How to?Download in MPEG-1 as opposed to MPEG-4
BeeCeeBee replied to caskin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Since this is a fairly old thread, I am posting this more for the benefit of the last poster. Wouldn't it be nice if that were so. Unfortunately the data we put in to our machines is what it is and no amount of playing around with file extensions is going to change that. While I cannot give you the technical reason for it, I suspect that, in the rare case where an extension change seems to work, it has more to do with the program playing the file then it does with the extension. It would appear that it is playing despite the change rather then as a result of it. Obviously there are means of effecting change (none of which need discussing here) but suggesting to people that they can change the basic attributes of a file by simply changing the file extension is asking for all sorts of problems. -
Without looking deeper into what may possibly have gone wrong, it would seem that it really may simply be a faulty drive. CDs and DVDs are read by different components of the same drive. It is not unusual for one to fail and the other to be just fine. That is probably not what you want to hear but it may save you a lot of aggravation if you accept that as a probability.

If you have uninstalled Norton then make sure you get all the remnants as they can come back and be really annoying. Use the following to be sure. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

I suspect that there is something downloaded in your past that was IE specific. Browser speed should not be that significant a difference. To the best of my knowledge no one from the FPCH team has made a specific recommendation regarding Opera although a member or members may have.

Exam Question Windows 2000 SP4 Upgrade
BeeCeeBee replied to SuperD's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Actually SuperD it seems like a pretty good idea now that we know its there. Certainly would save on paper and ink if there were no after hours printing being done. The bigger question is why would anyone think that it would be on the exam if the answer was a simple NO. As home users we would just never think of limiting printer time and that, probably, is why no one here knew of its existence. I, of course, did know but didn't want to seem smarter than the rest. :D We all believe that, don't we? -
Read the suggestions that I gave you and make sure you have 1 and only 1 good antivirus program at least 1 and, better, 2 anti malware programs and a decent firewall. The 2 antimalware programs that are part of the disinfection process are both excellent. (SUPERantimalware and Malwarebytes.) As for antivirus use either Avast or Avira if you need a free program. The eset paid suite is highly recommended as well.

£44.00 indicates that the problem required no hardware. Glad you got it back but if you continue using it without proper protection form malware it will not be the last £44.00 you spend on it. I don't mean to seem harsh but better to face reality than constant repair bills. If you do have trouble with your router please post a new thread under networking and we will help you deal with it there.

yet another question guys, hopefully easier!
BeeCeeBee replied to Kingpin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Kingpin what I have done is a little research on something that I know little about. I beleive that it is very possible that it is a bios issue. I also know that someone like Tootech, Dalo Harkin or Dirty Polo who deal with hardware issues will be on soon enough. If it were me I would wait. -

BeeCeeBee replied to Kingpin's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
DPMS is Display Power Management System and it relates to compatability between your graphics card and the monitor. I am frankly not sure how. Assuming that this is the same monitor that worked before (and with your temper one can not be sure ) it would seem that you may have done more than change your boot options in the bios. This is not an area that I am comfortable and suggest you wait on someone better equipped to direct you in the bios. Preferably without breaking another monitor. -
A memory stick is easier but I will give you both methods. On a working pc download the programs using Internet explorer. When it asks you if you want to run or save the program select save. It should as you for a location to save the file. Select something simple like the desktop. Once it is saved simply move it to theUSB memory stick (which can be opened by looking in my computer and it should be the last drive mentioned) or burn it to a cd. The problem with burning is that you must use the software available on that PC and I have no idea what that may be. As I said, a memory stick (flash drive) is easier and they are very cheap to purchase. You do not need a large capacity drive for this.

Did you read the following? http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/5629-malware-disinfection-limited-no-internet-access.html You may have to use another PC to get the programs. You can download the programs and put them onto a memory stick or burn them to a cd. Make sure that they are copied to the stick or disc and then install the programs from the stick.(disc) on your pc. Also once you do please note the instructions about normal and safe mode usage in the above link.

A dependency service problem is usually a fault attributable directly to the Operating System. You may want to take a look in the event manager and see if it indicates what service failed to load. How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP That being said, did you buy this PC new? I do not see how downloading a service pack can change the operating system or roll it back to an earlier version.

I was going to ask you what you did to get it going again but I will save that for now. But are we talking about 2 PCs or just one (don't count the laptop?) I can't even begin to tell you everything I sense you are doing wrong but being on the internet without any protection is asking for trouble. On line gaming and streaming without protection is over the top. I would suggest that you start protecting your machines or they will never function for any period of time. It is obvious that your machine is infected with malware. How badly is yet to be determined. I am going to give you a program to disinfect the machine as well as instructions to follow if you cannot get some of the programs off the internet. Please read this first. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/5629-malware-disinfection-limited-no-internet-access.html Once that is read please proceed with the following and get back to us. I would also suggest that you not do any surfing etc. until you get some protecion. We have a number of programs that we recommend. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/3597-free-pc-help-recommended-security-products.html You may as well wait until after you use the disinfection process to consider the choices. Your computer appears to be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. It is in your best interest to note the following: Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process. Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts. If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts. You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference. If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly. ================================================ STEP 1 Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the program. On the Main tab, check the Select All button. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. [*] When the scan is complete, click OK, and then Show Results to view the results. [*] Make sure that every entry is selected, and click Remove Selected. [*] After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK. [*] Make sure every entry has a check mark next to it and click Next. [*] A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then Finish to return to the main menu. [*] Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 4 Please visit the ESET Online Scanner, using Internet Explorer to initiate the scan. Note: If you are running Windows Vista, then you will need Administrative privileges to complete the latter part of the procedure. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select the Run As Administrator option in the shell context menu. Check mark the YES, I accept the Terms of Use box. Click the Start button. Click the Install button on the following screen. Click Start. This will will initialize and update the scanner engine. Check mark the box beside Remove found threats. Click the Scan button. This will start the scan. Please be patient while it is in progress. Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 5 Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Restore. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen and click Next. Give the restore point a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a note of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK. Click on the More Options tab. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one. This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files. Note: Please don't use it on a regular basis as this will clear all previous restore points. The feature might be very useful to revert your computer to working condition if something goes wrong. Re-enable all your security applications and please return here and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. Happy Safe Computing! http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/../images/additional-smilies/thumb.gif Close browsers before scanning Scan for tracking cookies Terminate memory threats before quarantining

Yet another "cannot connect wirelessly"!
BeeCeeBee replied to mikeywikey's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Are you talking about wifi, Mikey, or just routers in general? Leaving aside all other possible issues, the only routers that you can connect to and use the internet are either routers for which you have the proper keys and settings or unsecured wireless networks. Tell us a bit more about these routers and what you are doing to try to connect. -
This morning as I was buttoning my shirt, a button fell off. After that, I picked up my briefcase, and the handle fell off. Then I went to open the door, and the doorknob fell off. I went to get into my car, and the door handle came off in my hand. Now I'm afraid to pee.
