Problem with new motherboard Asus A88XM
KenB replied to Jim95's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Jim and welcome to ExTS Please don't mix up font sizes and styles it is really awkward to read :) In addition to Nev's suggestion: Try running on just one RAM module. If you get the same problem - swap them over. This is an outside chance - but worth a try. Run a speed test using this link. click here Let us know the results. I assume that you have no AV on your system at the moment ? -
Hi Bringe From your photo I cannot tell if this is a desktop or laptop. So ... Hard drives in Desktop machines are 3.5 inches Hard drives in laptops are 2.5 inches. If you are getting an enclosure ( caddy ) then you need to get the right size and also one for SATA drives. There are some examples here: click here There is no need to pay expensive. It just needs to do the job. 3.5 inch enclosures tend to be more expensive. Don't let SATA II and SATA III confuse you. Both will work on any hard drive / system. SATA III is faster as long as the hard drive / system you connect it to is compatible. If not it will just run slower. When you have the problem drive in the enclosure and connected you access it just as you would a memory stick. If you CAN access the drive we are in luck. You can transfer files / photos etc. From here it is possible to run some tests on the drive from the good machine. Let us know when you are at this stage.

Was your system showing as XP in your profile or am I losing the plot ?? I assume that you have not tried ipconfig /release etc ? For Win 8: Get to the Search Box ( point curser to top right corner of screen ) Type in .....command prompt ....... right click on the Command Prompt box that will show underneath Click on "Run as Administrator" At the command prompt type in ......ipconfig /release .....[ space before / ] ......then hit ENTER Then type in .......ipconfig /renew ....ENTER Try the site again. Have you managed to install F-F ? If so ..... Do you get the same results with F-F and IE ?

Hi I have just used ebay and ordered an item - so there is nothing wrong with the site itself. I would have suggested clearing Cookies ( suspecting a corrupt cookie ) but you have done this. Try this: ( assuming XP ) Start > Run > type in ......cmd ..... hit ENTER At the prompt type ..... ipconfig /release .......hit ENTER .....[ there is a space before / ] Then type ...................ipconfig /renew Try the site again.

You are welcome - this thread will be left open just in case. Happy to hear that the system is running better. :)
-
Hi At least you now know that your hard disk is in good condition :) After running chkdsk .........is the system any better ? If not - try taking one of the RAM modules out and run on the other ( assuming 2 modules ) The RAM will be located under a panel in the base of the machine. ( The system will run a little slower ....but not much ) If no better swap the RAM modules over and try running on the other one.

Hi This could be linked to a failing hard drive / bad sectors and the fact that you say the system is unstable bears this out - enough to check out the hard drive anyway :) Please do the following: Open the Search option ( top right corner of screen ) and type in ....command prompt .... Then right click on the Command Prompt box that appears underneath and click on "Run as Administrator" At the command prompt type ........ chkdsk /r .......ENTER [ there is a space before /r ] This will run a check on the hard disk and attempt to repair any errors it finds in the sectors and readable data. =============== Then download Seatools for Windows from here click here Run this on the drive. Any fails and the drive is faulty. There is a User Guide bottom right of the same download page.

Installing Windows 7 (Solved)
KenB replied to Woodworker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi David Strangely I get this problem with my own Acer Aspire V3-571 I originally thought that it may be my router and tried a different one that I have - same result. I have had this problem since the laptop was new - it is way beyond the warranty period now. I originally had Win 8 and upgrading to 8.1 has made no difference. I came to the conclusion a while back that it was a faulty Wireless Network Adapter. [ Nev has indicated his thoughts on this in his last post ] If yours is the same you could try a USB WiFi Adapter. They are relatively inexpensive. [ I have not read through the thread so if you have tried this already ...apologies :) ) -
How do I fix error 0x80004005?
KenB replied to mhansomme's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I can't see the O/P coming back to this one. Just for clarity to others reading this thread: To run System File Checker ..... Start > type in ....cmd .... then top left of screen right click on cmd.exe .....click on Run as Administrator This will take you to a command prompt. At the prompt type ......sfc /scannow ......ENTER [ there is a space after sfc ] This will run a check on the System Files. You can do this a second time if the error is not corrected as sometimes it will pick up things on the second run that were missed. You may need the original installation disk to correct some errors - you will be prompted for this. -
How do I fix error 0x80004005?
KenB replied to mhansomme's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to ExTS You say that this started when you installed AVG. Have you tried disabling / removing AVG then try re-naming the files ? I would disconnect from the internet when you do this just to be sure. error 0x80004005.could be due to system file errors and we can check this after you try the above, -
Good to hear that your problem is solved Steve - I did write to a moderator here asking for assistance for you but got nothing back ....sorry.

[Solved] Network Connection Problem...
KenB replied to Woodworker's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi David Give Classic Shell a try - it gives you some of Win7 look and feel back. http://www.classicshell.net/ It was free last time a checked. -
I can echo that too - It is also my grandson's birthday ........he was one today :)
-
As Starbuck has responded to your other post I will close this thread. Please only post one question - we will find it :)
-
Hi Rusty Knight This is a long-running thread started by Quirkie. As DSTM suggests - you will get more response if you start a fresh thread :) [ also it is confusing to have 2 members wanting advice in the same thread ]

If it helps - the motherboard is a WinFast K85755M :) ( just call me Hawkeyes )
-
I have deleted the links as others may decide to give it a try :)
-
I assume that you have not phoned ?? ( Don't - they will probably want to sell you something :) )
-
Hi Andy Just to confirm what Nev has said .. This device does suggest "plug and play" so it should just be a case of re-connecting and Windows should find it. Let us know how it goes :)
-
Do you have a link to SP3 or do you need one posting ?
-
That's good news Andy. Which service pack does it have ? Start > right click on My Computer > Properties. XP should have SP3
-
You can't do any harm Andy - I think, if it hangs again, that it is SATA drivers and Nev will explain how to sort this out. :)
