Do the same with a Wireless connection.

Do you actually have a network drive? An external drive ( server? ) that you access via this machine. Was this machine part of a works network at one time ? Press the Windows Key + E Are there any drive letters with a red X on the left side ? If so - right click > disconnect.

Let us know what you decide. Do a bit of research on Win 8 before you finally decide.

Use the scanner provided by Armageddon it will give you a lot of relevant informationJust for info: If you are adding 8GB I would advise 2 x 4GB rather than 1 8GB module. The reason is that if one goes wrong you can at least pull out one and run off the other. From what I can find - the motherboard will support up to 8GB DDR3 memory.

Save it to the Desktop - easier to access from there.

Not sure what you mean? It will run all the usual software - Skype - Windows Media Player - etc Flash Drives / external hard drives Webcam etc The layout is, however, totally different from Win7

It is totally different from Vista and Win7 and you may find it difficult to find your way around. (Just a thought)

Hi Not really any help to run it at your dad's house if you know it is working properly there. Please confirm that you have a connection at dad's house. Wifi at mum's house Try to run the speed test. Failing that click on the blue Wireless Test at the bottom of this post. It will produce a log. Copy this and paste it here. If you have no connection copy it to Notepad and save it to a flash drive. Transfer the drive to a computer that does have a connection then copy the log here please.

Hi again The problem with laptops is that they are so difficult to work on. Suggest that you take it to a small ( one or two man ) business and ask for an estimate for repair. If it is the motherboard that needs replacing this will cost about £150 ( sorry for the bad news ) If there is anything on the drive that needs backing up - don't forget to do it ( it is possible using a hard drive to USB adapter on another machine ) If a new m/board is needed a new Operating System will need to be installed - unless exactly the same m/board is used as a replacement. You can get a new laptop for about £300.

Right - try this: Open Notepad. Past this in: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\HME] "DisableDiscovery"=dword:00000002 Save it as wmpnscfg_disable.reg Click on the .reg that should appear on the dektop to write this into the registry.

So - we still have a problem with WMPNS. Go back to services and right click on Windows Media Player Network Service > Properties click the down arrow next to Start Type Select "Disabled" > OK This shares WMP libraries with Network Devices using plug and play. My guess is you don't use it. Try booting again.

Is there a broad grey cable in the case that is attached from the m/board to the hard drive ? The cable is flat and about 2 inch ( 50 mm ) wide.

Hi and welcome to ExTS Strangely - I had this happen to me yesterday with my old laptop. If you have access to a voltmeter - check the voltage at the jack ( connection to laptop ) This should be around 19v There should be a sticker underneath that says something like "Input 18.7v" If this is OK - remove the battery and the mains adapter. Hold the power switch in for 20 - 30 secs Try with just the mains adapter ( leave the battery out ) No go ? Take the RAM out. Leave the modules out and switch on. It will not boot but hopefully you will get something on screen. The RAM will be under a panel in the base of the machine.

Hi Check your BIOS - Boot Order ( or similar ) Make sure the order is 1. DVD CDROM 2, HDD ( Hard Disk Drive ) It doesn't matter what order the rest is. I suspect that you have something odd as a first boot device. I think - looking at your pic - if you switch on and constantly tap F2 about once per second you will get into the BIOS ( SET-UP ) Look for Boot Sequence / Boot Order or similar. Move around with the arrow keys If you need to change the order it will tell you on screen ( usually up / down arrow ) Don't forget to Save and Exit ( usually F10 )

Serial ATA supported means that SATA ( newer ) hard drive can be used. However - your system supports both SATA and the older IDE. So we still don't know what you have. Take a look at the hard drive and the leads from the motherboard. If there is a broad grey one ( 80 fine wires ) going to the hard drive it is IDE. The pic above has an IDE hard drive - broad cable ( looks yellow in the pic ) If it is IDE then the PSU that you have selected will not do as this has SATA connections.

Hi System File Scan should have repaired Explorer - if in fact Explorer is the problem. Take a look here click here Download ShellExView and install. Sort the Shell Extensions by Type - this will save you time. You are working - initially - with non-Microsoft stuff. Use method 2 I am not on my Vista machine at the moment but will d/l this to it if you have any problems.

Hi Your m/board looks like standard connections. The main power one from the PSU - does it look like this ? There may be a separate 20 + 4 pin instead of 24 http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/main24index.jpg That PSU you are thinking of getting has SATA power connections. Does the power connection to your hard drive look like this ? Your m/board has both options. ( IDE and SATA ) http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/sataindex.jpg 50Cm is about as long as you can get for the leads. That PSU has 30Amps on the 12v rail - this will run any Video Card you decide to get. I mentioned grounding[Earthing] the PSU to the case earlier. You can do this with a wire from one of the screws on the PSU to one of the screws on the Case. One thing about cheap PSUs. PSUs in general are very inefficient and cheap ones are more so. It says 500Watts but you may, over time, get considerably less. They are also prone to failure long before an expensive one. This said - if you want a cheap PSU that looks as if it will do the job :) The black socket on the board next to the aluminium cooling fins is the PCIe x 16 socket for the video card.

Connect with the cable and run the speed test below: ( let me know the results ) ........wait for "Begin Test" to appear. speed test click here Do the same with Wireless.

Hi Not done yet. Go back to the Command Prompt and type ......... chkdsk /f ......ENTER ( space after chkdsk ) This will check the integrity of the drive and attempt to fix any errors. Check the system again. Run sfc /scannow again if necessary.

Can you get to Command Prompt from Safe Mode ? Shut down > re-boot and constantly tap F8 about once per second. Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt Try sfc /scannow from here.
