  1. Ok - can you try and download the file again from the site and save to desktop
  2. Ok - turn off the windows firewall and try to access the net. If you are using McAfee - disable it - your router hardwall will be enough to keep the nasties out. If you do the above and it still doesnt work we need to look at the routers home page and see that its all set up in there.
  3. Ok you need to use winzip to 'unpack' the file to a set location - say a *new folder* on the desktop. and then you need to burn the files in the *new folder* onto a cd *you could use another location*
  4. Setup.exe is to install the game - are you launching from a shortcut on the desktop or are you trying to launch from the CD - wth the CD in goto where you installed the game (normally C drive) C:/ program files/ the game maker ie atari, activision etc - when in there there should be an icon of the game - click that.
  5. Hi, and welcome to Free PC help. Yes, the weather is shockingly bad in the UK (in the NW :()
  6. AVG 8.0 has been having lots of problems at the moment and are under fire in regards to 'high traffic' have a look on google and you may uninstall rather than disable it ;)
  7. Hi Greycell, It seems like you are having some problems with the RAM on the GPU - do you have the latest patches for COD4 - it is a very GPU intensive game and you really need a more powerfull card to run it on max settings - try and take all the higher setting off and run it at your standard resolution and see if that helps - if the game works then the chances are the GPU can't handle the shader effects etc, you will find this is more common on 64bit OS's as they render more of the background.
  8. 30 processes is about right - do you have an old CPU? Can you list the specs - I am guessing you have a little amount of RAM and the CPU is throttling its cache.
  9. why pay for something we can easily talk/show you through ;)
  10. Sounds like the Mcafee is conflicting to me -
  11. Hi, and welcome to free PC help :) ok from what I understand you do need to use another USB slot for the Keyboard, you cannot run the 2 on the same signal. If the laptop has bluetooth then yes you can run them through it. I think that you have to pair them like you would a mobile phone :)
  12. If you get lines on the screen its normally the RAM on the GPU - do they have adequate cooling - the coolers on GPU's are very rarely enough - you should at least have one fan blowing over the GPU -
  13. Microsoft is preparing to push the service pack through Automatic Updates. The company still has to publish an exact date on the release.
  14. Vadim Computers has gone into voluntary liquidation. They used to do some really good kit - but they were so expensive for pre built pc's.
  15. No worries Randy ;)
  16. As with all memory they all have 2 things that they need - Timings (speed it runs) Voltage (power supplied) Motherboards will set it's own of the 2 above so that it runs, but the manufacturers specs are very different and even more so with 2x2GB sticks - to get the MAX performance out of the memory you NEED to set to what they recommend on their website. ;)
  17. Randy - depending on the size of the file it makes a difference - something small it would not compress much and some files compress more than others. I tend not to use compressed files other than securing them over email etc. to find out what the file is right click on it and then its on properties - tells you the file and what it uses to open the file
  18. Were not talking about downloading were talking about general usage, and a 2:1 ratio is the MAX it should be unless you are using heavy traffic i.e downloading or playing online games.
  19. You would be better using something like NERO for the lightening - if she copies and pastes the file somewhere and then right clicks and compresses the file and then attaches that to the email - job done :)
  20. If you have a HARD firewall why are you using a software one aswell - there is no need
  21. You could also use a compression software and then unzip the other end.
  22. There is normally a 2:1 ratio with sent and received cant remember which way it is but if you are out by a lot then as Advanced suggested you may have malware/spyware running that is sending info.
  23. Hi Lynne and welcome there are power saving options on the wireless device, goto control panel and then power options and set the settings to NEVER hibernate. You can also go to device manager and click on the device and where there are option for reinstalling - on the furthest right tab there is an option that says 'turn the device off to save power' untick that and click apply ;) I am sorry this is a bit vague but I cannot do screenshots from my current location.
  24. Dee - you need to get onto PC World and see what they say - they may have provided you with a recovery disk rather than an XP disk (they are both one and the same in effect) Other than that you need to buy a genuine XP or Vista disk they are around £50 now and you would have peace of mind if anything goes seriously wrong you can just reinstall.
  25. Yes this is a huge problem  We do not/will not provide help for people who are using counterfit software - are you 100% sure there is no recovery partition on the original HDD that the retailer provided. If not I am afraid we will not be able to provide anymore assistance. I will leave the thread open for you to reply -
