Hi Years of reading / researching trying to answer members' questions :) It looks from your image that the "Disabled Components" is showing in Hexadecimal. I think this is the default anyway. 0000008a = 138 The easiest way to check is to take a look in the Registry. If you are unsure about anything - just ask. As long as you don't change / delete anything you can look around no problem.

Hi Paul and welcome to ExTS Try Ray's suggestion .............try the drive on another system / other USB port. ============ Under no circumstances should you Format this drive - you will lose everything ( I assume that you are aware of this but it had to be said :) ) ============ I don't understand this bit. You say the drive doesn't show in "My Computer" but you ran a CHKDSK on it from a Command Prompt. You would need a drive letter to do this. Can you see the drive in "My Computer" as a drive letter ?

Hi Lintama Just to be on the safe side - let's backup the Registry first. take a look here - click here When you save the backup ...save it to the desktop as "Registry Copy" or something similar. Once you have the backup on your Desktop ... Start > type in .....regedit .....ENTER This gives you access to the Registry. Click the > next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ..............you will get a list appear. Scroll down and find SYSTEM .....click the > next to this. Continue in this manner through the following .. CURRENT CONTROL SET > SERVICES > TCPIP6 > ( clicking the > next to each one ) Finally click on the word PARAMETERS to highlight it ( not the > ) After you click on "PARAMETERS" take a look at the right side of the screen. You should see "Disabled Components" At the end of the line of text it will have a number in brackets........... 0x000000ff(255) If this is any number other than 0 we need to change it. If it is 0 or Disabled Components is not showing you can stop here. Click on Disabled Components to highlight it. A box will appear. Click on "Modify" The "Edit DWord" box will appear. If it is not selected ......click on "Decimal" ( the other option is Hexadecimal ) A number will show under Value Data (This will be the number shown in brackets from earlier)We need to set this to 0 then click OK Reboot your computer. Now check in Device Manager again and see if the Toredo Tunneling Device problem has been fixed. Please DO NOT make any other changes in the Registry. There is a video here that may help - it does bounce around a bit but if you watch it first then follow my instructions you should be OK.

[Solved ]Advent 8117 laptop - Internet slow
KenB replied to georgeriley139's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi George You missed a couple of my questions 1. How much RAM is in this machine ? Start > right click on Computer > Properties 2. Was it any better using the Ethernet Cable ? I assume that you are using an adapter that connects into the USB port ? I would have thought that device Manager would have listed this more specifically re: Make and Model. 3. What is the Make and Model Number of the Wireless Adapter ? 4. Do you have a disk with the drivers on for your wireless adapter ? -
Hi Lintama, "Toredo Tunneling Device" is not related to your Sound. It is connected with the Internet Network. Nev is correct when he says that the "fix" may be linked to a Registry correction. There is a relatively simple way to find out. This will require you to navigate through the Registry ( easy enough if you follow directions carefully ) and make one change. We always warn our members that the Registry is a sensitive area to be working in and errors can result in much bigger problems. If you are happy to go on with this then let us know and either Nev or I will guide you through the next stage. I must repeat that even if you correct the "Toredo Tunneling Device" error I doubt that this will solve the sound problem.

OK George - post back with the results. Also: Click on the Start Orb > type in the search box .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters 1. What is listed? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks next to any of the entries ? =============== How much RAM is in this machine ? Start > right click on Computer > Properties =============== Run a speedtest from here: [ wait for the GREEN "Begin Test" button ] http://www.speedtest.net/ I am interested in the Download Speed Do this wireless and wired - let me have the two results please. -
Hi, Please don't apologise ....we understand your anxiety. So - you are not as incompetent as you paint yourself :) This may not be your fault - it could be the forum itself re-sizing any photos posted. We have limits here too - not this small I grant you - but we do have limits. We are only trying to help. Nobody here will judge you - nobody here will be laughing at your expense. We all started knowing very little too. If you are happy to post the website we could check it out for you and maybe come up with a solution .....if there is one. You can ask as many questions as you like here - and it is all totally free. We have limitless patience too :)

Hi George, How are you connected to the Net ? Cable / Wireless...... via a router ? If it is wireless - can you try it with an Ethernet cable direct to the router ? Is this any better ? Do other machines connect to the Net OK ? -
:) thanks George.

I don't understand ??? You came here for help - and it looks as if you have panicked at the first hurdle. You say you are in your 60s. Those of us who have posted in this thread to try to help are also in our 60s :) I am not sure what is scaring you off - but if you really want to post a photo on a website then it is a relatively simple operation and Nev will guide you through it. If you are unsure of any stage - simple ask. If you are still wanting to jump ship - no hard feelings.

Hi George Can I ask you to start a new thread with this one please ? :)

They usually do :) Glad we could clear it up for you.

