I was helping someone set up their new Windows 8 PC. They already had Office 2013, Skype, SkyDrive, some HP software for their printer, and a few other software items, such as 'Classic Start 8' start button installed. We started a Windows Remote Assistance session, so I could help them install Adobe Acrobat XI Standard. We were nearly through the install when the screen started flashing every few seconds. Although the flashing made the Windows Desktop UI very hard to use, I was eventually able to bring up the task manager to see that each flash seemed to correspond to a new process being created for 'Thumbnail Handler Extraction Host'. There must have been a hundred or more of the processes running before we rebooted. After the reboot the PC would seem fine when we stayed in the modern interface, but as soon as the desktop was entered the flashing would start. Subsequent reboots would have the same behavior. I eventually had them do the 'Refresh your PC without affecting your files' procedure through the modern interface, but when they were reinstalling their desktop software eventually the flashing came back. Would someone know what the 'Thumbnail Handler Extraction Host' process does, and if there might be a way to avoid it? I replaced hard drive on Dell Dimension 8300. Installed windows XP from disk that came with computer and with Microsoft,s help. When I start the computer I get a screen thhat says "SATA Primary drive 0 not found. Secondary drive 0 not found. Secondary drive 1 not found. ALERT! OS installed mode enabled. Amount of avaible memory limited to 256 MB. Strike F1 to continue. F2 to run Setup utility. " Then when I strike F1 key the windows starts and computer works. my problem was with google chrome said error 324 ,,and not being able to access a internet site i could get on every site i tryed but this one site ,,and IE9 said it was a dns problem ,,plz contact adminastrator or service provider ,,after trying several suggestions which taught me i know nothing about my pc or internet i downloaded a program called PC maintance and it fixed all my problems my server problem ,,now i can search faster ,get on the website i have been trying for 2or more weeks ,,so my problem is fixed wanted to say thanks to all that tryed to help. I just experienced an interesting issue, which I cannot find a way around. Scenario 1 If a user is logged into the Mail app, and the computer is shut down with the Hotmail app still running. The user never logged out of Hotmail or closed the app prior to shutting down. Next time when the user starts the computer, the Hotmail app comes up and asks, the user for the Hotmail password. The issue is that the user cannot remember the password. There is no password reset button, and the user cannot get into windows. Even pressing F8 to go into safe mode at bootup does not work. There is no way to close the app, or get back to the metro screen if the user cannot log in. None of the windows key shortcut keys work either. The only option is to shut down, and then this starts all over again the next time the computer is started. Scenario 2 Lets look at a different scenario. Lets say they do eventually remember their password, and are able to log into the computer. Then the right click the username in the upper right corner of the metro screen, and click sign out or whatever that option is. Immediately after doing so, the computer goes through the motions of logging out, and then goes right back to the logon screen with the same user name that just supposedly logged out. This creates an infinite loop. The application cannot be closed, logged out of or otherwise overridden in any way. Also lets assume that the user in either of these scenarios, does not have another computer from which to reset password or access the internet in any other way. Any thoughts? View the full article

I am in the near future upgrading from Win XP to Win 7. I understand I need to do a custom install involving reinstalling my programs. If I have used up my liscenses for programs such as MS Office 2007 will I have to re-purchase / liscenses of the software to reinstall it. View this thread

After I log on, I get an error message that reads filtlxqk.exe and then my screen turns white and I have no access to internet explorer or any other icons. When I hit CTRL ALT Delete, it appeared and then quickly went away. There are other users on this computer but none of them are affected. Thanks for your help. View this thread

Every Facebook contact is listed in my Windows Live email account, I don't want or need them there. If I want to contact them, I'll do it via Facebook. My email has been hacked so I want as few contacts as possible! I do want to be able to post my pics from Windows live Photo so I don't want to delete connection betweeen FB and Windows all together! But when I try to delete a contact from email,if its a FB contact, it doesn't give option to delete! HELP! View this thread

I have a 4Gb SD card in my Sony laptop which has a 1Gb Raw partition on it and I want to reformat to NTFS unfortunately the disk manager in Windows 8 cannot format the card but recognizes that it has a 1Gb healthy Raw partition. My outlook 2013 has has crashed several times, it basically says that outlook has stopped responding and need to repair its self. I am running under XP. Media Player functions OK for MP3 downloads, but asked for a decoder to play a DVD. Downloaded a Codec decoder but now instead of playing the DVD Media Centre just crashes. Hi, I need to find a fix for this issue I have with a change in Windows 8. I am running Windows 8 Pro and normally (in windows 7 and older) when I Right click on a folder, the default option for properties is "r". Nice and quick and next to my left hand which rests on the left side of the keyboard. Now it has changed to "o" and not only that, there are 2 options for "o". Open and Properties. Very frustrating and not very easy to get around. Any way of getting around this whether it be alternative software or reg hack or something... anything. Itsvery annoying. Im having the same problem as a lot of people and ive tried pretty much everything ive seen on all these different forums, i dont have avast so its not that, i have Norton security and its up to date, ive tried local accounts and microsoft accounts and i cant find whats causing it, i click any tile and it flashes up for a few seconds then disappears and goes back to tile screen, store has 15 on it? ive created other user accounts for my kids and their tiles work, tried refreshing the pc too and it says there was a problem refreshing the pc and no changes were made. Also, they did used to work, then i was having problems with windows 8 updates, i ran the troubleshooting for it and fixed that problem but since the update the tiles don't work. please tell me someone knows how to fix this?? Today I removed Windows Search from my computer, as the magnifying glass just arrived unannounced a couple of weeks ago when I updated windows. It was set to index search automatically and even when I put it on snooze, my computer ran much more slowly. I rarely search for files on my computer, so feel that this will not be a problem.
