  1. download ewido update it and do a complete scan....http://www.ewido.com also do a virus scan http://www.trendmicro.com may be a virus or some other ware.... if you use the ethernet cable you will remove the need to dial up your isp (if you do) and the speed will be slightly faster (negiotable).you will then be able to configure ip address etc,and is far more easier to manage then a usb connection...run all those scans first it may find and sort your problem regards danzil
  2. well i would suggest buying another graphics card////s3 inichrome isnt really man enough for vista even if you shared 512mb of ram with it,it will still be stuttery....get a cheap vista card from http://www.eclipsecomputers.com or else where.....can you boro one,and have a check with that. regards danzil
  3. can you boot into safe mode (tap f8 at startup ) then login as administrator hopefully no password.. then just go to user accounts in control panel and then remove the password, reboot and then log in...... if not you will need to get hold of some software than boots into a linux disto,,which will then remove the password from the sam... i believe its called active passwrod changer,,,USE THIS SOFTWARE RESPONSIBLY. regards danzil
  4. what is the spec of your system,,,,,vista as you ae probably aware uses way more memory and cpu power then xp......have you install vista graphics drivers...are the codecs vista compatible.....have you tried a different player like vlc player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ try that then post back wth more info about your pc. regards danzil
  5. i dont think you may have read correctly.......dont plug anything in first....just delete any reference in device mangager to usb .then right click and click scan for hardware changes,it will then re-install the drivers.... the unknown devices what are these. what make of board do you have....or what usb card do you have.. we need more info on your pc spec to ascertain if we can get you sorted. regards danzil
  6. download programme http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/AIDA.shtml run te exe, aand then click motherboard it will then tell you the make..... you could power the pc down take the side of the case of,and trace back the usb cable fron the front panel then dissconnect it if it isnt in use......the cable will usually be in 2 groups of 4 red, white, green, black on ta connector that has usb written under it..... that way you can check your fanms for clogging etc.... regards danzil ps make sure oyu power the pc off and disconnect all power to it before touching the interior...only touch cables to much static from your body could damged hardware.
  7. looking good so far kriskalumbus. on the way to a very nice machine regards danzil
  8. ok are you both in the same workgroup,,,,if you go back to where i showed you (to see if oyu are on a domain)does it say workgroup if so,then this is the default setting for xp this does not mean you are connected to each other... you should put your own unique workgroup name in ie oakvalleygirl and the same on the orther machine..... it should ask for you to reboot, when you log back on you should be able to share fine if not re post back... have you gone through this setup yet.....is file and printer sharing tuned on in the firewall. sharing the whole of the c: isnt always good, this means anyone connected to you wireless or network can easily view those file and change/delete them too. regards danzil
  9. try this site, http://www.eclipsecomputers.com very good all round site slightly slower then others but parts are cheap and are of good quality...been buying from them for 2 years now with no issues... as regards what to buy, make sure you get ddr2 and not normal ddr for this board.also a pci ecxpress graphics card not agp. you will not need a sound card this motherboard has 7.1 realtek hd audio built in. and i would get a sata hard drive, they are no more expensive then id drives now. if i can be of anymore help please post back regards danzil
  10. have you tried updating drivers etc. have you tried uninstalling the usb's from device manager then re-installing them....does that work to do this got to start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager>universal serial bus controllers.right click the devices then click install.try them again after install. also may want to try plugging in the device when doing the install (as above) it may find the device then....i am halfway through repairing a laptop with the same issue.. regards danzil
  11. what motherboard do you have... the first thought i had was maybe you have set the cpu temperature (cut out, warning) wrong in the bios so that may be worth checking. also you board may have chassis intrusion sensor,is htis active.maybe a jumper for it has come of the board... post back your board make n model regards danzil
  12. what is it exactly you need to do..please explain in more detail..... be aware of the implications of wiring into the back of the BT box you need to be an authorised BT engineer or get permission becuase BT own those boxes.(i may be wrong,,,but we need to get permission when we wire adls, voip etc). regards danzil
  13. ok thats great, glad you sorted it out, thanks for letting us know regards danzil
  14. run all the scans is the main thing,,,uninstalling may still leave left overs....... there still may be a fault with the card, so upgrade to the latest driver to make sure........we will need to know if the card is overheating.....if so we may be able to sort this out.. do we know if the cd is a copy....if so what is the contents of the cd..... regards danzil
  15. did you download the drivers from the website,.,,,or did you get a driver cd with the card..was it an original cd... if not aand it was a copy the user you bought it from may or may not have unexpectdly copied a virus over with it.... can you install the latest driver fron the ati site.... also download ewido and update it and run a full system scan ..... http://www.ewido.com also do a virus scan online from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ are you using the vga or dvi connection.....some cards have a cable from the vga slot connecting it to the card itself,,,can you check that for damage. also if there is a fan can you make sure it is spinning freely regards danzil
  16. when you try powering it on do you get any light on the front of the case. does the fans power on and turn. is there any bios beeps......if there is no lights or fans moving,,then you will need to change the power supply, make sure you are plugging in the yellow n black p4 power connector......if the fans are turning.try resetting your bios...there should be a jumper on your motherboard for this,,or just remove the cmos battery for 30 mins then pop it back in and try again...(cmos battery is a silver lithium flat battery about hte size of a 20p). if after you have changed the psu and done the battery trick and still nothing you may want to have your motherboard tested.....the majority of the time when there is no power to the drives and fans (after a new psu) then it is mainly the motherboard... a new p4 board is around £35 for a relativly good one.... is your machine under warrenty. to sort the update issue, try booting to safe mode (tapping f8 at startup and select safe mode) now browse to c:\windows\ locate the folder called "software distribution" rename it to "software distribution.old" now start back in normal mode now see if the updates will install via the windows update site.... as for the heatsink,,,the paste looking hard,,,have you changed the paste...when you touch it is it stick tacky,do you get any on your fingers.....if not then it will definatly need replacing....you can get a tube of thermal grease from most computer store roughly about £5. when you do get your pc booting up run all relevant scan ie http://www.ewido.com also run antivirus scans too http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ .
