Hi, so before i explain i just want to eliminate any confusion that this is NOT the black screen with the cursor hang issue. The "issue" or inconvenience i am having is after POST from my BIOS, i get a completely blank screen as windows boots, then it becomes blank but brighter as the windows 8 log in screen delays to fade it. It isn't the fact that i don't see the nice boot animation, but instead whenever any information needs to be displayed during or prior to boot i won't see it. This can range from start-up repair, checkdsk, and a number of other important messages or issues. It is impossible to know what my computer is doing, or if it just froze on a black screen because it is always the same. I have a 24" Asus monitor running at 1080p via HDMI from my GeForce GTX 560 ti 1GB graphics card. I know this problem also happens if your resolution is too low, or your computer's graphics card is insufficient, but that clearly is not the problem. This is where it gets weird, i had windows 7 previously for a year and a half roughly, and the boot animation worked perfectly until the last 6 months or so. I searched everywhere to try and troubleshoot the issue, and all the last resorts i found were to just format and re-install windows. I decided to just wait because i was planning on getting windows 8, and the problem was not a big deal for me. After doing a complete CLEAN install of windows 8 Pro (twice) the issue still persists and it is more annoying than ever. I do not understand, so i finally decided to make a support thread to try and find the cause. I have tried quite a few commands and suggestions from searching previously with no luck, so please let me know if you need any more infomation to find the issue. Thanks, i appreciate any help in advance. View the full article

I'm running WHS 2011 and have successfully connected 6 PCs (3 desktops, 3 laptops) all but one of which are connected wirelessly and running Win 7 Home (64-bit). The 6th PC (desktop) is connected by Cat 5 and is running Win 7 Pro (64-bit). I have no issues with any of the wirelessly connected PCs - only the wired one is giving me fits. The issue is that with the WHS connector installed, the boot time (post-password to desktop) takes nearly 2 minutes, while without the connector it's more like 2 seconds (SSDs are magical things). I have uninstalled the connector twice and each time the post-password time from password screen to the desktop reverts to its previously snappy behavior and each time I successfully reinstall the connector, I'm back to waiting longer than I did with a mechanical boot drive. I presume there is some confusion occurring related to establishing the connection between client and server, but I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot this and would sincerely appreciate any guidance anyone may care to offer. The server has a static address on the wireless router (through which this troublesome PC is wired), Realtek network drivers are current (I even reverted back to the latest Asus version, circa 2009, to no avail), backups work just fine, I've checked to make sure the SSD is using AHCI and not IDE in the BIOS, I've swapped out the Cat 5 cable and plugged it into various ports on the router. PC has an Asus P6T motherboard with 12GB DDR3, an Intel i7-965 CPU, 180GB OCZ SSD as the boot drive, 3 TB mechanical hard drive for storage, Blu-ray burner, etc. I count 11 services which are added after Connector is installed. I've listed each below, followed by the post-password-to-desktop times (min:sec) when each is disabled, one by one: 1) Windows Server Client Computer Backup Provider Service - 1:55 2) Windows Server Connector Update - 1:58 3) Windows Server Download Service - 1:55 4) Windows Server Health Service - 1:58 5) Windows Server Initialization Service - (default = automatic; stopped) 6) Windows Server LAN Configuration - 2:10 7) Windows Server Media Center Client Service - 1:40 8) Windows Server Media Center TV Archive Transfer Service - (default = automatic, delayed start; stopped) 9) Windows Server Notifications Provider Service - 1:54 10) Windows Server SQM Service - 1:57 11) Windows Server Service Provider Registry - 0:02 (disabling this also stops Client Computer Backup Provider, Download, Notifications Provider, Health svcs, Server SQM). If I try "Automatic, delayed start" (vs. diabling altogether) - 1:57; all svcs which were stopped by disabling are still stopped. If I try "Manual" - 2:00; all svcs which were stopped by disabling are still stopped. So, it appears as if the WS Service Provider Registry is the culprit, but unfortunately, disabling it also cripples all useful functionality of using the server as a backup (one primary reason for its existence, in my world). As noted above, any option short of disabling this service equates with these stupid-slow boots to the desktop. Certainly I could disable it, then manually add back the necessary services one-by-one, but I'd likely spend more than the two minutes saved during boot using this workaround. Any other ideas anyone might have? Might there be some sort of event logger I can have run automatically which would record failed attempts by the PC to connect with the server, which I might then use to diagnose the reason for the delay? Thanks in advance, JS View this thread

i have fullhd monitor and fullhd TV. both in full hd resolution (i thing that is a reason of the problems) i have ATI 6850 Videocard so sometimes when i try to expand a window - it expending but i can't see it anywhere. So i start pressing win+shift+ left (right) until window is appearing. It seems like windows expands on the some third display! It happens without any system in it's behavior. Sometimes all of my desktop icons dissapears, so i press win+p and select (expand) and then i press win+p again and select "only 2nd display" and my desktop icons are coming back.. There are no such problem on windows 7 x64 SP1 Ult. Thats why i think is a windows 8 problem. Thank you P.S. Windows 8 Prof. x64 View the full article

