The end of the hard drive (HDD)?
KenB replied to Plastic Nev's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Interesting article Nev. I suspect it will be a few years before prices come down far enough to be affordable by Joe Public :) -
Hi Ray I will ask Gene to take a look and advise further. Hang on.
-
Keep us posted on this one Ray. Mailwasher is a nice piece of software.
-
You are very welcome :) We will try to assist with any other problems that you have.
-
I use Mailwasher ( free ) on one of my other machines. It allows you to view the mail whilst it is still on the server. From there you can mark it as SPAM / etc and delete it if necessary. This way SPAM doesn't get onto your system.

It is not that simple I am afraid. Installing Win8 would have formatted your hard drive - effectively wiping it clean. There are a couple of pieces of software that you could try to access the "deleted" files. Try EaseUs first - click here Try the FREE one. It will only let you recover 2GB of data free - so be selective. If this can access it - it may be possible to use another "free" option to get at some more. +++++++++++ You would be best advised to take the hard drive out of this machine and connect it to another one using an enclosure or adapter. Install EaseUs on the other machine. Make a note of which drive letter is allocated to the problem drive. Scan the drive with EaseUs +++++++++++ Any questions just ask :) Remember - do not save anything to the problem hard drive as it will overwrite the files you want to access.
-
I have an old Vista machine that I have to do the same with :)
-
This needs further explanation please. Were Win7 and Win8 on the same drive - different partitions ? Or - did you simply use the wrong installation disk ? Do you have Win 8 on your system now ? ( If this is the rescue disk from another system and you have Win8 on 2 systems using the same product key M$ do not take kindly to this :( ) DO NOT save anything to the problem machine as this may make recovery of any files even more difficult. Use it as little as possible.
-
Let us know how you get on :)
-
A little more detail may have helped :) You say that the USB Ports are no working. Have you tried different devices in them ? If so - which devices ? Do these devices work on another system ? Start > type in ....devmgmt.msc .....hit ENTER Click the > next to USB Serial Bus Controllers Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
-
Good to hear that you got your files back - even if you did have to pay EaseUs ...... if the files were important then the relatively small cost is worth it. Good question :) Seatools passed the drive - but you cannot format it. Is this still the case ?

Problem with dell Inspiron 660s
KenB replied to UKGirl71's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi UKGirl71 and welcome to ExTS Just a minor point ... You say yet you have "Very Experienced" as your PC Experience. You may wish to alter this as it could result, at some stage, in a reply that assumes greater knowledge. I am hoping that your keyboard is actually functioning so that you can follow Nev's advice. If there are problems at this stage could you let us know which connection your keyboard uses ( USB / PS2 ) ? The PS2 is a round plug and the USB is the usual rectangular one that plugs into a USB port. -
I thought that may be the case DSTM. I think you will need to be selective about the files that you recover as you may well be looking at many files that you do not need or want. You could create a folder on your desktop and dump the files into that. Check on how much free space there is on the computer hard drive. Start > Computer > right click on C: > Properties It will tell you here. If you have an external hard drive that has a lot of free space on it you can use this too. Is EaseUs going to let you recover the files without charge ?
-
Hi EaseUs have data recovery software that should let you get at the files on a RAW drive. click here The "free" trial may not be totally free. Hopefully it will be free to use for 30 days. If it isn't and you can see the files but not recover without payment we can look around for other software if you wish. Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

Hi, To some extent they do. Basically there are 2 speeds for disk drives ( in revs per minute ) The slower ones run at 5400 r/m and the faster ones run at 7200 r/m If you are getting a hard drive then opt for the 7200 r/m All 2.5 inch drives of the same type will be compatible. There are two variables regarding connections. The newer drives are SATA and the older ones are IDE. If you are unsure check here - click here There are various manufacturers: Western Digital ; Samsung ; Seagate ; Toshiba ; Hitachi ; Fujitsu Any of the above would be OK - they all have good reputations. The size of the hard drives is a variable too. ( not physical - storage size ) You will need at least the same, if not larger, capacity as the one you have at the moment. 320 or 500 GB would be more than ample - unless you store lots of videos etc This disk is fine for re-installing. You will need the 25 character Product Code off the sticker on the base of the machine too. Just a further note: If you do re-install then obviously you will need to re-install any programs / software that you need. It is not possible to transfer these from the failing drive ( or even a good drive ) - you need the installation disks or will need to download the software again.

Most people use a key .......... :) You simply CANNOT mention Wankel engines to 15 year old boys without them howling with laughter. I didn't realise they knew so much about engineering !! That looks rather low seating .....I would end up rolling on the floor getting out ...........even without a drink :) Nice car Pete - enjoy :)
-
Yes if this is what you are using :) Where do you wish to go from here ? In post 3 you mention an Operating System disk. What exactly does this have written on it? You referred to these codes earlier. Normally there is an added line of explanation ........ Interrupt request - IRQ - didnt set on time ............or similar. Either way - this indicates a failing drive.

I don't read any animosity in this thread. I can reiterate what Randy has said in his recent posts. Your hard drive has a problem - that has been established. You also state ( post #32 ) that you cannot backup the system .........so Randy was simply stating the obvious. If you did manage to create an image of the disk .....as Randy rightly says ....if you create an image now all you would be doing is creating an image with the same problems that you are having at the moment. We can point you in the direction of creating an image if you wish to do this to try it. A restore point is not a complete copy of the Operating System. It is simply a copy of the registry settings at a specific time. Last Known Good Configuration is also linked with Registry settings. It is useful if, for instance, a driver has been corrupted or if new hardware conflicts with existing hardware. Neither will re-install a complete operating system. I read that you have the Vista installation disk. If this is the case then as Randy rightly points out - you can use this to reinstall Vista onto a new hard drive. If you have partial use of the operating system I would make sure that there is nothing on the drive that you need. One of the things that people forget to backup is email addresses. I know that it is frustrating and you simply want your system up and running again. All we can do is express an opinion based on the facts as we see them.

Hi and welcome to ExTS :) You seem to be in a "catch 22" situation. To enter the BIOS you need to be able to see details on screen - and you don't have one......well not one that kicks in early enough. Is there anything on the hard disk that you need ? I am thinking .... If you put the hard disk in another laptop ....preferably a similar make and model number ....and install the new version of Windows there. If you transfer the hard disk back again there is a chance that it will boot up - a slim chance ......but a chance. Windows 7 is more accommodating than older OS's when doing this. May I ask why you need to re-install Win7 on a machine that has Win7 on it already ? Fn + F4 toggles between screen and monitor from within Windows so this will not solve your problem ......as you have discovered. There may be an option to select the monitor as the default from within the BIOS - but obviously you cannot see this :(
-
I am sorry to read that you are still having problems. Hopefully DSTM's link will get you access to some ( hopefully all ) of your files.
-
Hi portoman and welcome to ExTS Just interested .....did DSTM's link work for 2010 ?
