Hello Forum, I recently purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad YOGA X1 3rd Gen. As far as hardware, she's fully loaded with the highest specs possible. Running Windows 10 Pro. Right off the bat it had a bunch of issues. I did a bunch of updates, most of them went away. I had to do some "regedit" for 1 problem where the keyboard would beep a bunch if I typed too quickly and it would set off hotkeys. Currently only 2 problems remain and if I can be rid of them I can be rid of my buyers remorse. Problem 1: File explorer opens on its own. Random. Multiple times. Can be hours between occurrences or minutes. Sometimes it will even go an entire session of work without doing it. Problem 2: The mouse floats upward and becomes useless from the touchpad. This occurs when I open the laptop from being closed and asleep, or when I flip it from tablet mode BACK TO laptop mode. It stops after roughly 3 to 5 seconds and then the touchpad is okay to use. If this can be fixed through "regedit" I'd love some walk through. Everything on the device is up to date. Any info you all need just ask and I will try me best to provide it. Best, Booshiba More...

Hi! So, I just got a new notebook with Windows 10. I'm coming from Windows 7. In previous system, W7 as mentioned, I had 309.000+ files indexed for a windows.edb size of 1,4 GB. I transferred nearly everything on the new machine and let the indexer run. The first time it indexed 280.000+ files for a stunning 60 GB (sixty gigabytes) of windows.edb. Decided to delete and rebuild, I deleted as many mails and files (a backup was already in place) as possible before re-indexing again. The second time it indexed 155.000+ files for a windows.edb size of 15 GB+. So I deleted more files and emails, in the meantime the Search Indexer decided to delete+build on its own. It's now on 109.000+ files indexed for a 6,5 GB windows.edb file. In the end: Windows 7 was working great with indexing and Windows 10 can't do the same work with the same data. The parameters for indexing properties and contents are the same in both W7 and W10 for the extensions I typically use. At a certain point in time I was having issues with W7+Search Indexer and was able to uninstall (n.b.: uninstall, not deactivate) and reinstall; that fixed a problem I had. In W10 I'm not able to find any way to uninstall and reinstall it. Thank you in advance. More...

comprehensive list of UI and functional differences between Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro Hi, Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of UI and functional differences between Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 Pro? We want to upgrade a bunch of computers to Windows 10 but perhaps provide a cheat sheet to users so that some functions are different or new options they need to be aware of or UI elements are different. I think this would lessen the support calls after the upgrade. Thanks, More...

Hi, I use RDP for the most of my daily work to connect to four other PCs. My local PC is used for mail and RDP, that's it. I'm using Windows 10 version 10.0.17134.228 I can use RDP fine for maybe a few hours and then the local taskbar will plant itself over the RDP sessions, making it SO hard to use the RDP sessions that it becomes unusable. I've tried all the methods that other people have recommended, restarting explorer.exe etc. and making sure that the local machine has no notifications and NOTHING works. When we use RDP, surely we don't CARE what the local machine is up to, it's just a means to use other machines without interruption? Is there SERIOUSLY no way of stopping the taskbar in Windows 10 taking over the RDP taskbar? Can this be rectified in an update? I was praying that the Anniversary update would solve this but no :( Any help to resolve this would be appreciated as this drives me NUTS on a daily basis! Many thanks! More...

Hope to be fine here with this question. It is about Windows 10 2018 March operating on physical machine. It hosts Oracle Virtualbox Hypervisor with two Debian virtual machines on top of stack. Virtual machines want to get quite periodic updates (patches, fixes, security updates and so on). Quite every day except for weekends there are new updates. Currently they go through V.B. NAT network to Internet to fetch updates. Regarding generated traffic it is of double amount as each of two v.machines fetches same updates for itself separately. So to reduce the load of internet connection the idea is to setup on WSL cache-proxy for Debian package management used on virtual machines for package management. These two V.B. virtual machines should connect to host's WSL through host-only adapter each, dpkg-cache proxy should listen to these 2 host-only adapters. The choice is apt-cacher-ng, it acts as proxy dpkg system clients however shows extended cache capabilities regarding downloaded packages. Two Debian virtual machines should connect to Debian servers through apt-cacher-ng, latter one operating within WSL. What level of feasibility might be this goal? Can anyone immediately see any technical points doing this goal unreachable? In some WSL document, side myself found one time short notice WSL was not good for server application, each proxy has a server-element in its function. Actually a proxy is no server so from this point of view no conflict. I am not sure if generally there are cons to be considered in current planning phase. Apt-Cacher-NG User Manual More...

