I am having problems with my windows 8 users accidentally turning on the magnifier (accessibility options). The manager is getting a little peeved because it is disrupting the traders and causes them to have to divert their attention to fixing the problems in lieu of managing the floor. I assume that there is a registrty entry for it but I am unable to find it. Thank you View the full article

Hi, I upgraded my PC from Windows 7 to 8 and it was running fine until a few weeks ago. It had a problem closing down one day and ran scandisk the next time it booted. Everything seemed fine initially, but now, everytime it is left for a short while, the PC will blue screen and then reboot itself. Checking the event log, I can see the following error: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000051 (0x0000000000000001, 0xfffff8a000bdb010, 0x00000000999ea3a1, 0x00000000000001c0). A dump was saved in: C:WINDOWSMEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 020813-24703-01. From the research I've done I believe this is an error with the registry. I've run Memtest86 as I thought the memory might be faulty, but the memory in the PC seems fine. I've tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier point in time, but it fails every time, after running for a good 10-15 minutes. I've worked on PCs for almost 20 years but am completely stumped here and as I use the PC for music production, I really don't want to have to reinstall, as it will take days to reinstall all of my applications and data. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could scan/repair the registry? I've uploaded the latest minidump file to Skydrive, if anyone is able to take a look at it. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=E6ED803B55B49D6C!107&authkey=!AFljXsfb25IH5ec Thanks for any assistance you can offer! Is there anyone out there who can tell me where I can download a "video decoder" for XP free of charge. I find it odd that Microsoft doesn"t offer it. Thankyou, Dan...*** Email address is removed for privacy *** View this thread -
I have just moved from Windows XP to Windows 7. There is functionality that I had in XP that I would like to retain. Here are the details. My preferred view of all folders is "Details". I almost always want that. The exception is that for folders with images and only for folders with images I frequently want to **temporarily** shift to "thumbnail" for that folder only. In Windows 7 it seems that I have to stop, go to the control panel, adjust a global setting for **every** folder, change it to "Thumbnail", accept the change, go back to the folder and review, then go back to the control panel and reset that global setting to return to my preferred view. Temporary reset of view for a folder was easy in XP and now it's really, really clumsy (non-existent as far as I can tell) in Windows 7. Is there not a better solution that what I have outlined above? Thanks, John View the thread

Sir / Madam This may seem to be a frivolous request for help, but the only word processor I use at the moment is MS Wordpad, and two day's ago the program completely disappeared from my system. I have not installed / uninstalled any software nor have I made any software changes to windows, all my former 'wri' files have defaulted to 'rtf', I had a Wordpad icon on the quicklaunch bar which disappeared, as has the original from programs / accessories.I thought the obvious place to go would be Folder options / File Types , registered files but there was no trace. I have also tried & failed with the remedies to similar previous posts, If possible I would rather not carry out a system restore. I use windows XP Home (SP3). Thank You. View this thread

Hi everybody, does someone of you know what I have to do now? What I did wrong: Turned the System to Hibernation. Booted a Windows 8 from USB Harddisk. Opened the Storage Space and wrote a file on it. Rebooted and continued the other System. I understand, that this was not my best idea I ever had... grrr I have an Event log entry indicating some further Details: Die Konfiguration konnte vom physischen Laufwerk "{7934ba4-fdcc-bb8d-806e3246963}" nicht gelesen werden, oder es wurden beschädigte Daten für Speicherpool "{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" zurückgegeben. Daher ist die Konfiguration im Arbeitsspeicher möglicherweise eine veraltete Kopie der Konfiguration. Rückgabecode: 0xC000000D View the full article

We are seeing an issue of Excel and PDF files locking up and creating a 0kb temp file that can not be deleted. This is happening multiple times a day and the only way to delete the tmp file is to reboot the server. Users are getting this when attempting to save their work from a Windows 8 machine to a Server 2012 file server. This issue is effecting our users' productivity, We have disabled the proactive virus software in hopes that it would fix the issue, however it does not seem to have had any effect. We are still getting the same issue. Has anyone else seen this issue? Does anyone know a resolve for this? View the full article

I have another question: I am looking at the different versions of the Windows 7 Ultimate (I am hooked on this software) But it is rather confusing to know which is the best for what I do or simply, which is the best in general. Some mention a GLC as the MPN (?), some say it is a OEM some just call it a full version retail version which has SP1. I have had 3 different versions of Ultimate on my laptop (I cannot tell say which ones, but they have responded differently) which all turned out to be bogus/fakes, (very, very bad luck) So, before I go through all of this again wiht the re*loading of the software, I want to make a imformed decision on which is which. It just hard to tell which is best. I really put my laptop through it's paces for everything. I have about 3ooo pictures stored, so I do lots with photography, I play games, lots of commuunications & helping with my husband's business. So it is a very wide varitey of uses. Thank you for all of your help, it is greatly appreciated!! JD P.S. I definatley DO want Windows 7 Ultimate. View the thread

Hi, I purchased & downloaded a copy of Windows 8 but wanted to test it first so I installed it on my test machine to test it. I have since removed it off the test machine but now I can't activate it on my main machine because it is complaining about it being on more than one machine. Is there anyway, short of buying a new copy of Windows 8, to activate it on my main machine now? Thanks View the full article

My monitor would not come on after hitting the space bar. The PC was in sleep mode, so when I move the mouse or hit any key the monitor and PC will come out of sleep. But not this time. I rebooted my PC and a new (different, never seen it before) opening page appeared. To the left was instruction to click on my user name. To the right was HP_ Administrator. I clicked on that and a password window opened. I have never set up a password so I just hit enter. I was prompted for a password again. Message was "Forgot your password?", type your password again. I typed admin, but that didn't work. I tried several passwords I use for web access and forums, etc. but got no where at all. Several reboots, still the same new opening page and request for a password. Prior to this, my PC would just open to my desk top, now I get this new blue sheet needing a password. View this thread

Hi, I just bought new laptop with windows 8 installed, and it was my first day working with new win8. And here is what I'd like to ask: why microsoft didn't made "metro" UI optional? Why I have to go through it every time I start my computer? Why when I'm already in "classic" UI you guys at microsoft decided to ruin my nerves with these popuping up all the time menus when I'm trying to close browser window in top right corner, or when I'm trying to run skype from left bottom corner? why you think that you know what is better for me and you gonna type "well, give it a chance, maybe you will love it later!" What is the point for me *PC user with simple laptop* to have this "metro" and apps? Btw what you think about apps? Is it supposed to be cool? It must increase my work speed? Guess what - no - it isn't usable, even simple ebay app it's like using ebay on my phone, yeah - great - I see just 3 items on my huge screen just like it's some 0.000001 inch display of some crappy new mobile device from apple. Was it so hard to leave control panel on same place? Is this control panel working better or any faster because you places shourtcut for it in different corner in popuping menu? Was it so hard to make "metro" UI optional? For example to ask user, if his PC or laptop with touchscreen and if user want "metro" or not?! I'm pissed, and I'm angry, and I'm dissapointed, I want some respect, stop saying to me what I really NEED and what not - show some respect by making few versions of windows 8 separately for PC's and for mobile devices. And I want my start button, right now. And performance - it's exact SAME as Win7, point = point, fps =fps, only "new" here is this "metro" and the fact you microsoft are trying to go after Apple and have NO own vision and plans for future of Windows OS.
