Attempting to bring a 5 year old HP 530 (they referred to it as a Business Notebook (??), with 32 bit Windows Vista Home Basic, back to original, using the 2 discs that can bring system up-to-date with prompted updates. I don't need to save anything, ANY files AT ALL. I want to return it to like when I bought it, and use the 2 original discs to doneverything, and then bring it up-to-date with prompted updates. Apparently, I don't know when to press F9 or whatever, at what time, or when to put the second of the 2 original discs in. From what I understand, #1 disc is Operating System DVD, #2 disc is Application and Driver Recovery DVD (???). Copyright dates on these are 2007 & 2008. Also, I do have Product Key. I need a COMPLETE tutorial, step by step, as I've attempted this 4 times, not getting the hang of it, & obviously don't have enough expericence at this. When I THOUGHT I had completed this, after an all day multiple-update experience, none of the prompted updates included Service Pak 1 (SP1), which I understand is needed before acquiring Service Pak 2 (SP2). Plus, most my Internet searches popped up a small window basically saying couldn't connect to page, OPERATION ABORTED.... Do I need to attempt to disable (?) Windows Defender before installing ESET 6 Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes paid version to this thing?? And at what point do I install these. As soon as I connect to Internet, the Windows updates want to start RIGHT NOW ! Sure would appreciate help with this BEFORE I take a sledgehammer to this thing, MANY, MANY THANKS !!! I have bought a 2nd hand HP Scanjet 3770. The seller gave me Disc CD 2 to install and said he would search for the CD 1. No luck, and I cannot get the downloaded driver from the HP site to work. I am installing XP Media Edition OS on new HDD. Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA6G. I have reset BIOS to defaults. CD ROM is 1st boot device. The BIOS recognizes the HDD. When I press key to start installation, I get " setup is inspecting your hardware configuration". and back to beginning and starts all over. If I miss key press, I get "NTLDR is missing. A number of computers in my office began running chkdsk after a power outage. But now users are reporting that every time the computer starts chkdsk runs unless they cancel it. I watched through a full chkdsk run (if there is a logfile I forgot where it is placed) and every thing seemed fine. On a restart after allowing all services to load chkdsk ran. I let it run, I tried sfc /scannow the result was clean. I ran as administrator fsutil dirty query C: the result is dirty, ie the drive will run another chkdsk at restart.checked around this forum to see if anyone was having the troubles I was having. I found suggestions to run the startup in selective "clean" startup.I did a clean boot, expecting chkdsk. I waited through it, and ran fsutil and got a dirty result. I ran sfc and got a clean result.What do I do now? View the thread

I have a program, that when run, places a file into Startup Folder (Startup (User)). I uncheck the appropriate item in msconfig, and in another program I have that I use to control what programs start at startup This works, it stops the program starting at startup -until I run the program again, when I will see a second instance of the startup item in msconfig or the other startup utilty I have. The program is determined to start up after it has been run. Can I use a shutdown script to make sure the item in the startup folder (or wherever the file is located) is deleted on PC shutdown?I think the place where the file is kept which gets the program running at start up is:C:Documents and Settings1 EBAYStart MenuProgramsStartupI saw a shortcut there.
