  1. Without a DVD Drive there is little we can do. Options: 1. Get the drive checked by a good local tech ( NOT PC World ) to see if it has died. 2. Buy a replacement and save on the cost of checking the drive. You can obviously fit this yourself. 3. Recover data / files etc from the Hard Drive - just in case. I suggest that if you have any important stuff on the hard drive that you get it off. If we end up repairing / reinstalling you could / will lose data. We need a working DVD Drive to attempt to repair the Operating System. Where do you wish to go from here? EDIT: Thinking about it - we can run a check on the drive if you decide to recover data first.
  2. Not sure how they could do this without the product code or access to the machine ?? http://support.microsoft.com/ph/1173 This is from the Microsoft site ( link above ) Support runs out in 2014 - not 2012 I know this applies to security updates - but if they are providing those then they should also help with the Product Key. Suggest you give them a ring again.
  3. Sorry Nev - you are correct :) karltin Nev is suggesting that you try bypassing the DVD DRive and boot straight from the Hard Drive. This is worth a try.
  4. There is nothing to change in the BIOS - it is set up correctly. This may help: TAKE THE BATTERY OUT FIRST - just in case.
  5. Crossing posts again Nev :) The technical manual for your laptop is here click here Page 60 explains how to remove the DVD Drive. It would be good if you could take it out so that we can try Nev's suggestion of booting without it. It looks like just one screw holds it in place. The one you have. There is an option to boot from a USB DVD Drive that may prove useful.
  6. Hi and welcome to ExTS Thanks for the very detailed post - it certainly helps :) What doesn't help is the fact that your DVD Drive is not functioning. I think you would have had a working computer by now if it was. Switch on and tap F8 about once per second. This will take you to the Advanced Startup Options Safe mode Safe mode with networking Safe mode with COmmand prompt Last known good configuration (advanced) Satrt windows normally (this is highlighted) Click on "Last Known Good Configuration" if you haven't tried this yet.
  7. Hi and welcome to ExTS This is why Microsoft are suggesting that you buy a legal version. The XP Pro version that she has installed is obviously a cause for concern for Microsoft otherwise they would be happy to help. We cannot help you with the XP Pro product key - sorry. Do you have the original XP Home installation disk or recovery disks - again for the XP Home installation? If so we can use these. We can advise you how to get the data off the hard drive if you don't know how.
  8. Where are you based? Your time setting is set to London ( GMT ) your last post shows 1-41pm which is correct if you are in UK.
  9. Hi and welcome to ExTS I have split your post from the other thread - it was old and you are better off with your own :) The thread you refer to is here: click here I assume that your are running a 64bit operating system ?
  10. I assume that you have onboard video. It is simple to check. Take the panel off and take a look. I have drawn a box around the slot that will house the Video Card. You must make sure that any card you select is going to fit as they overhang the slot front and back. It looks as if the card would come close to the RAM Slots.
  11. Good to know that our suspicions were correct :) I get about 12 mbs at the moment - which is fine for what I do. :)
  12. I have deleted your post from the other thread. There is no need to post the same thing twice :)
  13. You never said what was listed ?? Go back to Device Manager > click the + next to "Mice & Other ...." > right click on the mouse that is listed > uninstall. Reboot the computer. Windows should detect new hardware and re-install the drivers for your mouse. =============== Is it PS2 or USB ?

  15. Were they blocking you IP Address ? Do you have to pay for this?
  16. Sorry - I missed the "wired" bit so changing the channel will have no effect. Start > type in .......devmgmt.msc .......ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters 1. What is listed ? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? The model number should be on the back or underneath the router. click here It will be something like WNR3500 If you can let me have this I may be able to find the manual for it if we need it. 3. Do you have any other computers that can connect using the router or is it just the one in the house?
  17. Thanks for the additional info - somebody else may find this useful :)
  18. Try changing the channel frequency that the router is broadcasting at. I assume that it is a router and not an old modem ? Make and model would be good :)
  19. Hi again Go to Device Manager Start > Run ....type in .....devmgmt.msc .....ENTER Click the + next to "Mice & Other Pointing Devices" 1. What is listed? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
  20. Hi, When MBAM finishes the scan ( this could take a while ) it will produce a log in Notepad. Click on EDIT ( in the toolbar ) > Save Use a memory stick ( or external hard drive ) and Save the file to that. Put the memory stick into the computer you are on now > open Notepad ( you will find this in Accessories ) Click on File > Open Locate the file that you saved and open it in Notepad on the second computer. EDIT > Select All EDIT > Copy Select the Reply option on this site > click in the white space ........ CTRL + V will copy the log here.
  21. Hi and welcome to ExTS When you press the Power Button - does it actually depress ( go in ) ? This does sound like a PSU issue. They are complex and it is not just a case of it is on or off. Are you sure your PC isn't haunted ? :) I don't suppose you have another redundant PC that you could take the PSU out of to try have you ?
  22. Hi and welcome to ExTS Not trying to avoid your question - but if there is an IT dept. at work this would be best addressed by them. Is this an option?
  23. You were correct with your first guess - it is a Peregrine Falcon
  24. Hi ATI HD5770 This has the biggest influence in the selection of the PSU. The system specs associated with this card suggest 450Watt PSU minimum. I would suggest that you should look at 500 Watt minimum. You also need to consider if you intend to upgrade the Video Card at some point. If so then consider 600W or more. It depends on the choice of Video Card.
