Dear Community, I downloaded Windows 8 on the advice of an engineer who said it would make my PC work more efficiently. It seems to have deleted all my files and folders from my documents and my favourites area, I can't find anything. I paid £24.99 for the download and would like to get my money back. Hi folks, What can you tell me about Browse2save.com? My poor unsuspecting ASUS got infected by this, during a download and I found it in uninstall software under the name of YOTOOL DLL. I looked it up and found out some info on what it is and what it is about, and to add this, the name varies depending on what sons of b****** would want to hack your PC. I started to appear on whatever page that had text and appeared as highlighted in a different color and had a coupon of all sorts linked to it. I followed the instruction on how to remove it all from installing the software that is was hooked on to removing cash and cookies in IE and firefox as well as resetting them both browsers. What more is there to it and why didn't Defender discover this.. is it harmful, as in, taking of identity and such?? Merry Merry to all View this thread

When I tired to put Microsoft Essentials on my new windows 8 computer it told me that I had web defender and didn['t need to install Microsoft Essentials Security. My new computer came with a free 5 months virus portection software called Kaspasky. Should I install this software also. View this thread

While doing searches ie google... yahoo or any other search engine , I find an untold amount of old useless, information that is not needed, outdated, and completely useless. For example lists of addresses for stores that no longer exist. It would seem to me that all this needless information is taking up much space that could be detrimental to the World Wide Web .... ran windows update for new updates but it search-loops endlessly. ran the fix it for this problem several times with tries at updating in between each fix it run. update not fixed and still loops. I am under XPSP3 ON A Dell D620. View this thread

I have been having update problems that everyone seems to be talking about here. My 3 months old Lenovo (H330) Desktop which I upgraded to W8 a couple of month ago is sometimes spending hours to configure updates and then reverts back to the old configuration. Looking at the updates that the update manager's list of uninstalled updates,I believe the problem ones are the usual suspects that were mentioned here before: KB2753842, KB2756872, KB2770917, KB2779768. And before anyone mentions it as a possible source of problems, I have no anti-virus programs installed and I have tried the automatic repair program which gave me the good news but did not deliver. What makes my situation worse than usual is the file explorer crashes that started after this problem with the updates started. That program opens up fine and it is good for clicking on the files that show up. The problem is whenever I try to click on the Computer icon on the left, the file explorer crashes; every other program is back on after 1-2 seconds but the file explorer is gone. Now I do not want to reset my computer, as it is likely that I will run into the same problem anyway and I do not want to go back to W7. I would appreciate if anyone knows a way to fix the updates but I can live without some updates (I guess). However I would really very much like to have a fully functional file explorer. Does anyone know a way to fix a component of the W8 without having to go through a full reset or installation? View this thread

I've tried everything to install the captioned updates, including all the suggestions found on the forums. I've disabled my virus scanner. I've updated video drivers. I've disabled all the non-essential services and startup ****. I've tried safe mode (a couple flavors of it) I've tried the built in troubleshooter with admin rights, and it claims to fix corruption, but doesn't actually change any symptoms. I've made sure that it tried to re-download the files many times. I've tried to manually download the update and install it. I've probably tried other stuff etc etc. Windows update reports 0x80073718, which under the covers seems to imply that one of the files referred to in the patch doesn't exist, or something like that. I did notice one oddity, which is that HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionComponent Based ServicingVersion is pointing to %SystemRoot%winsxsamd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.2.9200.16455_none_624a7aa150f57306, but I have an intel chip not an AMD. Don't know if that's related. I don't want to ignore this for two reasons: 1) at least two are security related. 2) It asks me to reboot my PC every two days to try and fail to install this. I have just completed a (stressful) reinstall of the above version of Windows and cannot complete the following 14 updates due to this error. OS updates KB2719857 KB2750841 KB2732487 KB2729094 OS Security updates KB2729452 KB2658846 KB2719985 KB2676562 KB2604115 KB2685939 KB2621440 KB2660649 Browser security updates KB2761465 All concurrent updates for MS Office work seamlessly. Around 70 other updates also installed seamlessly prior to this. I am concerned about the number of security updates I cannot install due to these two errors. I am presently downloading the System Update Readiness tool indicated at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 for treatment of error 80070490. I am more concerned about 8E5E03FE however as this seems to be a rarer error. Any guidance on this error first and foremost would be welcome. View this thread

McAfee is installed and windows firewall and defender are both turned off. I tried control panel/windows defender but this confirms that defender is off and there is no option to make changes. I keep seeing messages from mcAfee telling me that the trial period is over and I must pay to use their software, but I prefer to use defender because reports about its performance are good and it is a free package View this thread

I tried to load McAfee 8.8. It disengaged Window Defender. Turns out McAfee not compatible so I tried to turn Defender back on but it says it is turned off and never gives me any opportunity to turn it on. View this thread

On my new Windows 7 laptop, MSE does not run when I have it scheduled. Also, is it possible to have it run when the computer is sleeping? I would actually be happy only to get it run when scheduled and computer is on and in use, so let[s try for that. View this thread
