functions are different or new options they need to be aware of or UI elements are different. I think this would lessen the support calls after the upgrade. Thanks, More...

Hi, I use RDP for the most of my daily work to connect to four other PCs. My local PC is used for mail and RDP, that's it. I'm using Windows 10 version 10.0.17134.228 I can use RDP fine for maybe a few hours and then the local taskbar will plant itself over the RDP sessions, making it SO hard to use the RDP sessions that it becomes unusable. I've tried all the methods that other people have recommended, restarting explorer.exe etc. and making sure that the local machine has no notifications and NOTHING works. When we use RDP, surely we don't CARE what the local machine is up to, it's just a means to use other machines without interruption? Is there SERIOUSLY no way of stopping the taskbar in Windows 10 taking over the RDP taskbar? Can this be rectified in an update? I was praying that the Anniversary update would solve this but no :( Any help to resolve this would be appreciated as this drives me NUTS on a daily basis! Many thanks! More...