  17. highly unlikely the cpu willl blow your new motherboard..........shame you cant check your cpu in another machine.........i doubt the cpu is faulty though ,i say that out of how many machine i have repaired and found the psu to have taken out the board ,but leave the cpc still working...but i cant say it will be 100% safe and working. you wrote I" have done as you suggest, removed the cmos battery for about an hour. Replaced battery fitted a working power supply. Power on and nothing, the HDD light comes on and stays on, but no noise from HDD" that doesnt sound to good either,,,hopefully the power isnt getting to it or,the psu or motherboard dying may have damaged your drive...... hopefully that isnt the case if so yes you will be able to use the same hard drive,BUT getting xp to run with a new board is a bit different,,,,,,xp will blue screen like mad if the board is too different. so the options i can see is A to get the exact same board (mmmmm unlikely if its an emachine i think but cant say for sure).or B get a board with VERY similar spec.ie chipset, audio, graphics chips.... there is a more complicated way of getting it working but you will lose all of your programmes......you could check out this http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk. this will show you how to make an xp cd out of your i386 directory on your hard drive...... most likely your drive is formatted NTFS so 98 will not read it,,,,you will need a computer with a NTFS format to read the drive to pull of you i386 direcctory..you will also need your xp cd key, this should be on your case,if not i can give you a link to a tool that will show you. also your rescue cd may possibly have the i386 directory,,,this is usually on a seperate partition but you may be lucky. well im really tired tonight long shift today fixing a couple of servers.....so i am gonna look in again when im refreshed and can throw a few more ideas at ya.... kind regards danzil
  18. absolutly no problem..thanks for posting back kind regards danzil woo hoo reached the 200 post mark
  19. hi chas unfortunatly my friend this is not sounding good... do you have a spare cpu to test...(saying that most boards will still beep without cpu).... unfortunatly i believe the motherboard is at fault....... i dont think we can really test to much else. can you pick up another board....can you test your cpu in another machine... Will the company you bought it from repair it at a reasonable price.....you can get a decent board delivered to your door for £35...fit it then do a repair install unfortuantly i can not suggest anything else.. if i can help anymore though please post back regards danzil
  20. have you tried mapping a drive also,,,,,,,you could go to control panel>network connections>my network places>view workgroup computers...see if you can actually see the sharing pc in your workgroup if so browse to the shared folder, then right click it and map the drive.... try that regards danzil
  21. are you on a domain or a workgroup. go to my computer>tools>map network drive>then click browse..browse for the machine with the share on it...then click the folder..then map that drive.... alternativly get the ip address of the share pc then type in run \\ "ip"\share name...this should then load the folder..... in theory this should all be done by log in script....mapping the drive is the best bet because when you load ya pc up next time it will auto connect to it... we are probably gonna need some more info really...thats all i can give at the mo...# to find out if our on a domain......go to start>control panel>system>computer name...it will either say workgroup or your domain name in there regards danzil
  22. i will keep checking on this regards danzil
  23. thats no problem....enjoy your sound lol regards danzil
  24. well my first thought would be the power supply.especially with the high pitch sounds n all.and it not always powering on....and the sparking....not good at all/. but i would also check the cpu fan,,,remove the cpu fan from the cpu, check the thermal paste (silver or white sticky paste aka gunk) underneath the heatsink...also give the fan a good clean, make sure nothing is blocking air flow in and out of the case... pcs will only usually turn off if there power supply is interupted, also if the cpu overheats.... give them a try, found yourself another power supply they are cheap enough now,,,,get at least a 350 watt, the bigger the better really. kind regards danzil
  25. is it just that cd,,, try copying everything from the cd to a folder on your pc then,re run the setup, see if it does it from there.... regards danzil
