  1. Dual Post. I replied to this here: http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/11818-What-s-the-process-of-changing-my-tower-case
  2. Hi, I am pretty sure that Dell do not use standard ATX motherboards. So - if you swapped the case you would need a new m/board too. And a repair install of XP. Dell PSUs are also ( often ) non-standard.
  3. I suspect that the only reason you want to hide your IP Address is to keep it from your neighbour. Presumably they have an unsecured network that you are taking advantage of !! I have to ask - What kind of neighbour are you? This is efectively stealing from your neighbour. You are using something that he is paying for !! If you were on my site I would ban you !
  4. Hi and welcome to ExTS It would help if you could give us a little more to go on. Which software are you refering to? What are you trying to do?
  5. I'm confused. In your first post you said that you couldn't boot up. Now you say... Is the machine booting up - and how do you know? Are you getting the Windows Chimes from your speakers?
  6. Hi, Strange - setting the value to 2 makes the selection more sensitive - I would have expected a value of approx 10 to do the trick. However ....if it worked for you :) If you have problems with the setting producing duplicates try changing them to 10. Download MoveOnBoot from here: http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2094_4-10397293&ontId=2094_4&spi=c8718ce7e6f2b859a1240c1b3cb878cb&lop=link&tag=tdw_dltext&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=11878857&mfgId=84827&merId=84827&pguid=jhXEGAoOYJIAAD10nZwAAAJY&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.cnet.com%2F3001-2094_4-10397293.html%3Fspi%3Dc8718ce7e6f2b859a1240c1b3cb878cb Install and use the Wizard. Select Delete and locate the file(s) you wish to delete. The software will attempt to remove the file on rebooting.
  7. Hi, As I understand it - having a 1000Mb/s option is only of benefit on the LAN. ( i.e. transfering data on your Local network ). Your ISP provides you with the connection speed which is usually far less than the router can support.
  8. Hi, Sorry - I missed your reply it was in the middle of 3. Don't worry about the BIOS - you are getting one beep - which is normal. Repair Install.... As long as you got nowhere with the formatting it is worth a try. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Scroll down to "Repair Install"
  9. Thanks for the feedback. As you say - somebody else will find this useful :)
  10. Have a look on the drive itself. There should be a label. This needs to be set as a Master too if it is on its own cable. If there is a jumper setting - then comply with this. If "no jumper" = Master then the setting is correct. Take the second drive out and boot only from the Primary drive. Does it boot properly now?
  11. It could be as simple as the Hard Drive has moved and is not making a proper connection. Try taking it out and re-seat it. Worth a try :)
  12. Thanks for the feedback. I am sure somebody else will find the solution useful :)
  13. Hi, 1. So - you have 3 hard drives - is this correct? 2. You have kept your original HDD with theoriginal Operating System on it - is this correct ? 3. If you remove the latest HDD - does the system boot ? 4. How are the drives set up ? Master / Slave / Cable Select ? What is the jumper set to on each drive ? Are the drives connected using individual cables ?
  14. Hi, Start > Type in .....regedit .....ENTER Click the > next to .......HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel then highlight "Desktop" In the right panel ... What number is allocated to "Drag Height" and "Drag Width" ? Mine are set to 4 ( default ). If you want to you could try - right click on Drag Height / Width > Modify Change the number.
  15. Hi, I don't think it makes too much of a difference at all. I did find this: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.adsl-filters.co.uk/microfilter1.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.adsl-filters.co.uk/tutorial.html&usg=__LO47cuv1nFqQb9VZ-KYaeRkWbUw=&h=405&w=632&sz=17&hl=en&start=17&zoom=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=zY_w62w13gKOUM:&tbnh=88&tbnw=137&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dconnecting%2Brouter%2Bto%2Ba%2Bbt%2Bextension%2Bsocket%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&ei=_azqTY_XE8Ge-waH1rHdDw It suggests that if you are using an extension socket solely for the router - you do not need a filter. I think 100m is suggested as the max between BT socket and the modem - so 10m should be fine.
  16. You chose not to answer any of my questions - fine !
  17. Hi Katie and welcome to ExTS I have posted only so that you get another email ( reminder ). I agree with Frank - get hold of an enclosure ( caddy ) and let's see if we can get at your files. Your hard drive is 2.5 inch ( desktops are 3.5 inch ) and it will either be SATA or IDE depending upon how old your machine is. Newer models tend to be SATA. The connections are different and if unsure we can advise. You need to get an enclosure specific to the hard drive.
  18. Hi and welcome to both of you :)
  19. Hi, Have you tried creating a folder on the desktop and drag the icons into it - then try deleting the folder.
  20. Hi, Try connecting the monitor to a different system and see if you get the same condition. If so - the problem lies with the monitor.
  21. Again - not a win7 user so hope this makes sense: Start ...type in ...diskmgmt.msc ....ENTER You will see the drives listed. You should be able to right click on D:\ > Format. This will wipe the entire contents of the drive. ( I am away until next weekend .....hopefully somebody will pick this up ).
  22. I am now at a loss as to what to suggest. If I can think of anything else I will add it - hopefully somebody else here can jump in and come up with another suggestion.
  23. I think I may have found your problem. Take a look in the Router software settings. Advanced > Basic > Wireless Lan I think you will find that there is a setting 802.11 b/g 802.11g supports bandwidth up to 54 Mbps and 802.11b is slower again. I don't think your router supports the speeds ( wirelessly ) that you are trying to attain. You need a router that supports 802.11n. This supports a bandwidth over 100Mbps. I think you need a router that supports 802.11n technology.
  24. Hi and welcome to ExTS I must state that I am not a Win7 user. If I read this correctly - you have C:\ and D:\ drives. D:\ is a partition on the hard drive. You have "backed up" your system files to D:\ in effect duplicating them. What did you do exactly? Was this using the Backup option from Win7 itself? There is a tutorial here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/backup-and-restore If you had backed up your system then reinstalled Win7 the backup will still exist on D:\ if that is where you put it. If you wanted to reinstall and change the backup choices then I would format D:\ first. Once you have deleted the contents of D:\ you should be able to re-set the Backup options without re-installing. Hope this is of some help - as I said - I am not a Win7 user.
  25. How did you do this? From the installation CD ? How far did you get? Any Error messages ? If you have XP you can try a Repair Install - this will keep the data on the drive .......assuming that XP is still on the drive.
