1. Sorry Nev - not come across this one before. Wireless can be prone to interference ......just a thought. What speeds do you get at the moment ? What do they suggest that you will be getting ?
2. Your router could be playing up. They do not last for ever. Have you tried connecting directly to the router with an ethernet cable ?
3. Hi Louise ..... I got a PM from Louise1 ...was that you ?? Send me a PM with your complete 11 digit phone number [ not mobile ] ( I promise not to phone you :) ) I have a sister who works for BT. She will be able to check your line to see if it is a BT problem. If it isn't ...we can take it from there. I am not around tomorrow [ Wednesday ] Don't make any changes to your system until we can check this out. Ask your neighbours and see if their internet connection is playing up .....if it is then it looks like a BT problem. If you have a neighbour with AOL even better.
4. Hi sooty, I would only be guessing .. There is a Debian forum here that may be able to help you better than we can. http://forums.debian.net/index.php?sid=3e630860742e5c621c97e9abfde3a42c Try there first - if you get nowhere come back and I will send a message to one of our moderators who may be able to help. Let us know how you get on.
5. Hi James ...just post in a new thread when you are ready :)
6. Hi James Good to hear that you have a working system now - and the way you want it :) If it helps ..... Crucial have scanning software that will tell you exactly what RAM will be suitable for your machine. ( no need to buy from them - although their RAM is good ) click here
7. Hi sooty and welcome to ExTS I know very little about the operating systems that you are using and one of our other moderators may be able to offer you better advice. Your 2 Operating Systems should be on different partitions. ( If it was Windows we were dealing with I would be able to explain in detail ... ) You should be able to check this. If this is the case - then the partition with Mint on it could be formatted and the new OS installed there. Be aware - if you format a partition you will lose everything that is on that particular partition. In Windows the Primary Partition is invariably C: - this is where the main OS is installed. Not sure if this is the same for you. Does this help at all ? - or do you need further advice ?
8. hi James 1TB is a huge drive. If it were me - I would be inclined to create a second 500GB partition and use this to store photos / videos etc. I have had a quick scan through the thread and I am unsure as to the Operating System you have cloned ....is it Vista ? Have you installed an Anti-Virus? Was there one on the original system ? If not - you should. Avast or Avira are two good ones - pick one and only have one AV on your system. If you are not happy with 2 partitions then you will need to re-image using the Macrium method to allow the larger partition.
9. Hi James Do you have an option to connect the 1TB drive to another system ? If so - you could partition it there into 2 x 500GB partitions C: and D: or Let Macrium partition the drive and instead of expanding the partition - leave it as it is for the time being. Install the drive. Boot up - if this is OK then we can create a second partition on the rest of the drive to use for storage etc. Either way - it looks as if you are going to have to settle for 2 or more partitions.
10. Hi Slumdog To get rid of the Administrator login account try the following: Start ....type in ....cmd ....right click on ...cmd.exe ... that appears top left. Click on "Run as Administrator" At the prompt ( black background ) type ..... net user Administrator active:no ..... hit ENTER [ there is a colon before "no" ] See if this hides it for you.
11. This is the wordpress site I am working on .... http://b.wordpress.com/
12. Hi Louise I have split your post ( and Ray's ) from that other thread ...it was 4 or 5 years old and you are better off with your own. I can advise on "wordpress" as I have recently set one up ...actually in the process of setting it up :) I can post you a link to it if you like so that you can see what I have done and if something like is suitable for your needs. The problem with free hosting and websites is that you are limited to what you can actually do. But for getting started they are great. Wordpress has good help and tutorials. Also - if you want to start over you can delete the site and start again.
13. Hi Dan Take a look here - click here Click the red down arrow for price range.
14. Hi Dan and welcome to ExTS I am not a gamer so any advice may well need verifying by one or other of our members who is. Your RAM is fine. CPU is reasonable. Video Card is debatable. The system specs for arma 3 are here: http://www.arma3.com/buy#requirements I would recommend looking at upgrading the Video Card if you can. The card you have is only OK for the lower settings. Make sure that you have about 20GB free hard disk space.
