  1. This is what I would do - yes. Bare in mind - you have done a repair install so your AntiVirus should still be functioning. I would be inclined to get up to SP3 then do all of the Critical Updates before you start using the net properly. Then go to your AV and see if there are any updates to be had there. If you were using Microsoft Firewall just make sure this is enabled.
  2. If the Vista Operating System is still on your mum's computer then the answer is no. One disk - one installation. Also - if the disk is an OEM version of Vista ( it will say on the disk ) then this is tied to the original motherboard.
  3. Hi, I am probably not the best person to comment - especially when you are spending your hard-earned cash. A few things come to mind : 1. It looks like a good choice of Video Card. It gets a good write-up here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,2964-4.html 2. I have not come across Mushkin before. I note you are buying their RAM. With RAM it is not a good idea to buy the cheapest. ( It obviously depends on your finances ) Corsair / Crucial / Kingston are good makes - and more expensive. 3. You are buying 1 x 4GB RAM. Not a good idea in my opinion. You would be better with 2 x 2GB If one of the modules goes down - you can take it out and use the other by itself. 4. If you want to play games then more RAM is good. ( again - depends what you can afford ) The m/board supports up to 32GB ( Assuming you are using Win7 ? ) 5. What goes for RAM also applies to PSUs. ( again - finances may dictate )
  4. You Scots are not all that bad - after all ......you gave us porridge :)
  5. Hi As you have no doubt guessed - STOP errors are not easy to diagnose. Lets try looking at the Services to see if one of them is causing the problem. Start ...type in ....services....ENTER Make a note of the first 10 - 15 services and write down if they are Auto / Manual / Disabled. Double click on a service and select "Disable" from the dropdown menu > OK Do this with the 10 - 15 Shut down and re-boot in Normal mode. If you get the same problem > reset the first 10 - 15 and disable the next 10 - 15. Obviously make a note of the settings first. Continue doing this. If the system runs normally at some point you have discovered that one of the last 10 - 15 services is the problem. It is then a process of elimination. Sorry this is so long-winded but itwill either locate the problem or eliminate Services from the equation.
  6. Please be aware: If the m/b is not EXACTLY the same make and model number as the original you will almost certainly have to reinstall the Operating System. If it is XP and you have the original installation disk ( not recovery disks or OEM ) then you could do a Repair Installation. OEM installations are tied to the original motherboard.
  7. Hi, Take a look here - it should help http://www.bnl.gov/itd/webapps/pdf_help.asp
  8. Hi Sina and welcome to ExTS I have split your post from the other thread. You will be much better having one all to yourself :) Can you give us some more details of your problem please? Have you replaced the battery with a genuine replacement part ? What is the make and model number of your laptop ?
  9. Hi and welcome to ExTS If it has, and the product key you entered was an OEM key, then there may well be a problem. Also - if the installation disk has been used on another system there will be a problem. Start > type in .....slui.exe 4 ......hit ENTER Select your country Select "phone activation" Have a pen and pencil ready. If this fails then go through the process again and hold on until you get to speak to a person. OEM versions of the Operating System are tied to the original motherboard. They may not be sympathetic - but give it a try.
  10. Hi Pozzouk SP1 was introduced in 2002 SP2 was introduced in 2004 If your installation is SP1a or higher you can install SP3 directly. I doubt that you will have SP2 given your dates. If, however it is pre Service Pack or SP1 then you will need to do an intermediate upgrade of SP to SP2 ( oe SP1a ) before you upgrade to SP3. Another note: Do not surf the net before activating a firewall and Anti Virus.
  11. Hi Dave How much RAM do you have at the moment ?
  12. Hi, Click on the link below then click on any of the file names. http://service.us.panasonic.com/operman/findmanual.aspx?cat=OFF The manuals are in PDF format. Can you see them?
  13. I assume that the drive is showing in the BIOS ? If you put it back as a slave in the other system and go to Disk Management ( Start > diskmgmt.msc ) Is the drive listed as healthy? If you right click on it > Properties .....is it formatted NTFS ? From Properties > Tools > Error Checking Check both boxes and scan the drive. Results ?
  14. In my opinion - yes. That is why I did it.
  15. Hi Dave This is from Microsoft - Minimum Requirements for XP Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended) At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended) At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution It suggests 128MB RAM. Personally I would recommend 512MB minimum otherwise it will run really slowly. ( depends what you have running ) What is on the system at the moment - Win98 ?
  16. Hi Dave and welcome to Fpch We are a friendly bunch - if you have any questions just ask away :)
  17. Hi Take a look here: (Repair Install XP ) http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=23 Be aware - if your XP Disk contains SP2 you will need to update again to SP3 Also - all Critical Updates will need to be re-installed from Microsoft Updates Let us know how you get on.
  18. michaelsmith If you are quoting another person's reply from another forum it is usual to acknowledge the fact. Your reply above was written by pctech33 on 14 June You just changed Sony for HP Also - if you read this thread carefully - I suggested that it is likely to be a motherboard problem as an external monitor cannot be used from the VGA port. Replacing the inverter as you suggest, will not resolve this particular problem if it is motherboard related. We have to be careful what we suggest as a "solution". What resolved an issue in one thread will not necessarily be the solution on another.
  19. Reinstalling the Video drivers is worth a try. Remove the old drivers first from Control Panel > "Programs and Features". We will leave this thread open so that you can let us know how you get on :)
  20. Hi and welcome to ExTS Thomson TG585 manual If I read this correctly .... You have replaced your old router with the Thomsom - correct ? The router works wirelessly - correct ? You cannot use an ethernet cable - "unplugged" message - correct ? ================= Start ......type in ......devmgmt.msc .......ENTER Click the + next to "Network Adapters" What is listed? Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
  21. Hi, It does. I assumed from this that the system was booting - even if you cannot see the final result. I have just re-read this: If you are doing this again please ensure that you remove the battery and power adapter. The inverter has approx 19v on the input but significantly more than this on the output. It could give you a bit of a shock :) If you are getting nothing at all on screen from the VGA - and you cannot see a feint image it looks as if it is motherboard related.
  22. I am surprised that it booted at all. Nev has already asked - do you have the original XP installation Disk ? ( not recovery disks ) If you do - we can try a Repair Install. This will keep your files and data intact and repair the Windows XP installation.
  23. Hi and welcome to ExTS What are you trying to do? Overwrite Win7 with XP ? Dual Boot XP and Win7 ?
  24. Can you post the Blue Screen STOP error please - if it happens again. ps - I don't download posted files from forums Can you copy and paste the latest mini-dump? (it may or may not be of some use) If the AMD instructions were followed and you are getting Blue Screens I would suspect the Video Card itself. Lets see what the STOP error says. Do you have a different Video Card to try in the slot?
  25. Hi and welcome to ExTS Did you toggle to the monitor using the appropriate Fn + F key? If the inverter has gone you normally get a very feint picture that can just about be made out. It is difficult to determine if "No Picture" is due to a faulty inverter or the backlight itself.
