did somebody here had experience with Vista x64 installed on a PC with 4GB of ram? how much memory does it waste compared to x86? if it's more than 700-800Mb then installing x64 and having to face with additional problems due to lack of drivers maybe it just isn't worth it. * QT is moving to GPLv3.* QT is now a truly open and free software offering.* Much more than gnome.* I may switch to kde now.* QT is far superior to .NET and Java and we will see adoption increase due to this and its very exciting.* kudos to Trolltech and RMS for coming together for this history making moment.* Once again, Microsoft is through.* Hang it up, Microsofts script kiddies cant hope to keep up with the FSF and its members.* Vi$ta is a legacy OS and now Visual $tudios is a legacy development platform. I think I've discovered a compiler bug. Well, I don't know wether this is known or not, but if I could get confirmations with both the VS2005 and VS2008 c++ compilers. I'm working my way through [the safe bool idiom article], and specifically, i found the error implementing the OperatorNot class: // operator! version class Testable { bool not_ok_; public: explicit Testable(bool b=true):not_ok_(!b) {} bool operator!() const { return not_ok_; } }; Notice the not (!) in the initialiser. When run it does not initialise the not_ok member to false, when instanitating the class like: Testable test; Here's the disassembly of the constructor: public: explicit Testable(bool b=true):ok_(b) {} 004115F0 push ebp 004115F1 mov ebp,esp 004115F3 sub esp,0CCh 004115F9 push ebx 004115FA push esi 004115FB push edi 004115FC push ecx 004115FD lea edi,[ebp-0CCh] 00411603 mov ecx,33h 00411608 mov eax,0CCCCCCCCh 0041160D rep stos dword ptr es:[edi] 0041160F pop ecx 00411610 mov dword ptr [ebp-8],ecx 00411613 mov eax, dword ptr [this] 00411616 mov cl,byte ptr 00411619 mov byte ptr [eax],cl 0041161B mov eax, dword ptr [this] 0041161E pop edi 0041161F pop esi 00411620 pop ebx 00411621 mov esp,ebp 00411623 pop ebp 00411624 ret 4 WTF. I've checked multiple times, and the original source does have the !. Yet when I switch to the disassembly view, and single-step into the constructor, it shows it (the bit marked in red) without the !. The bit embolded is the actual native code setting the member. Am I missing something ? This is using VS2005sp1 (c1xx.dll version 14.0.50727.762) More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

One of the many things I miss from Windows XP is it's lack of a more active networking icon in the system tray. It's nice to have the little globe on the networking icon to show you that you're connected to the internet. Not that it always shows up-to-date results and not that you couldn't figure that out yourself. But XP used to have a network icon that actively showed if there was traffic going out or coming in. And more important, the little lights stayed lit if there was solid traffic. That used to be extremely useful in knowing what your machine was doing and what you were waiting on. It was even more helpful as a web developer to see if your waiting was because of a large payload, a stuck recursive call, or the server just not responding in a timely fashion. Instead we have this dinky status icon in Vista which blinks slowly*in a very predictable fashion to indicate activity. It's useless. Does anyone know of a way to get more of the XP network icon in Vista? And yes,*I know that the sidebar could be used, but that isn't an ideal solution. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

I'm looking to do the same kind of connection polling as shown in the screenshot being done by the Windows Routing and Remote Access Snap-in : http://www.devel.ws/untitled.jpg I need to fetch*this data*from wherever necesarry because I am writing a proxy server that needs to know the public source port as well as the private source port in order to work properly-- see symmetric nat on wikipedia if you don't understand this. It would be good to know the very least, the namespace and objects to use to get this data. THANKS! More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Anyone running VS2008 on a Dell Precision M4300? I’ve been having some problems of late running VS2008, it’s hanging and has to be restarted about 20 times a day at the moment on my laptop.* The project I’m working on is in TFS and I can check it out to several other machines with no issue.* I think I have tracked it down to the Intel Turbo Memory card.* I removed it and wipped the machine for good meassure and the problem went away, put a replacement card in and the problems back. Now before I RMA the laptop with dell (maybe it the motherboard), was just wondering if there is anyone else having the same problem (hangs when you build) or if anyone is using a M4300 with ITM card without issue.* Strangly it’s only VS that has the problem, I do a lot of other resource intensive stuff on that machine without any issue. Cheers, Stephen. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

Hi All! I'm having a very disturbing issue.* It's the only thing I don't like about Vista. I'm running Vista 64, with a Creative X-Fi sound card, with the latest X-Fi drivers. Audio sucks the big one. The audio separation is *absolutely terrible*.* Listening to the same CD in XP sounds fantastic, while in Vista the sounds all crash together and distort, with the same mixer settings. Is there a way to get Vista to actually sound GOOD? Creative Alchemy does not fix this. Are there any sound cards that sound as good under Vista, as the X-Fi does under XP? I haven't seen any audio reviews that specifically cover the new Vista sound stack, comparing it to XP's.* It's such an immense issue for me, as it really ruins sound enjoyment. More... I can't install Pre-SP1 on this machine right now because I don't have the time to reinstall the entire OS when it goes live. So a little question to the people who do have it installed - Does Vista SP1 fix the annoying "Move" bug that stops you from moving any custom windows (e.g. MSN Messenger, iTunes, etc)? Exact bug: - Open MSN Messenger Conversation Window - Reduce its size to less than full screen - Set the border to stylised - Right click on the Conversation's task on the task bar - Select "Move" - Observe as Vista places the cursor outside of the border and nothing happens (Does Vista actually move the curse and click? Isn't there a better way?) More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