Hi George, The CDROM Drive needs to be taken out of the equation. If it is spinning then presumably you have tried to open it and cannot ? Ray suggested removing the drive itself. This is easy to do and is usually achieved by removing one or two screws in the base of the machine. If you are happy to try this it would, at least, eliminate the drive - especially as it is constantly spinning. Another option is to try to access the BIOS and change the Boot Order to look at the Hard Drive first. Some laptops have very limited BIOS options - some give us more to work with. To access the BIOS: ( assuming that you can see something on screen at this stage ) Switch on and constantly tap DEL / F2 alternately ( these or the usual keys that work ) Do this about once per second until you see a BIOS screen. Move around with the arrow keys. You are looking for Boot Sequence / Boot Options / Boot Order or similar. Once there check the the Hard Drive is first in the list of options. It will say on screen how to move it up if it isn't first. If you moved it then Save and Exit [ usually F10 ....again it will say on screen ] Try booting up now. This looks as if a connection has been disturbed. you don't always get Windows Chimes .....mine doesn't play it.

Hi Alan Is this of the Operating System or the Video Drivers ? The error message "This Device Cannot Start - Code 10" can be linked with the drivers or alternatively the device itself ( Video Card ) This is basically what Nev has already said. The yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager indicates that there is a problem with the device. Often this is a driver issue - but not 100% of the time. Try this: [ ONLY if the "Clean Install" you mention was drivers and NOT the Operating System - there will be nothing to gain if it was the O/S ] Try System Restore. Start > Run > type in ....msconfig .....hit ENTER Click on "Launch system restore" Select a date just before the start of your problems. Your files / photos etc will be fine. If you need to try something else: Take the Video Card out > clean the contacts with a pencil eraser > replace. Try it now. Restart the system > constantly tap F8 about once per second You will be taken the the Advanced Startup Options. Click on "Last Known Good Configuration" ..... it will now boot up. If still the same - use the same procedure and select "Safe Mode" It will boot from here. Do you still get the same distortions in Safe Mode ? [ no need for photos :) ] Do you have the updated drivers for the 8800 GTX saved onto the system ? If so ... Un-install the drivers from Device Manager and re-install them using the updated ones.

Hi Bringe CheckDisk is not a particularly good way of finding out if your hard disk has problems. The report is hidden and often difficult to interpret. It could be that your hard drive is failing. If this is the case then it is pointless using the Recovery Disks as you will only end up with the same problem. I suggest that you run a diagnostic check on the drive. Download Seatools for Windows from here: [ on to the working machine ...obviously :) ] click here Connect the drive up to the other machine as you did before. Make a note of the drive letter attached to the problem drive. [ This will be something like E: - C: is the main partition of the working computer ] Run a check on the problem drive. This will take some time so allow for this. Any "fails" the drive will need replacing. Please start another thread if the question is un-related.

Hi again George, Just noticed you are from Sheffield. I used to go to EIS ( down the road from Don Valley Stadium ) regularly. I am an international standard timekeeper for athletics - don't do much these days. -

Hi George and welcome to ExTS -
Hi and welcome to ExTS Transferring photos and music can be done as your daughter suggests. The flash drive may, depending upon its size, get full when copying the music across. All she would need to do in this case is copy it in stages. Once a full flash drive contents has been copied to the new machine simply delete the flash drive content and copy some more. She could create a new file(s) on the Win8 desktop so that it is easy to locate and transfer the photos / music to them. If you need further help just ask :)

Hi Steve I have done a bit of reading and apparently Sandy Bridge architecture specifies this configuration re: RAM slots. Other m/boards may adopt this arrangement too. I don't think your Asrock is Sandy Bridge though - either way you have it sorted :)
-
Thanks for the feedback Steve - good to hear you managed to fix it. The usual rule of thumb is use the slot nearest to the CPU and its partner if only using one pair. Was this the case? All m/boards are different :)

Hi GRANDAD Nev has given you some useful information to be getting on with. Just one or two points in addition: Nev has said to try your install disk if the two systems are the same. If they are both Win 7 Home ( for instance ) and your friend's is an OEM version ( installed by HP ) and yours is a full version ....this may not work. It is worth a try as Nev has suggested. There is another option which Nev has mentioned - and this is an ISO (legal downloaded version) of Win 7. I outlined how to do this here: click here This all depends on having the CDROM Drive working.

Hi and welcome to ExTS Spinning noises are normal - a clicking drive however, is a cause for concern. I suspect that your hard drive is failing. It sounds as if it may be in the early stages - but there is no time frame that a failing drive follows ..... Whilst you can - boot up ...... save all of your files / photos / email contacts etc to an external drive or DVD(s) We can run some tests on the drive after you have done this. Do you have an installation CD / Recovery CDs for your operating system ?

Hi Bringe As DSTM isn't on line at the moment I will answer your questions on his behalf. No - not quite. 3.5 inch enclosures come with an external power adapter that plugs into the mains. With luck - yes you should.
