Hi There is usually a drop off in download speed from ethernet cable to wireless. Can you confirm that when your son is using his machine - when you run a speed test on your wired machine - it drops by half on your machine. Let us have the Malwarebytes results just to rule that one out.

I am not too far away - just outside Heswall. I am now convinced that it is not the hard drive. :) Clicking Motherboard - Never heard of that before. There are no movable parts. For a click to be heard there has to be some mechanical movement .....like a relay for instance. ICs don't click. Can you isolate the sound using a wooden spoon ? Put the spoon part to your ear and use the tip of the handle as a probe. The noise should get louder the closer you get to it.

Hi Bringe, If this is the 25 character Product Key - there is no way around this other than to contact M$oft and see if they feel sympathetic. Nev has suggested previously using Mint or one of the other free OS's Some of these even resemble Windows.

If you stand right next to the router will it connect ? If you go back into the router settings and disable WPA - PSK option - will the other devices connect now ? If they do - if you use WEP instead ....are you able to connect now ? Do you have a "Connect" button on your router - if so have you tried this ?

Hi Could MAC Address Filtering be enabled in the router settings ? To check .. Open Internet Explorer ( as if you were using the internet ) In the Address Bar at the top where http:/www.******* ..... is - delete all that is there and type 192.168.0.1 ....hit ENTER Mine is 192.168.1.1 try this if 192.168.0.1 doesn't get you there. You may be asked for login details. From what I can find it is Admin ..........and Sky for the password. This may help - click here "Turn Access Control On" is what you are looking for. You need to turn this off. Each computer and device that can access your network has its own MAC Address. If Access Control is "On" they will not be able to access the network. You can turn this on for added security later and manually add the MAC address for each machine.

Hi again Is this with the hard drive taken out ? A rhythmic clicking is usually a hard drive problem ..... the drive heads cannot read the disk and are constantly hitting the stop ...hence the rhythmic clicking. Please confirm that the hard drive is out and you are still getting clicking sounds. Do you have any method of connecting your hard drive to another computer ? adapter / enclosure ? I am not convinced, at this stage, that it is a m/board problem :)

Not sure if you have tried the removal tool or not - click here [ The blue button ] Any AV is going to up the CPU % if it is running in the background. If you are removing MSE( I don't think starbuck or etavares .... our security experts ..recommend this now ) then you will need an alternative. I know they have recommended Avast and Avira in the past ( Free AVs ) Try the removal tool and let us know how you get on.

Hi John Is this what you are paying for ? 4 Mb/s PUPs ( potentially unwanted programs ) are not generally considered a problem. Try a different browser. See if you get the same problems.

best thing to do is strip the m/down as per link. There is a link at the bottom of the tutorial to "Testing a PSU" This may be useful if you have a voltmeter.

Hi and welcome to ExTS You say no POST beeps ......... Please take a look here - click here Strip the motherboard of major hardware / connections to just the main connection from the PSU. Switch on. Does the machine still make the loud noise? This sounds very much like a fan hitting a wire ............ have you checked for this ? At this point - ( m/board stripped down ) - you should get POST. If not then it could be either the PSU or m/board itself. ( This does not explain the loud noises ) Check the PSU fan too - this could be the cause. Let us know how you get on :)

Hi John At least your router is transmitting the SSID. You say that you cannot "enable it like you used to" By this - do you mean that you used to click on it and enter a Password ( Network Key ) ? Please do the following: Connect using the Ethernet cable. Then click on the Wireless Test in my signature and download the file to your Desktop. Disconnect the cable. Click on the file to run it. Click all OKs that result. The log will open in Notepad ....it may be at the bottom of your screen. Please post the results here. ================================ Then - disconnect the cable. Using wireless only ....... Start > Run > type in .....cmd ....ENTER At the command prompt type in ..... ping 127.0.0.1 ..........there is a gap after ping Then type ..... ping 192.168.1.1 ..... hit ENTER You should get 4 packets sent - 4 received - no losses in both cases ...........I assume that you will not. Do you ? ================================== Is there a wireless switch on the machine and is it "on" ?
