  1. If you look in the bottom right hand corner of the screen .... If there is an icon showing 2 monitors - you are using wireless.
  2. It is probably no consolation - but I remember having this very same problem when I had a floppy drive in my XP machine. I can't however, remember if I ever solved the problem. Without accessing the internet - try disabling your AntiVirus. Also - do you use the floppy drive? If not we could disable it. ===================== See here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en To d/l SP3 directly you need SP1a ( If you have SP1 only - you will need to d/l SP2 first ). Start > Run ....type in ...winver ......ENTER This will tell you what you have.
  3. If you only have 300 Watts I suspect that your new card will require an upgrade of the PSU to something like 600 watts ( this is best guess ). Let us know which card you are interested in and we should be able to confirm the PSU requirement.
  4. Hi, You should be able to get hold of a hard drive to usb connector: See here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/IOMAX-SATA-Adapter-Power-Drive/dp/B001A5SK56/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308917653&sr=8-1 ( there are cheaper ones about ) If your Acer is a desktop it will have a 3.5 inch hard drive. There are 2 types. If you have only had this machine for a year or so it is probably SATA ( as opposed to IDE ) Take a look here to be sure: http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=75 The adapter will allow your drive to be viewed just as you would a flash (pen ) drive.
  5. Hi, Let me be the first to welcome you to ExTS :)
  6. Hi and welcome to ExTS It depends on what you want to spend. Take a look here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card-game-performance-radeon-hd-6670,2935.html The specs for your present card are here ( for comparrison ) http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-3000/hd-3400/Pages/ati-radeon-hd-3400-specifications.aspx You don't mention what PSU you have. Depending on your choice of card you may need to upgrade the PSU too.
  7. Hi John, let me be the first to welcome you to ExTS :)
  8. I would have stuck with it a bit longer. Etavares would have been able to suggest a few things I am sure. Let us know how you get on. Good Luck.
  9. Have you done this already or Do you still have files that you need?
  10. I have not used this - but you should be able to check the option shown. http://www.mydigitallife.info/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/codec-tweak-tool.jpg
  11. Hi Matt and welcome to ExTS FreeDos is a DOS-based OS. EFI is a type of FAT-based format - suitable for FreeDos but not Win7. If you have Win7 you don't need it. I would be tempted delete the partition ( using the Win7 disk ) and format the whole disk as one partition. Install Win7. If you wish you can create a second partition later from DiskManagement. ( I am not a Win7 user and I am assuming that it is similar to Vista in this respect ).
  12. Hi, You could try System Restore to a date just prior to the start of your problem. Start > type in .....system restore.....ENTER Select a date from the list. You may need to view dates older than 5 days. Data / files etc will be fine. Do you have "Office Source Engine" listed in Services? Start > type in ......Services.......ENTER Scroll down - it is alphabetical. If so - is it set to "Automatic" ? If this doesn't do it take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958052/en-us If you are unsure - just ask.
  13. Did you try: "In the Codec Tweak Tool window, tick the check box next to [Registry] Fix non-working system sound."
  14. Hi and welcome to ExTS Take a look here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/fix-windows-no-system-sound-and-audio-problem/ Scroll down to the K-Lite Codec fix. Give that a go and let us know how you get on.
  15. Classic Nev - I laughed at the end http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/laughing/rolling.gif
  16. The old ones are the best Nev http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/laughing/rolling.gif
  17. In addition to what Wolf has said .... Your OS detail ( under your forum name ) says XP Pro. You wouldn't be able to do a Repair Install with an XP Home disk. If you have Pro on the system you need a Pro disk to do the Repair Install.
  18. Pokin' my nose in here :) With XP it is possible to do a Repair Installation. This would keep your files and data intact and address the "problem" of the new motherboard. I am a bit confused. You mention booting from the XP CD and then you say this: You do have a full retail version of XP ?
  19. Hi slumdog, Starbuck asked me to advise re. This can sometime be attributed to overheating. With a desktop I would be suggesting taking a look at the fans / dust etc. Laptops are not so easy to work on. You could try a can of compressed air and try to blow out some of the dust via the vents. Try d/l Speedfan from here: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php It will give you temperature readouts.
  20. You are welcome :) We are still here if you need further assistance.
  21. I had a look at your m/b specs and I don't think you have onboard video either. Try taking the RAM out - clean the contacts with a pencil eraser - and try them just one at a time ( in each slot ). Obviously, if it boots up on one module this is OK and the other is faulty ( assuming you just have 2 ).
  22. Hi Wolf, Nice to see you again. http://thefabempire.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/welcomeback1.gif Ken
  23. Happy Birthday Nev.
  24. I don't think the prognosis is good. I think you either have a video or screen problem. If you attach an external monitor - if the lines are still there it is a Video problem, if not, then the problem lies with the screen.
