  1. just use the dxdiag command and that also hosts lots of info ;)
  2. Right click on the same icon - should now be pc without a cross on it and click repair. let me know exaactly what it says please
  3. It may not even apply - but for a more detailed explanation have a look at this thread I did http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/networking/3422-netgear-routers.html
  4. ok - in the bottom right near the clock on the laptop there is a PC with a red cross through it - right click on it and select show networks. and then right click on the one thats YOUR network and select connect.
  5. No problem Randy - as always if you have any questions ask matey :)
  6. a MAC address is a unique bunch of numbers for a specific network device - to find a MAC address open a command window (cmd.exe) and type ipconfig/all scroll to the top and there will be MAC addresses next to the network devices - use the wireless one.
  7. Take the ethernet cable from the back of the PC and plug in the laptop. is the network secured by a WEP/WPA key - does it ask for a password when you try and access the network?
  8. get your friend to log into the router home page and check all is ok in there. if you dont know how to do this then post back. some routers have options for limiting access to the router by MAC address
  9. Right - turn the laptop off - turn the router off - plug the ethernet into the laptop - turn the router on - turn the laptop on - now try. what make is the router - Netgear?
  10. The keys to access the network are case sensitive - other than that what router is it - Netgear by chance?
  11. Right guys/gals, I have added some pics of PC Building on one of my albums, Computer Help & PC Help Forums - Provided By Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help - Dalo Harkin's Album: PC Build Guide (Continually being added to) it is also in my signature - I will be adding more and more to this as and when I build, as always queries to be posted in this building forum.
  12. Sorry Randy - was just a figure of speach - ALL SATA drives are masters there are no slaves - so you would just plug the drive into another computer via SATA cable and then activate the disk via admin tools/disk management. Sorry for the confusion
  13. Randy, I am not knocking ROCK by any means, but come on Van Halen
  14. You can do this from safe mode - or you could try slaving the drive to another pc - its a 50/50 chance as you may just not be able to load the OS - therefore slaving may work, but if the HDD is completely gone then it wont work and you cannot get the files. Slave the drive and cross everything
  15. Think you posted the wrong link mate - proper music and Van Halen should NEVER be put together :D
  16. lol - showing your age matey :p
  17. If you plug the laptop into the router via an Ethernet cable then NO configuration is needed it should just work. as your main one is plugged in and works the laptop should do the same - this would then indicate that the settings either in the router or the laptop need configuring. we need to know if the laptop connects via the ethernet first.
  18. Just make sure that you install the GPU drivers from NVIDIA, if you look at where the GPU slots into the MOBO there should be some hanging over the side - the same amount thats in the slot -
  19. Try what has been suggested - other than that I would say that the firmware is corrupted
  20. It's not necessary to know what the WEP key is. It's simply stored in the Registry at "Software\Microsoft\WZCSVC\Parameters\Interfaces". So you can export the keys in this registry tree. Note: you have to do something else for handling WPA keys. OR run a tool called "wzcook". Here is the description from the site: "WZCOOK can be used to recover WEP keys from XP's Wireless Zero Configuration utility." http://www.wirelessdefence.org/Conte..._WinWzcook.htm
  21. Yeah - it has been details floating round for a while now - but no confirmed dates as of yet
  22. HDD's can die at any time - if it has a warranty then return it to them as they will provide a replacement. if you cannot get to safe mode then the disk is dead.
  23. give it time - when they launch their OS - it will be incorporated into that and you will not get pop ups ;)
  24. when the pc/laptops that work log in to the router - it should say show key rather than hexed out
  25. 3rd one down is nice :)