Folder sizes not reporting correct number of files or total size Win10 Prod build 1803 Hi everyone, Short story: Update 1803 borked my previous hard drive/OS during installation, so I decided to upgrade my boot drive and clean install since there was no recovering my old boot drive OS. I ran a (manual) backup of all of my files from my storage disks (to my external USB drive). Upon comparing folder sizes, I noticed certain folders on my backup drive had a significantly lower number of files and sizes were different. Did a bunch of troubleshooting (including trying a separate external USB drive)...fast forward to me trying the same (secondary) USB drive on my Win10 Home (build 1709) laptop, where the correct number of files and folder size was reported. Back on my desktop (Win10 Pro) I found that shortening the path (the files were in a 4-folder deep hierarchy...a bunch of albums in their respective folders) allowed the correct number of files and correct folder size to show in folder properties. I have not validated 100%, but I'm pretty sure I don't have any files that have an absolute path > 255/256 (whatever the limit is), so I don't think the registry update to support paths > this will do anything. I'm pretty sure this is a defect, and I *think* specific to Win10 1803. Does anyone else have this issue or know if an update is coming? I spent hours trying to figure out what was happening and started freaking because I thought one of my drives was starting to take a dump. Thanks in advance! More...

I have encountered a number of directories that now show incorrect “properties” information after the recent Windows 10 upgrade to the 1803 Feature Update. Most directories that I have looked at still show valid information. But in some specific directories the calculated size, number of files, and number of folders is wildly inaccurate. Prior to the 1803 update, the information appeared to be valid for these directories that are now in question. From one of these subdirectories, the “CNT +” subdirectory should include everything below it. By just taking a brief look at the immediate subdirectories it can easily be seen that they describe more utilized space, number of files, and folders than indicated in the “CNT +” subdirectory itself. In actuality, there are approximately 31K files, 4.5K folders, and a size of about 4.1G in total for the “CNT +” subdirectory where the current properties information shows just 87.2M for size with 695 files and 95 folders. The directory structure and expected files are physically present. I have walked the subdirectory structure and can see the expected components. For some unexplainable reason, a large number of these files are not being counted anymore in the higher level subdirectories. It is not until you get deep into the subdirectory structure that the properties information becomes credible again. It just looks like in some of the subdirectories that a large number of files and folders are being ignored. I still haven’t been able to figure out why. This has nothing to do with “hidden” files or other system related file information. These are just plain user files. The subdirectories in question have been in the same structure and naming convention for years. And I regularly used the associated properties information to verify the current backup size. That is now failing miserably. More...

So I understand that WMIC outputs to Unicode, and most applets and commands uses (and deals with) ANSI. One of the ways to deal with this is to pipe the output to the MORE command. It's a startup script run in the context of a Computer Administrator as a group policy. That seems to work on some computers, and not with others. The computers are Windows 7 Enterprise x86 and x64. Commands that I use to process the output don't work (using "find" command"). When you open these log files it outputs, it's blank except for having a few blank lines (like someone hit Enter key without anything else). Any ideas why this is happening and how to work around this? Edit: I'm not sure if it's related, but I spot checked a few PCs to see if I can find any coorlation between the working ones and the non-working ones. The 2 PCs I checked that were "broken" had version 6.1.7601.24214 6.1.7601.24024 The 2 PCs I checked that were fine have: 6.1.7601.24117 6.1.7601.23391 To find the versions, I UNC'd into C:\Windows\System32 and checked the version of the ntoskrnl.exe file.
