I have purchased the Windows 8 upgrade from a retailer on the day it was released to the public and installed the 32 bit version onto my laptop which was running Windows Vista 32 bit at the time. I have received an error where it states that your PC needs to be restarted and it needs to gather error info and will be restarted automatically. It will not restart and I have to hard reset it. It also says I may look online for more info about this error code: 0x0000031a a quick google resulted in no related info Any thoughts on the cause? View the full article

Hi Hi When I click add roles and features in Windows 8. I am receiving the error "server manager is collecting inventory data. If servers are found that support remote installation or removal of roles and features, the wizard will be available after data collection finishes. I've recently attempted to upgrade my motherboard. Everything powers on nicely but after the BIOS it says that there is no bootable device, I am assuming that my OS is locked in the old motherboard because of some copyright issue perhps. Using Windows 7 and the Picture prog that comes with it all prints have ank/red hue. Prints from other sourses ie screen dumps, internet etc are perfect-this make me belive the printer is ok and that windows pictur prog is at falt. Hi, I have bought a new comp with Win 7 O/S, and I want to transfer all my Files. Apps, Emails,Contacts, and Settings from my old Vista comp. Any tips or help will be welcome. I have also copied my Files and Apps onto an Ext HDD. How would I restore them? I would still prefer to use Easy Transfer, as, according to Microsoft, All my Settings will be transferred. Using my Windows 8 laptop, I use two accounts. One is a domain standard user which I logon to the laptop with and the other is an administrative account which I only ever use in a Run-As context. Since moving to Windows 8 about four to five months ago, I am receiving regular UAC popups requesting that I enter my administrative credentials to make changes to the network configuration. I am connected to a stable wireless connection, so it's not a case of the connection is dropping on and off and causing something in the stack to require a restart. If I enter my credentials and accept the prompt, nothing changes, the network location, network type all remain the same and the pop-up reappears again. It's about once every fifteen minutes or so that this happens, but I've never timed it for sure. I have another Windows 8 machine which is a desktop, connected to a physical infrastructure and I do not get any of these same popups on that machine, so I must assume it's linked to something wireless. Is there a log file somewhere that tracks network events that I can use to try and determine what is causing this or is anyone else experiencing the same problems? How can I control the mouse pointer speed on the login screen?I set the pointer speed to a certain way for both of the two user accounts.I believe that when I go to the login screen using Switch User, the mouse pointer speed is the same as the users' configured pointer speed. (I suspect it is the pointer speed of the user account I am switching from. TBD. But it does not matter, since they are the same.)However, when I go to the login screen by using Log Off, the mouse cursor whips around at a very fast speed -- much faster than users' configured pointer speed.[EDIT] That is also the mouse speed when we go to the login screen after starting the computer.This is disconcerting for the 87-year-old who uses the computer. (Read: barely computer literate.)FYI, I did not notice this until I switched from a wired Dell mouse to a wireless Logitech mouse. My HDD becomes very slow, and seems hang during saving file, average transfit rate has been checked around 3.5 MB/s using HD Tune Pro, and run CHKDSK in DOS mode, but it takes forever on stage 4 of 5, now it completes 3% within 2 hours, Does anyone have any suggestions on what wrong it could be? I replaced my System Disk on my 2005 Windows Home Server but I think I messed it up a bit. I have 4 disks, Disk 0 has partiotion C: plus a bit of parition D:. The other 2 disks have the rest of parition D: on it. I got errors on disk 0 (over temp and such like) and messages that it was fgailing and I need to replace it. The only procedures I could find to do this required backing up the disk (but the backup process kept failing half way though) and then reinstalling the OS (and add-ons) afterward. The worry I had was I did not understand how the D: partition on that disk0 would not get lost nor how the system could rebuild where thew duplicatioed files were stored on the remaining disk. Anyway, I got a replacement disk (same size but higher spec) and cloned the original onto it. The server booted up and works fine but its got a bit messed up as it thinks the original is missing and the new disk is not registered. That is to say on the "Server Storage" the ID of the old disk is still there with "Missing" next to it there is the new disk with "Not Added" next to it. I cannot "Remove" the old disk ID because this option is greyed out and I'm afraid if I "Add" the new disk it will think its a data disk and not the System Disk. Is there a way to sort this little mess out? Cheers, Simon View this thread