From the perspective of serious/business/desktop use of Windows 8... In my opinion Microsoft has actively degraded the user experience (UX) in various parts of Windows 8, presumably to encourage we users to use other parts they'd like to see become more popular. The obvious ones, discussed many times, include removal of clickable elements and visual styles in the desktop UI, including the Start button, Show Desktop button, etc., and reducing discoverability by hiding functionality in edges and corners. We really don't need to talk about the Start button again here. But beyond the above, there are subtle UX degradations I'm not sure everyone has noticed, which must have been done on purpose (unless you subscribe to the theory that development at Microsoft has gone out of control, which has some merit in its own right). We saw some of these things rolled out in subtle stages in the various preview versions, as though to "wean" us from the better UX. They have even come up with catchy terms such as "digitally authentic" and "modern UI" in order to sway opinion. These things simply serve to make using Windows 8 on a desktop system less pleasant. I'd like to have a discussion here about these things, in the hopes that Microsoft will see that we HAVE noticed, and we'd really like them to do better. I for one believe the future of desktop computing still has plenty of life, because power and richness is what data producers and business users need, and I don't see a need for Microsoft to exit that market to succeed in another one. Clearly they have kept the "legacy desktop" in Windows 8 for a reason. There are those who say Microsoft is de-emphasizing desktop use because they want to go "all Metro/Modern", and that may very well be true but in the interim, while the desktop is still supported shouldn't the UX be as smooth as possible? Why should it get worse? I'd love to hear from you here, supported by screen grabs or whatever as examples, about specifically what YOU think has been degraded. First impressions and those borne from sage experience are equally welcome. Everyone uses Windows a little differently, and please don't be shy to illustrate how you deal with the changing UX. -Noel Detailed how-to in my eBooks: View the full article

Seriously, Microsoft??? This same error has been coming up since Windows XP! It is January 2013. Windows 8 64x. Attempting to install Adobe 9, getting this same error. I run mmc services - the services IS started, IS set to manual, and the option to change the startup is grayed out. I am an administrator on my machine. I tried the following in a cmd.exe window "Run as Administrator". > msiexec /unregister > msiexec /regserver > net stop msiserver > net start msiserver The service reported it successfully stopped and started. Still won't install, and anything else that uses the Microsoft Windows Installer won't install. I find nothing about this happening on a Windows 8 install. I am dual-booting Windows 7 and Windows 8, and it is happening only on Windows 8. Can't you get out an authoritative fix on this????? Seriously? Jacqueline Tregre View the full article

I can use Windows Explorer to move files and folders, send them to the Redycle Bin, and so on. I can drag them, or use the Alt/Edit/Copy/Paste drill, without a problem. However, if I try using the Organize tab with its drop-down menu, the top line of the screen says"(not responding") after file name, the screen freezes (but for the pointer), then usually goes feint, and nothing happens for a couple of minutes, Then up comes a small Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library screen and stays there for another few minutes. What am I doing wrong? Or is there a fault somewhere? Michael View this thread

I keep getting the a message with the following error code 0x800cc0f. I have repeatedly used the repair button in Outlook to let Windows fix the issue. It sync the problem and it works for awhile but the message comes back. I have tried to redo the set up to no avail. I've Goggled the error message and it indicates that it is an IMAP problem. The response is to turn of the e mail scan. I don't necessarily want to do this. Does any one have a suggestion on how to correct this situation. I also have a laptop with Windows 8 and I set it up the same way and it works fine. The only difference I can see is that on the laptop I use McAfee and the on the PC I have Trend Micro anti virus software. View the full article

Hi, I connected a 1tb HDD to my server running Windows Home Server 2011. The drive installs but no drive letter is assigned. I use the fdisk, disk management program to assign a drive letter and the drive appears in My Computer and behaves as normal; it is formatted and can read and write data as usual. However this drive does not appear in Dashboard - Hard Drives Tab and I am unable to therefore create any server Folders for it. If add a different HDD, it shows up in the dashboard immediately. This 1tb drive was taken from a NAS but has since been formatted. can anyone help? View this thread
