Hi Bob Using your original account ...[ use the original account from now on ] First thing to do is to back-up the registry. Start > type in ....regedit ....ENTER Click on File > Export. Make sure you put a check mark against "All" [ bottom left corner ] Name the file RegistryBackup And select Desktop as the location. Click on "Save" Can you confirm that you installed SubinACL from an earlier post please ? I think you did in post #178 ...but just to be sure .. C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools ... is this there ?

Hi Ray If you have a mouse with a scroll button ....you can hold CTRL down and use the scroll to make the text larger. Or Right click on an empty part of the Desktop > Personalize Then click on Display ( bottom left ) > Adjust Resolution > Slide it down a little then test to see if text is as you want it. There is a spell-check. When you type ...any errors are underlined in red. This disappears when you Post Reply.

Hi Bob Try this before you go on to the Registry fix below: Create a new user account with Admin Privileges. Call it Bob2 or something that identifies it. click here Once the account is created re-boot the machine and log in with this account. [ Copy and paste SP1 first ....see below ] You need to try installing SP1 using this new account. I doubt that SP1 will be showing on the new Desktop. So ....before you try the new account ... Using your original account - Right click on SP1 on the desktop > click on Copy Now go to Start > Computer > C: > Users > Public > Public Downloads Right click on the space > Paste SP1 should now be available in Public Downloads. Boot up using the new account. Go to Start > Computer > C: > Users > Public > Public Downloads and click on SP1 to try the install from here. ================================================== I have been putting this off .... but it is now the last option I can think of. It involves re-setting the Registry to default permissions. You have an image created of your hard-drive and this will be our fall-back if anything goes wrong. :) First thing to do is to back-up the registry. Start > type in ....regedit ....ENTER Click on File > Export. Make sure you put a check mark against "All" [ bottom left corner ] Name the file RegistryBackup And select Desktop as the location. Click on "Save" ==================== I will leave the rest of the instructions until you get back to me. I am posting this video for reference - - DO NOT attempt to follow the video please :)

No problem Bob :) Just wondering what CDC Serial may be linked to.
-
Hi Bob I suggested that you would need to restart the machine in my post. Just click "Yes" - restart the machine and the scan will continue. It will take a long time ..... overnight ? This is good news :)
-
Hi Bob Yep - got that link .....still no answers [ even from 2 MVPs ] I would like to go over some old ground again if you don't mind ? Run the sfc /scannow tool again please from an elevated command prompt. Start > type in ....cmd ....right click on cmd.exe that appears top left > Run as Admiistrator Run chkdsk again - again from an elevated command prompt. At the prompt type in ........ chkdsk C: /f /r This is a little different from last time. If you remember this takes a time to run through and you will be prompted to restart the machine before the check can be run. It may be best to do this over-night. Reboot and go into Safe Mode. [ tap F8 about once per second ] Now try SP1 again from the Desktop. =========== The log above shows most hardware etc as compatible. CDC Serial .... do you have a Samsung mobile that you connect to the PC ? This is the only hardware that is showing as "not compatible" but I cannot see it affecting a software installation.

Hi Bob I got your email. There were too many "images" in your reply [ the boxes etc ] to post here. The board software saw too many "images" BBCode / HTML / etc etc ... I have altered the board settings to accommodate your post :) ================================== For reason I cannot figure out Ken I posted this yesterday afternoon in FPCH it does not seem to have got there. Should Windows updates be tuned off on my new PC?
KenB replied to PEV's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Ray You may find this useful - Win 8 tips - I wrote it some time back :) Also - if you are on the Apps page ...Windows Key + D will take you back to the Desktop. Windows Key + S gives you the Search Box Windows Key + R gives you the Run Box There are other combinations ..... experiment. Windows Defender [ Win 8 ] is, in essence, Microsoft Security Essentials [ an AV ] with extras. As Randy says - this needs to be off if you are using another AV. -
Hi and welcome from me too. Just to confirm: If you are connecting to the company server all they will be able to see is your email address and your IP Address. Just as we can. They will not be able to access your machine or even know your home address. They will not know which websites you have accessed. Not from accessing their server.

