  1. Restore points are set automatically - as long as System Restore is activated ( it is by default ) The System Restore process does not affect the data / files / photos on the drive. It will - if you can run it - revert the system settings to what they were on the chosen date.
  2. Hi This will be the tolerance - basically how accurate the capacitor is with regards to size ( 100uF could be 80 or 120uF ) Is it an electrolytic capacitor? click here and here The value is usually written on the side in uF There will be a voltage there too. What is the make and model number of the motherboard - we may be able to locate one.
  3. Hi and welcome to ExTS I have split your post from the other thread - you are better off with your own :) Can you get to Safe Mode? If so - can you select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. If you can get this far ...at the prompt type ... C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.ex Follow the on-screen instructions
  4. Try this: Go to Device Manager again > right click on the IntelĀ® PRO/100 VE Network Connection > Properties > Advanced Click on Link Speed / Duplex Mode There are various options here. Mine is set to "Auto Negotiation" Try this and try 100Mb/s Full Duplex and 100Mb/s Half Duplex. Click OK after each change. It wouldn't do any harm to try the others too. If this doesn't solve your problem put the setting back to what it was.
  5. This confirms your test result. That is very poor. We need to check it with a different ethernet cable first - can you borrow one ? Alternatively - use the ethernet cable to connect the laptop to the router. There should be a switch on the laptop to turn off wireless. Let me know the make and model number of your router please.
  6. I speak a little French but thanks for this :) 10270 = 10Mb/s Please run the speed test from here and let me have the results http://www.speedtest.net/ Be careful not to click on any "Scan Now" or "Download Now" buttons. The Speed Test will show "Begin Test".
  7. The d/l speed is usually better via cable than wireless - so swapping this is an obvious place to start. I assume that you have tried a different connection on the router ( if there is one ) ? Have you tried switching the router off for 30 seconds then back on again ?
  8. If your drive is "breaking up" check disk may not run properly as it is running from within the drive itself. An external system will be a true check.
  9. I tend to agree with Randy. Before you do anything else with this drive I would connect it up to another system and run chkdsk on it at the very least.
  10. This is true. This is also true. I was hoping that we could salvage the m/board but it seems that your diagnosis is correct. It is a motherboard no longer. If you can get the very same board as a replacement you will have no problems swapping the components over. A different board would need the Operating System re-installing. It is possible to get data off the hard drive if necessary - do you have anything that you want on the drive ?
  11. Try ping 127.0.0.1 Let me know the results ============= Let me know the make and model number of the router please. ============= When you configured the DNS - did you leave "Obtain IP Address Automatically" checked? If not - go back and set this to "Automatic" Give connecting a try again.
  12. Do you have a different ethernet cable that you can try ?
  13. Can you boot up in Safe Mode. Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. From the list select "Safe Mode" Graphics will look a little odd - if you manage to boot up. If you cannot boot up in Safe Mode without it re-booting or freezing try the following: Use the F8 procedure again. This time select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. At the prompt type ....rstrui.exe This will run System Restore. Select a date that is before the start of your trouble.
  14. What about contacting the seller - explain your problem - ask if you can return it and buy a router with modem from them ?
  15. Hi and welcome to ExTS Start > Run ...type in ......devmgmt.msc .....ENTER Click the + next to "Network Adapters" What is listed ? Are there any yellow exclamation marks ?
  16. Hi and welcome to ExTS I can't understand why router manufacturers do this. The vast majority of people who buy a router want it dual-purpose. Network computers and connect to the internet. You should be OK with that modem. The connection should look like this: http://kbserver.netgear.com/images/n101667_image01.gif
  17. Hi and welcome to ExTS This is an Open DNS This is Google DNS Not that there is anything wrong with using the above DNS - have you tried using the DNS supplied by your ISP ? Start > type in .....cmd .....in the top left of screen right click on "cmd.exe" > Run as Administrator type in .....ping 192.168.0.1 .........( space after ping) Can you ping the router ? You should get 4 packets sent and received - none lost. If you can type in .... ping 209.85.147.94 Can you ping Google.
  18. I know some people like that :) If the capacitor has sticky resin on top - chances are it has blown. It is possible to solder in a new one ( using your new-found skills :) ) but we need to ask ....what caused it to blow in the first place? This indicates ( normally ) either a PSU or Motherboard problem. The test is to take all of the cards off the m/b. ( RAM etc ) Disconnect the power connections to the drives Disconnect the data cables to the drives Disconnect all external devices Leave only the 20(4) way cable from the PSU attached. Switch on. You should get beeps. No beeps here indicates M/B or PSU.
  19. Whilst a lot of it is good advice not all is appropriate to you. All you will need is a can of compressed air and a soft brush. The link mentioned a vacuum cleaner - which is confusing. I have already said that vacuum cleaners can create static. Best not to take them too close to the inside of the case. The anti-static wrist band is only necessary if you are working a lot inside the case. You are not. Rubbing Alcohol is used to clean off greasy surfaces - not necessary for you. Give the compressed air / soft brush a go. If your case looks just about dust free when you have finished - this will be fine. All cases have some dust in because the fans draw it in.
  20. This implies that the system cannot find an OS to boot. Was this from the installation disk? Is the Win7 disk a full installation disk - not a copy ?
  21. Hi In a word - Yes :) We come across so many desktops that are overheating due to a buildup of dust. There is a cut-off temperature that will cause the machine to shut down to protect the hardware. A can of compressed air is probably best. Short bursts. It will be messy - do this outside. A soft brush can be used too. Do not be tempted to use a vacuum cleaner. It can produce static which can damage some components.
  22. I see what you mean - I looked too and found nothing with a rectangular plug. Just a thought - if the one with the rectangular plug is dead ......cut off the plug leaving a long section of the wire attached to the plug..... If there are only 2 or 3 wires it should be possible to buy one like Nev's link - cut off the round plug and solder on your rectangular one. Worth a try ?
  23. Hi Naomi You seem to have two issues which may [ or may not ] be related. You know that your machine is loaded with dust - so this MUST be sorted. Switch off at the wall - but leave the plug in to maintain the earth [ground] connection to the motherboard. Take the side panel off carefully - try not to disturb the wire. If the wire does come off - a photo would help us identify what this wire is. If you are using compressed air from a can do this in small bursts as long bursts can expel the propellant as a liquid. I also suggest that you do this outside - it can be VERY messy. Pay particular attention to the vents / fans / heatsink and don't forget to check under the motherboard if it is accessible. If you like - for the moment - you can try booting up with the side panel off.
  24. Hi Naomi and welcome to ExTS I hope we can assist with any problems that you have.
  25. You have quite a few problems here. Our security experts are going to be busy.
