  1. Just to add to whats been said here is a link to some beep codes. http://www.5starsupport.com/info/beep_codes.htm
  2. That picture shows 24% not 70/80%. Quite normal.
  3. Just a couple bits of information here. It seems that when installing SP1 for Windows 7 that it deletes all prior restore points making it impossible to remove SP1 via System Restore. If you did a System Restore in normal mode you can always undo the latest system restore. Not much help I know.
  4. Since you can get into Windows now I suggest to backup documents etc. Also favorites, address book etc. If you do need to do a reinstall do you have the original XP disks? Any full XP disk will have the recovery console but do you have the original disks just in case.
  5. Ken is away for one week so can't reply. I have seen updates do some strange things so it is possible. Installing updates manually one by one is a way you can check that theory.
  6. In the BIOS there is a setting for changing the boot order. You need to make the CD/DVD drive the first boot device. Then follow the instructions to Save and Exit. Later when you're all fixed up you can change it back if you wish to do so.
  7. Please do let us know how things go. As for donations we use Paypal which accepts a number of different world credit cards. If you can donate that would be great. If you can't we totally understand. Good luck Dave.
  8. File Shredder does do a pretty good job of deleting files. To be honest though you should at the very least format and reinstall Windows before giving it away. There are programs for erasing the drive and overwriting it because even after a format some files can be recovered. Businesses that deal with sensitive data will remove the drive and destroy it before donating a computer. The only sure fire way in my opinion. If the person you are giving it to is not hell bent on recovering data then simple cleaners will delete/hide most things. Over time data will be rewritten to those sectors making retrieval much more difficult. I know of no way to completely hide or delete everything while leaving the OS and programs intact. At the very least there will be traces if one knows how.
  9. I found a Storm Player Exotic.
  10. It's not a monitor issue. As always with Firefox you can try updating or reinstalling. Also check Firefox>Tools>Options>Content. Make sure there is a check mark in the box "Load images automatically" and that there are no "Exceptions". Click OK to save the changes. Have you tried the same web pages with IE?
  11. That does indeed pose a problem as we can't advise on issues related to non-legitimate software which unfortunately is what your Windows 7 is. But there is a couple things I am allowed to do. Yes a brand new version of 7 will do the trick but expensive. You could try the Acer e-recovery if it wasn't deleted during your latest install. Take a look at the pdf file here. http://www.acer.com.ph/ac/en/PH/content/recovery-solution or here http://static.acer.com/up/Resource/Acer/Docs/PH/20110221/recovery.pdf Also you should have been prompted the very first time you booted up to make a factory image disk. If you did so now would be the time to use them. Back up your files first as they will be gone. The system will be like it was when you bought it with either recovery option. The last option is to try and get Acer to send you the disks if they support that option on your model or region. The cost is extremely low. See if these links work for you. http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2631 There is a link on that page. Direct link https://secure.tx.acer.com/RCDB/Main.aspx?brand=Acer I'm sorry I can't advise you on the other options. I do strongly advise to use one of the options I mention. You will need to have a genuine copy of Windows in order to update.
  12. Hi and welcome. Yes it is exactly the same in all sections. Note there are 3 different sections of the security section so you have to go into 1 of the 3 and you should see it.
  13. Are you tapping the F8 key at startup to get to the Advanced Startup Options?
  14. As Ken said that method will indeed format and wipe drive D in Windows 7 whether it is a partitioned drive or a seperate drive as long is it is not the drive Windows is installed on. Aside from that you have a ton of issues going on. Duplicate file cleaners. Many of the Windows files have duplicates for good reason and often in different locations. Deleting one can cause major issues with Windows. This is why I suggest to never use such programs unless you understand exactly what is what and never with core Windows files and this includes program dll files. Windows old. This implies that you reinstalled Windows "over the top". This means you reinstalled Windows without going through the full format procedure first and just reinstalled the basic Windows files leaving your programs and data intact. This would create such a folder in essence doubling the files on the primary drive. The reason this is done is to get Windows back to a usable state without wiping everything and to create a folder on the same drive in order to retrieve your data. After that you copy the data and delete the folder. Although some files need deleting from safemode. I've seen this with Windows XP but no other operating system. Drive C and D. In order to backup to another drive the drive would have had to be created or already exist as a partition unless it is a physically seperate drive. On some computers a drive is split for data storage. On others it is a recovery partition which is usually much smaller in size. Do what Ken suggested as it will say which is the case. As you say you have a huge amount of files I suspect it might be a seperate partition of the primary drive intended for data storage. Where did you get this version? What version is this? What are all your versions? What version was installed originally? Windows 7 Ultimate I presume. I downloaded and used a "duplicate cleaner" What program? What is the make model and number of your computer. Needed for rcovery options. I will tell you my honest opinion. Since you said you did backups of favorites etc. I would burn all your data backups to disk and format the drive while reinstalling Windows. Since you can get into Windows create the recovery disks if you have not already done so or do not have any.
  15. Hi and welcome. Let's use your other thread here. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/11790-UNINVITED-DESKTOP-ICONS-CANNOT-GET-RID-OF-THEM
  16. You should never have two real time antivirus programs running at the same time. This can cause issues. It might be that is part of the problem. I would get rid of AVG then try deleting the icons from safemode.
  17. Line problems. Faulty modem. Router issues. Poor ISP service. Malware. etc.
  18. Hi. This is not my field but I think Ken may be right. I'm not sure but all wireless routers may be limited due to the very nature of the wireless transmission technology. Although those ISP rates may be standard in some parts of the world like the UK places like where I live in the USA 6mb is standard for home users and under 50 for a hefty price. My point is there really is no incentive to offer technology that offers more. Now if you really want fast transfers with wired gigabyte is the way to go as it can deliver over 400 but that is hard wired. Gamers will swear by hard wired as it will be faster.
  19. Hi and welcome. We're always glad to have more help. Have fun.
  20. I just thought of something else. I had to disable my Mcafee suite to set it up because it manages connections. Then I had to allow the network connection in my Mcafee settings. Much like you I could see it but not access it.
  21. Looking for a manual I found this. http://www.technostation.com/document/download/id/28693 I see it has a webcam. To enable it use Fn+F7 keys. It also has a microphone and loud speakers. I see you can turn the speakers on or off but the only mention I see of the microphone is that if you plug in an external microphone the internal one will be disabled. So going by that I don't think any setup is required.
  22. Welcome to FPCH.
  23. Hi. If I remember right you have to change the security on the folder you want to share in Windows 7. Navigate to the folder Documents, right click it and select properties. Click on the Security tab. Click Edit. Click Add. Type in the word Everyone. Click OK. Click Apply and/or OK as needed.
  24. Hi david. To see if this is an update issue try going into safemode>control panel>windows updates>change settings. Temporarily turn off automatic updates. Next would be to go back to updates to manually check for updates and install one at a time.
  25. Hi and welcome. Can you please start a new thread as your situation may be completely different even if it seems similar. Please post as much as you can on your problem. Thanks.
