  1. As Plastic Nev pointed out MSN Explorer is not supported any longer. For browser security reasons you're better off not using it. If I remember right it can be unchecked in the Windows Components off add/remove but not uninstalled there. Although it can be uninstalled I won't recomend that. If you have then as pointed out a reinstall of Windows might be needed to get back in a functioning manner. I would also suggest going back to IE7 for a more secure browser then IE6. As per your files and settings you should set up a new User Account for yourself and put a password on it.
  2. If you need any help we will do our very best for you. Glad to have you here.
  3. Hi; MSN Explorer browswer is quite old and rarely was it used. Your post itarts with FireFox browser. You also said it started with Internet Explorer 6. Internet Explorer 7 has been around for years. Internet Explorer 8 is now availabe for Windows XP and Vista. Can you help us out and let us know which browser you are using? It sounds to me like you may also be talking about MSN/Hotmail which is web based. Sorry about all the questions but the team and the members really need to understand what the issues are and what you have. Unfortunately this may take some time but we will try our best anyway.
  4. Hi khale; Can you please start your own threads by clicking the green "New Thread" button in the appropriate section? The thread you have posted your problem is six weeks old and we want your thread to be tailored to you. This is to ensure that you get the best help possible. Please repost and include the model and number of your PC and printer. Thanks khale.
  5. It seems you have a laptop. Have you tried a CD instead of a DVD? There is a chance that it might read a CD but either way it sounds like the combo CD/DVD drive has failed. It has all the symptoms. Even though it may not be old it can happen. I've seen it. They just don't use quality parts in order to keep the selling price down. Unfortunately the only way to be sure is a to try replacing it with a new one. I assume of course that you checked in Device Manager for any problems as it appears from your post that you have. A failed drive would not show a a driver problem there however.
  6. What happens when you right click and then click "Open" in the context menu? What happens if you click to select the external drive then click on "File" then "Open" on the toolbar?
  7. What is the make, model and number of the PC? Is this a recovery set of disks or did you obtain a set of disks elswhere? When you say Windows won't recognise it as a true copy can you explain at what point or why it won't. This could be an OEM issue where your disks may or may not be tied to the original hard drive depending on the manufacturer. So we need to know the answer to my first questions. Now if this is a full retail copy of XP that was licensed to another machine then you need to contact Microsoft to explain the fact that you no longer have it installed on another PC. So if you could tell us exactly what disks you have used we can proceed with certainty. The sound issue is secondary as the Windows issue has to be fixed first.
  8. Nick was just going to the sites. He's not using the products. The purpose was to see if he was blocked from them to try to determine if this was a malware issue and what kind. I hope that covers it.
  9. I would just like to add that a hardware issue may be at fault if you're lucky. However by all appearances you might have had an infection. Either way if you used Ccleaners registry aspect without a good working knowledge of the registry you could have corrupted the registry beyond repair. If that's so and System Restore fails to restore to the ponts you selected so far then your options are: 1. Try to restore via the method Match linked to above. 2. Find the disks 3. Obtain a new set of disks from the manufacturer. 4. Buy a retail set of XP disks. 5. Do a restore to factory condition from a partition on the hard drive if your computer has that option. What is the make, model and number of your PC. Number 3 and 5 depend on this information. Have you looked in Device Manager as Maynardvdm asked? On another note no one here is being pedantic. Exact, clear, detailed, complete etc. information is needed to get to the issues and offer solutions. Without that we would be doing little more then guessing. After reading through this thread again I can understand your frustration wanting to resolve this issue. Can you imagine our frustration trying to decipher answers or find them buried or having to fill in the blanks with missing or vague information? No one here has given up on you instead they are using great patience to try to assist you. Please try to help them by explaining so they can give you quality advice not just any old crap advice. I hope this issue gets resolved. Good luck.
  10. In my opinion you are still suffering from the basic malware infection as noted by others. This infection is not hard to detect or clean if all the steps are followed properly includining updating the scan engines before running them. This problem is now 45 posts long. Please read every single post line by line as it seems you may be missing the basic things you have been asked to do. I suspect that if you have properly followed the steps to disinfect then you have suspect malware programs installed such as p2p, torrents, screensavers etc. that are reinfecting you. If all these things are too complicated for you then like BeeCeeBee said it may be time to reinstall Windows. Once done carefully reinstall programs to avoid malicious software. Reinstall your AV and update Windows immediatly after.
  11. Do you still get the error message at startup after unticking Kontiki and or Delivery Manager? If not you might want to leave well enough alone. I'm not familiar with the programs but some software actually installs more then one program and they work in conjunction with each other. If that's the case you may need to uninstall a different program that's related to it. It might also be a related process running in task manager that is stopping you from deleting the file and the process or processes may need to be stopped first. Either way I'm not a fan of manually deleting program files and folders because that might cause other issues if there is a dependancy such as shared dll files. It sounds like the uninstaller for the program you uninstalled was poorly written and left remnants. If that's all that is left and you don't get the error anymore I would leave well enough alone. If you still get the error you could try the uninstaller program but you might have to reinstall the program first to get it to work since you can't restore prior to the uninstallation.