HELP PLEASE CANT DOWNLOAD AVG FREE 2015 FOR ALL THE ADDS
KenB replied to PEV's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That's good to hear Ray. The problem with "free" software these days is that mirror sites tag on a whole bunch of extras that you obviously don't want. The mirror site gets paid for all the junk it can off-load onto you. It is getting more and more common - and as you say .......VERY frustrating. -
Thanks for your help Nev. Bob, We need to go back to post #184 and to the link on how to do a "Repair Install of Win 7 " You will need the disk that you said had a COPY of Win7 on. You will also need the Product Code off the Sticker on your machine. [ on no account post this Product Code here ] Go through the process as described in the link. Remember you need to boot up and have Windows running - then insert the Windows-7 disk. When you get to this option ....select Go Online to get the latest Updates. I know that I said not to do this last time ..but maybe - with luck - this method will install SP1 at this point :). Your Product Code should identify your specific version of Windows.

You are as cynical as me Nev :)

Confused about Anti Virus on my new PC
KenB replied to PEV's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Ray I can't believe that a computer tech would say that !! I have never heard anything like this - and I have been helping on forums for over 10 years. I can't see a problem with removing Avira and installing AGV. There will not be a problem. I have AVG on my Win7 machine. There is nothing wrong with AVG. Comparisons between AVs rank them differently but AVG is as good as any. It is a matter of preference. I am sure that Starbuck or one of our other Security Experts will be able to add to this - so wait for confirmation from one of the experts here :) -

Change One Letter to Make Another 5 Letter Word
KenB replied to KenB's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Let's try to keep this going ... if nothing else it will increase the post count :) Reams > Smart -
Thanks Nev - that confirms what I have just posted to Bob via email :)
-
Please confirm Bob - you have altered the Boot sequence in the BIOS and have tried the CD. That Disk is labeled as a Linux disk ...........I thought Nev favoured Windows PE ? I have posted your photo for Nev to see:
-
It will not do this unless you have altered the Boot Order in the BIOS to make the DVD Drive the first in the Boot Sequence. To get into the BIOS : switch on and tap ( alternately ) F2 / DEL keys ....... about once per second. [ one of these will give you access to Setup .....the BIOS ] Once in .... look for "Boot" or "Boot Options" or similar. You will see the Boot Order. Move around with the arrow keys. The DVD Drive should be first in the order. You can move it up to the top ..... usually with the + or - key but it will tell you on the page. Once it is at the top you need to Save and Exit ...........usually F10 [ again it will say on the screen ] If you are trying this DVD ............ DO NOT have the external drive plugged in. You do not want to start using the image that you created .......................not yet anyway ......and not if we can help it :)
-
You do this from the desktop. Click on the date ( bottom right corner of screen ) > Change Date and Time Settings If your date and time are not correct - or they change again after you correct them it is probably the CMOS battery that needs changing.

[ Solved ] Problem with .inp files
KenB replied to jimmyedwards's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
As I say ... I am sure that you will have no problems .... but at least you have the files to hand if one crops up :) -
Hi Bob You have an image on W: drive which is what we were wanting. Run Speccy and take a look at the Optical Drives. Does it list DVD -r in both the read and write lists ?
-
Yep :) Bob emailed me and said he had a problem ...... are you aware of this Nev ? Has the problem been resolved Bob ?
-
The usual methods of getting into the BIOS are F10 / F2 / DEL keys. Switch on and constantly tap the selected key about once per second. This should get you into the BIOS. Failing this - take the CMOS battery out [ or use the jumper on the motherboard if there is one ] for 30 seconds. Replace. This will reset the BIOS to defaults. Try F10 [ F2 / DEL ] again. You could ask an Elite PC Guru
-
How was this done? F10 is the usual method with this machine. If you can get into the BIOS check the Boot Order and make sure the HDD is first in the Boot Order Make sure there is no disk in the DVD Drive.