15. Hi joddle, If it was an upgrade from Vista to Win 7 it is unlikely to be OEM ( original equipment manufacturer ) However, if you are using a new hard drive it would be worth a try first. Start > Right click "Computer" > Properties. It should mention "OEM" here if it is.
16. There is a free alternative .......click here
17. Hi Ian What you outline is correct - you can do as you say and format the old hard disk. You may have an option regarding the file type. FAT32 / NTFS Either would do the job - I generally use NTFS ....it has a few more security features. I would suggest that once you have done this - you partition the drive into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then use one of the partitions for storing images of your computers. The second partition could be for photos / videos The third could be used for general backups / storage. We can explain further if necessary.
18. Thanks Ray - good one
19. In addition to what Nev has already said .... I have just set up a totally free website for a band of musicians using "wordpress" http://wordpress.com/website/?source=googleUK&campaign=hsb&currency=pound&gclid=CL2-5Pfkgr4CFUoJwwodyE4A1Q Wordpress is simple to use and you an change the skin ( look ) of the site even after you have set it up. There are lots of free skins to get you started. The "problem" with any free site is the URL that you have to use to access the site. www.this-is-my-site.wordpress.com ( example ) is what it will be ......which is a bit long-winded. You can buy a .com / .co.uk / .org to use but I wanted totally free so stuck with the extended URL. You can try building your site - if you don't like it there is an option to delete.
20. Hi Ray SATA drives don't utilise a "master" or "slave" configuration this is why it has not been mentioned :)
21. The fact that Microsoft have withdrawn support for XP does not mean that an XP system is useless. The providers of free Anti-virus have extended their support for at least 2 years. [ with the exception of Security Essentials ] OK - you will not get critical updates from MS and your system will be increasingly more vulnerable - but if you are careful which sites you visit, keep your AV up-to-date and Have Malwarebytes on your system plus a firewall .........you should be OK ...at least for a couple of years. If this is your main computer then you may want to consider an upgrade. It really depends on what you can afford. :)
22. Hi yockie Windows is not the best method of updating drivers. Take a look here: - click here Use the auto- updater to check. I think the problem lies with going from XP to Win8.1 The drivers may not be available for some hardware. have you tried connecting to the router directly with a cable ? There is another option: You could try a USB WiFi Adapter ...they are relatively cheap. You may need to ensure that the device comes with a driver CD.
23. Hi and welcome to ExTS Do you get an error message ? I suspect that you may need to take ownership of the files / folders. Take a look at this link ..... it is by far the easiest way to do this - click here Once installed all you do is right click on the file / folder and click on the "Take Ownership" option. Hopefully you should then be able to open the file.
24. To add to what Randy has written .... The "Authenticity Code" = Product Code is actually held within the BIOS and is not to be found on a sticker on the side of the machine. It is possible to copy the OS ..... this can either be an image .......or a clone of the drive. This link explains about making a cloned hard drive - click here I can't see how this is possible. Please do the following .... Windows Key + Q .......type in .......disk management ..... click on the box that appears below You are now in disk management. Disk 0 is your hard drive. What is listed there ? C: is the main partition ...... what other drive letters are listed ? No this is not possible. It is possible upgrade from Win 8 to 8.1 but not to download the complete OS and save to disk. As already explained ...the Product Code is held within the BIOS. If you did need to reinstall it would be read directly from there. If you want to clone the drive ( recommended ) you need another hard drive to do this. It is a direct copy of the installed hard drive and if there was ever a problem it is simply a case of popping the clone in and booting up to give you a working computer again. 25. SAFE MODE - update tismehi ....try the following Go to an elevated command prompt ( Run as Administrator ) At the prompt type the following ... Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes .....[ there are gaps ] .....hit ENTER Then Press the Windows Key + R ....type in .....msconfig .....hit ENTER Click on Boot There is a TimeOut box .............if this is set to 0 make it 5 or 10 .......this is seconds to wait before continuing to boot. Restart. Your boot sequence should hang on a screen ...... if you press F8 at this point you should be given the option of Safe Mode ...plus other options. I hope this sorts safe Mode .....finally :)
