  1. XP Police has been know to block users from running antimalwarebytes if that should happen to you go to where you saved the file and rename it to anything else that will allow you to remember it. That should fool the xp police and allow it to load and run. Do not forget to upgrade.
  2. OK Lego but I know you are not going to like it. Just accept the fact that it is necessary. 1. Get all the downloaded games off your computer. You are going to be tempted to keep them but at least one and probably more have caused your problem. 2. Uninstall all of your torrent programs using control panel then add or remove programs. 3. If you are playing downloaded games you are using some form of program to mount them on to virtual discs. (Daemon tools, etc.) These too are often downloaded with problems attached. Since you will not be using the games you will not need software to run them. Uninstall that as well. 4. Uninstall your printer since that seems to be affected. It probably is fine but there is no point in leaving it there if something has attached itself. You can reinstall it later. Once that is all done then, and only then, should you run our malware disinfection process. Do it when you have an hour or two to put into it since it should be run all at one time. The time factor has to do with scans, so you need not be at your pc all the time. Your computer is infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. It is in your best interest to note the following: Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process. Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts. If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts. You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference. If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly. ================================================ STEP 1 Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the program. On the Main tab, check the Select All button. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. 3. So it would seem. Please run the malware removal program that I gave you. It should get you to a point where the PC is clean and then we can search for remnants of the XP police.
  4. This is the original question Lego, screenshots of your printer utility are not going to help us get to the bottom of what is wrong. Something that you have downloaded appears to have messed things up a bit. If it is p2p software (torrents) please remove the software or ask for directions for its removal. It appears that one of these games came with a bonus that you were not expecting. Getting your printer to work isn't the issue.
  5. YES!!! This is also the 2nd time for the XP Police and you clearly did not mention that before. You have picked up some malware and need to get rid of it. XP Police is a rogue that pretends to be an antivirus program, First go to your control panel and then to add and remove programs. Uninstall any reference to XP Police. Once that is done run a search for xp police an remove any remnats that you may find. I would suggest that you consider that Norton let this in in the first place when deciding on the future of antivirus protection for your PC. Once that is done reboot and see if the problem persists. If so there may be a registry change that needs correction Once you reboot please consider the following proven maware removal process. Your computer appears to be infected with Malware. 6. That is good advice from the member with far too many letters in his/her name to retype. :) One addition, should you happen to find explorer.exe in processes, end the process and then retype it as a new task.
  7. Normally MrPlumbermann I would just make a few suggestions on how to regain your desktop icons and restore your taskbar as I did here: http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/41729-post2.html You should, of course try the things listed but, even if it works it does not indicate why this has happened and, you may well have other problems that you can't see as yet. However this appears to be the 4th time this week that we have had a similar set of problems. That is a bit to coincidental and I am now going to suggest that it may be a malware problem. Can you get into safemode and see if any of the accounts listed there will allow you to either see your files or at least give you sufficient control over the computer so that we can try to disinfect it and, perhaps, avoid having to try to recover your data.
  8. I cant advise you about what a repair shop will charge. However, again, if you are intent on trying it yourself, I would make a call to a few shops and see if they would just help you remove the screw. If you are saying that the screwdriver is damaging the head of the screw then perhaps the bit you are using is too small. These things really have to fit to work.
  9. Hello Lego, You asked almost the same question on 4 February and I asked you about the games you are trying to use and what the messages are saying. You did not answer then and now have the same issues. No game that I know of EA or otherwise, requires you to print anything. Please go back to the original thread as this one will be merged with it.
  10. It will work, but just be careful Laptops are not as simple to deal with as PCs so, if you are intent on getting inside yourself, do not force anything. (Except the screw :) )
  11. Over heating can be the cause of any number of problems. There is no point trying anything until that issue is solved. If a cover is held down by screws there is very little anyone can do but tell you to remove the screw. The mistake people make is that they assume that they need a tiny screwdriver to remove a tiny screw. It is very hard to get any torque out of those little screwdrivers. Assuming it is a phillips head screw as most are, what you need is a large screwdriver that comes to a sharp point. Often a screwdriver with interchangeable bits will be available at an electronics, computer or hardware store, That should give you the added torque or leverage to remove a stubborn screw. Once done use compressed air in short bursts to clean away dust etc. Never use a nylon brush. The cans of air can be purchased at any computer store. While you are there I suggest an anti static bracelet to "ground" or "earth" yourself to avoid static electricity. If that solves the overheating problem then we can see what, if anything, is left to deal with.
  12. Clearly this is more than an external storage device therefore more information is needed before anyone can help you.
  13. Can you give us a model number please and describe how you attach it directly to a TV?
  14. Many have and that is why there is this: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool
  15. While waiting for hardware assistance you may want to try to go into safe mode (tap F8 on Startup) and see it the icons etc. are there. You should be able to access the Administrator account in safe mode. If you are able to navigate through that account, set up a new named user administrator account. Retart and boot into normal mode and see if the new account is fully functioning.
  16. Jr member is based on your tenure here, malc. Your age is not relevant. I'm not sure how you find the time to post though, Isn't Barney on now? :D
  17. Hi to you malc and welcome to fpch!!:)
  18. I would most certainly try plugging the mouse into your computer directly, yes!!
  19. For me it is F2 but it should say when you boot. The trick to looking in the bios is that even if you think you have done nothing, when you exit make sure you don't allow changes.
  20. Harty you do not seem to want to listen to advice being given to you. The 54mps has nothing at all to do with your connection speed to the net. Do you have 54 meg broadband? No. That is only an indication of the speed available between your pc and the router. The router cannot deliver data faster than it gets it. If your average connection speed to the router (the number you are using) is and remains vary low then you do have a problem but I do not see any indication of that. Very low would be consistently under your broadband speed. Remember wireless does vary with conditions and is not perfect for gaming by any means. If you want help we will be glad to provide it but you must follow the directions given or there seems little point.
  21. :D You anticipated my reply. It would be expected that the connection between the card and the router would be stronger. The issue is speed. Reread what Tootech had to say.
  22. The only real way to test your theory that it is the card is to change the proximity of the pc to the router. (or, of course, just change the card) If the speed and performance is significantly better when very close to the router then there is a good probability that you are correct. On the other hand if it is not you either have a truly defective card or the problem lies elsewhere. The distances you describe should not effect performance that drastically.
  23. I don't think that you are going to get the increase performance you expect by changing routers. Have you tried doing a speed test both wireless and on the ethernet? I have found Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test to be pretty good but even if it is not entirely accurate the difference, if any, should be evident.
  24. Welcome Pablo, glad you found your way to FPCH! :)
  25. We would need to know a lot more about this software before anyone can venture anyhting other than a guess.
