  1. Hi Jim, Happy New Year to you and your family :) That seems a good price for your m/board. Continue here - it will keep all of the relevant info together. Good luck with the re-build.
  2. Hi Just to add my two-pennyworth .... I have 2 Acer laptops. One with Vista on that I have had for years and my new one ( Win 8.1 ) I have had no problem with either. Of course - there are always exceptions :)
  3. London Fireworks last night - enjoy
  4. Happy New Year to you and your family :) http://2014-wallpapers.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/happy-new-year-2014-fire-crackers-300x210.jpg
  5. Thanks for confirming that. It is unlikely. The video card has its own on-board memory and for normal use this is usually enough. You could remove the RAM modules and try them just one at a time. It could be that one of them is faulty. If the system is still the same after this I will ask one of our moderators to see if he can offer any more advice :)
  6. Happy New Year to you and yours :)
  7. Hi, I found this - click here It suggests that creating a glossary cannot be done automatically.
  8. Hi This is from the nvidia site: The last bit .......CPU4 This was explained as being "Intel Atom CPU or better" The original Atom CPU ran at 200 Mhz and the best runs at 2.0Ghz Your 1.8Ghz CPU should be coping OK. Please confirm that you have disabled the on-board drivers when you are trying the Video Card itself. And that you un-installed any old drivers before updating to newer ones.
  9. Good to hear that you fixed it. I am sure that others will benefit from this thread too :)
  10. Hi Randy - Worth a try - I think it will still ask for a password ...... it is a long time since I played with XP :) Jez ... Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. When you get to the Startup Options try 1) Last Known Good Configuration 2) Safe Mode Let us know how you get on.
  11. You could give Dell a ring - 0844-444-4712 - and ask if they still supply a recovery disk for your system. They will ask for the Service Tag number from your machine. It is a 5 to 7 letter and number code that will be on a sticker on the back or side of your machine.
  12. My laptop is an Asus - and my mic is shown in Audio Inputs/Outputs Are you sure yours is not listed there in Device Manager ? Try this: Right click on a blank part of the desktop > Personalise > Sounds > Recording > click on your microphone > Configure > Set up Microphone If you are using an in-built microphone select "Other" Click on Next You should get an indication that your mic is working when you speak. Do you ?
  13. Are you saying that the pins are there - but there is no jumper in place to remove ? If this is the case the password will obviously be the BIOS one - which will not be set. Your only other option is to get hold of an XP Pro disk.
  14. Hi and welcome to ExTS I am not familiar with kindle fire hdx but I AM with Talk Talk !! Can you access the site using a Windows-based machine? Can you post a link to the Showbox site that you are trying to access please?
  15. Hi Annie I am sorry that you had problems registering - I assume that Randy explained in his email :) Did your microphone ever work on this machine ? Start > type in .... devmgmt.msc ..... ENTER Click the > next to Audio Inputs / Outputs Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? What is listed here for your microphone ?
  16. ?? Any specific reason? On your motherboard at the end where the video cable connects are 2 small jumper pins. One is labelled CLRCMOS The other - CLRPSWD Something like this: http://en.community.dell.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/550x0/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3514/2742.sysbd_5F00_jumpers.jpg It is this one [ CLRPSWD ] that you need to remove. 1. switch off at the wall 2. remove the jumper from the 2 pins 3.Switch on and let the machine attempt to boot. At this stage if you are asked for a password leave it blank Remember to put the jumper back again - switch off at the wall again. ============ This is unimportant but can be corrected in the BIOS later ============
  17. Looks like a bigger hard drive is needed :)
  18. Download the manual for your machine - click here Page 120. Explains how to clear passwords using the jumper on the motherboard. I am not convinced that this will do it for you as this will clear the BIOS password - but no harm done to try. ============== Your machine may have a recovery partition. ( if you are going down this route you may lose all data photos files etc that is on the drive. If you need access to these it may be possible using an enclosure or adapter ) Switch on and immediately the Dell logo comes up hold CTRL down and tap F11 quite quickly. You should get to the Recovery Options if the partition is there. According to the manual - this machine should have come with a recovery disk. I have seen just F12 alone suggested after the Dell Logo - you could try this ..... but the CTRL plus F11 method is the standard.
  19. You are tapping DEL twice ? Do you have the installation CD ? Dell usually provided these.
  20. Hi If the drivers I linked to are different - try them. Also try - Start - type in .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click on the + next to Display Adapters > right click on the Nvidia software > Properties > Driver > roll back to the previous installed driver.
  21. You have XP Pro ? If so - this should get you to the Admin login.
  22. Not sure which drivers you are using at the moment. Try the drivers from here: click here Remove the old drivers first.
  23. Can you check that F-F is set to accept cookies please ? click here This should be the case by default.
  24. Hi Gin and Tonic is not a drink for laptops .......................mine prefers single malt :) I did find this - click here Seems a bit expensive but cheaper than a new machine. I hope you intend to stick around ...... you obviously know your way around computers and we would appreciate any input that you can provide. Just jump right in :)
  25. Just to confirm - this is the same with Win 8 :)
