  1. Hi and welcome to ExTS F8 should bring up the Advanced Boot Options - do you have an Operating System installed ? If you have just placed an old hard drive in the case with a new motherboard the system will not boot. Can you access the BIOS ? [ DEL or F2 ]
  2. Click Start > type in ...services.msc ......ENTER Scroll down .... Is the "Automatic Update" service started ? There is an option to "Start this service" if you highlight it and click on "Action" in the toolbar.
  3. You will only get POST beep(s) if there is an internal speaker connected. Take a look. If there is an internal speaker and you get no POST beeps then we can conclude that the PSU or motherboard is at fault. Is there a second VGA connection ( on-board ) ? If so - take the video card out and try this. Did you need to add thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink ? Have you checked the CPU seating ? Check the stand-offs ( under the motherboard ) These make sure that the board is insulated from the case. You could try unscrewing the m/board and sit it on a piece of card / newspaper to insulate it ( to try ) If none of the above solves the problem I think that the motherboard may be faulty as you have tried the following too:
  4. You are welcome. Happy Christmas to you too :)
  5. Hi, I merged your recent post with the original thread - they are related. This is where System File Check logs are stored. If you are getting an error message suggesting that CBS.log is corrupt it is OK to delete it. ( The CBS.log folder that is ) It will be created again next time sfc /scannow is run. No - they are not linked. Take a look here and try the FixIt click here
  6. I assume that the on-board video is not there? It must be disabled in the BIOS. If you are running off the Video Card and things are OK I would leave it as it is. Don't try to fix it if it isn't broken :)
  7. I am using Win8 at the moment. I have XP / Vista and 7 machines and this, as already stated by a few, is very different. I may go as far to say frustrating at times ( but I am over that now ). This is a new machine and came with the usual bloatware! I hate it when a machine comes pre-installed with McAfee - this even had Norton as a back-up option. One of the first things I did was to install Revo Uninstaller and get rid of them - plus other software that I didn't want or need. I then decided to download MS Essentials - my favourite AV - to discover that Win 8 already has it installed in the form of Windows Defender. Defender is not new and was always part of Vista and Win7 - but not in this form. It is, as already stated, a combination of the old Defender plus Essentials. So no need to download an AV .....it is already there. Now the frustrating part I found the search option quite quickly and needed to enable Defender as McAfee on the system meant that the inbuilt option was disabled. Fine - type in "Defender" into the search option and hit ENTER. I got a message that Defender was disabled - I knew that !! I wanted to enable it but couldn't open Defender to do so !! Quick search on line I thought ...... I found numerous options that suggested various methods - none of which worked. ( and I was online without an AV !! ) I spent a very frustrating hour or so trying to enable what should have been a simple process. Got there in the end :) The thing with Win8 is that the system is very different from the previous systems. Things that were readily available in Vista seem to be hidden in Win8 I like the look of the Operating System it will, however, take some time to find out where everything is hiding.
  8. Hi You have bought ECC RAM - [server RAM] 1GB DDR 333 CL2 5 ECC Reg PCR2700R-25331-CO Your motherboard specs suggest PC3200/2700/2100 non-ECC DDR SDRAM .................. (from the motherboard specs) click here 1. Some motherboards will allow the use of ECC in non-ECC slots and some will not. 2. Some m/boards will allow ECC and non-ECC to be mixed .......some will not 3. RAM have an operating voltage ( e.g. 1.5v / 1.65v ) if this isn't correct then the RAM will not work in the slot. Either way - you are always best advised to buy the recommended Ram at the correct voltage. Put the old 256MB back in and run the Crucial Scan from here: click here Let me know what it says. ========== With regards to "Fake RAM" ..........I do know about Virtual Memory and this is no substitute for RAM. ( not heard it called "Fake RAM" before :) )
  9. Hi, The Video Card connection will give you better graphics so the original on-board graphics are not needed. Click on Start ( bottom left corner ) then click on "Run" Type devmgmt.msc in the box. Hit ENTER
  10. Hi and welcome to ExTS One thing is confusing me ........ you say you have nothing on the monitor but you managed to install a router software and Video Drivers. ?? You have the nVidia gt210 installed with the monitor connected - graphics are good. Why do you want to use the on-board video ( I assume that the original connection is on-board ? ) It could be that the installation software has disabled the on-board option to avoid conflicts. To check: Start > type in ..... devmgmt.msc .....ENTER Click the + next to "Display Adapters" The GT210 should be listed as well as the onboard. Is there a red X next to the on-board option ? It could also be that the on-board video is disabled in the BIOS.
  11. Hi and Merry Christmas to you too :) Windows 8 is not like Vista or 7 as you are finding out :) Go to the desktop........ [ point mouse curser to top right corner > click on the Search Magnifying Glass > type in "Desktop" > Enter ] Right click on the Desktop > Personalise You will see "desktop background" in the bottom left > click on this Your "Picture Location" should be shown. Use the down arrow and change this to "Desktop Background" [ or whatever you decide ] You can select just one background image from the previous page. It is possible from here to download different images if you wish. I hope this helps :)
  12. Post back with the results - it may help others who are looking for a similar answer :)
  13. Hi and welcome to ExTS I deleted the link to the registry software as we don't recommend using any registry cleaners at all - for the reasons you are experiencing at the moment. Try this: Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. You will be taken to the Advances Startup Options. Select ... Last Known Good Configuration Let us know how you get on with this. Have you got a memory stick or external hard drive connected ? It is showing up on the screen image. If so - take this out for the time being. As this is XP it is possible [ if the above doesn't work ] to do a Repair Install of the Operating System To do this you need the full installation disk ( not recovery disks ) Do you have this ?
  14. Nothing more strange that computers :)
  15. You are welcome - let us know how you get on with the external drive :)
  16. Does this machine have on-board video ? If so - it will be disabled in the BIOS. Take a look and see if you can enable it - if you can ....remove the Video Card and run off the on-board video. If the graphics are stable then it looks like it may be a problem with the card ( if the drivers that you installed are OK ).
  17. Was that after using netsh int ip ........? Run it for a day or two and let us know the result :)
  18. There are some external drives here: click here Some for under £20 :)
  19. Post back after a few days and let us know :)
  20. There is no log with CheckDisk. Is everything back to normal now ?
  21. Powerpoint is part of the package as is Excel equivalent :)
  22. Hi Rachel This is often a problem when dirt and other crumbs get under the keys. If you buy a can of compressed air ( from any computer shop - Halfords may have one ) attach the straw-like tube and using short blasts give the keyboard a clean. This is best done outside - for obvious reasons. If it is still a problem you can attach an external keyboard as a work-around
  23. Hi and welcome to ExTS There isn't a free MS Office - but there is a free Open Office that will do all that you want. click here It is compatible with MS Office so files will be interchangeable. Just one thing to remember... In Open Office Word - the default file extension on the version I have cannot be opened in Word. You need to select a compatible file extension when saving a document if you are going to use Word to Open it. Open Office does, however, have no problems opening Word documents.