  12. My point is that with Microsofts dominate share of the market that they may want to steer the market to what they believe is what is best for us or them. As long as they leave choices it's not an issue. I'm sure that Microsoft would never do anything that is not in the best interest of Windows users just to attempt to gain market share. Innovations are a fundamental good business plan as long as it is what people want. Any home user want a touch screen? I'm interested in knowing so speak up.
  13. 1. I'm four feet from my monitor. I would have to stand up, take two steps forward and bend over. Can I sue Microsoft for my back? I'm using my computer all the time. 2. I'm bad enough using my computer with dirty hands. And now I have grandchildren. My grandson likes to use it while eating. 3. A mouse means I only have to move my hand within a one inch radius. Not twenty some inches. I'm old how much effort must I use? 4. Will these new monitors cost more just to satisfy Microsoft? 5. What about games? The mouse will never die. Or is that famous last words? Although Microsoft might be thinking that touch screen is the way to go I don't think going completely mouseless is a viable option. A mouse has many functions especially for the mobility impaired. Should they attempt to go completely mouseless civil liberty advocates would be up in arms. And I agree. In an office environment it might be usefull if and only if the mouse remains an option. The same goes for home users for reasons I already stated. As an option fine. As a mandate Microsoft might find themselves making the worst decision ever. Liability and user alienation issues abound.
  14. Ok you can connect to the internet as FireFox works fine. So you are still getting the error. 1. What version of XP was on this computer when you got it? 2. What version of XP is on it now? 3. Did you at any time use both disks on this computer? 4. If the answer to 3 is yes explain exactly what you did. 5. Do you have all the Windows updates? In the mean time try resetting IE7 to see if you can get it to work. How to Reset or Restore Advanced Settings in Internet Explorer 7 How to Reset or Restore Adanced Settings in Internet Explorer 7. You need to access Internet Options. Here's how : In your Internet Explorer Browser Click Tools and then click on Internet Options, like this: http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn297/Mjfreepchelp/ietools.png Then click on the Advanced Tab, like this: http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn297/Mjfreepchelp/internetoptions2.png Then you can choose either Restore Advanced Settings or Reset depending on your situation. Warning: Reset will delete all temporary files, disable all browser add-ons and reset all changed settings
  15. Hi flame; Maynard is not suggesting you replace your security. The steps in the disinfection process are all free scans and removal programs. It has a proven record of cleaning infections. Once you run those programs you should be clean and can continue using your security products if you wish. It's anybodies guess how the infections got in but they appear to be in your temp files and should be cleaned by the steps provided.
  16. That's fantastic to hear. Thanks for letting us know what worked. Others may benefit from it. Come back often. We are always learning from each other. Next time you might be helping someone else.
  17. When you clicked copy it was put into memory, the clipboard. You can't see that it's done anything. The next thing you need to do is paste it into a word processor program such as Microsoft Word or Wordpad. Open such a program and right click in the body of it and click paste. Or you can click edit on the word program toolbar and click paste. The copied text will appear. Click File on the toolbar and click SaveAs. Select where to save and click OK.
  18. I don't know if uninstalling it and installing the latest version from Adobe will help or not but it's worth a try. You need to run the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller now though. How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control Good luck
  19. Sparx since this is for your new PC I have to ask. Is it Vista on it? I know you posted in Vista but your profile still says XP. Vista shipped with Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 and has now been updated to 3.5 SP1. If you check the Windows Update applet built into Vista it will tell you if there is an update available for NET Framework. If not then you are getting this error because the version you are trying to install (Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1) is not supported by Vista.
  20. What is the health of your PC now? Are you still getting the PC Confidential Winferno or registry cleaner prompt?
  21. Yes indeed you should run all the scans. Let us know when you have.
  22. canes under no circumstance run any type of registry fixer or registry cleaner of any sort. Run the rest of the scans as suggested. quickset.exe is a process belonging to Dell computers which allows you to access power management diagnostics and settings. It probably isn't needed to be run at startup and can be disabled via the icon in the system tray. If you want it you should be able to download it from the Dell site and reinstall it. I fail to see how Cleanmgr relates to this issue but yes that is what it is supposed to do. Finish with the issues at hand like the scans before moving on to unrelated issues like cleaning your temp files. Wishing you luck.
  23. I've been running FireFox and IE for years side by side including at the same time. No problem at all.
  24. Cool Diurno. Glad you have no issues. Help us out when you can as it is new for everyone. You're the man.
  25. From a different post you mentioned toolbar add-ons. As IE8 is new have you tried running it without any toolbar add-ons? A slightly slower startup is not too bad as long as it works. It could be worse. As I said in my first post, I will wait. Thanks for the feedback kevh. Much appreciated.
