Just reimaged to Windows 8.1 the other day and now I can't see any of my mapped network drives when I go to File/Open from some programs. When I go to Open I only see my local drives but no network drives. This is not happening in all programs but is happening in some. Most recently I'm trying to use the Windows 7 USB creation tool thing and can only see my local drive but it's happened in a few other programs as well. Anyone know what might cause this? I can browse to the drives just fine and some programs can list them normally. Very strange. More...

To activate God Mode in Windows 8, follow the steps below: 1. Go to the Desktop 2. Right-click and select New Folder. 3. Right-click on the New Folder and select Rename. 4. Change the name of the folder [just copy & paste the following string]: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} 5. Open the folder and you will find every utility Windows 8 has under the sun. Note: With God Mode, you can easily access all the Administrative options and make any desired adjustments. Enjoy! Carey Frisch More...

I am using GP user preferences to create shortcuts on my users' desktops. On all my Vista/Win7 machines they are fine and the icons are what I set them to be. on all my Win8 machines the icon is just a blank white square. If I right-click and view the icon, the correct image appears. But when the user is looking at the desktop the image is blank. I have upgraded a couple machines, scratch built one, and purchased an OEM version on a new laptop. All are the same: blank shortcut icons. Surely I'm not the only person testing Win8 in a domain environment, right? More...

I'm trying to install .NET framework 3.5 on Windows 8, and I'm getting the error: "The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive." and "Error code: 0x80070011" First off, here's my setup: I have a 64GB SSD hosting my OS. I have C:\Windows\WinSxS, C:\Users, C:\Program Files, and C:\Program Files (x86) all symlinked to a mechanical storage drive - This is to save space on my SSD, and still gain the benefits of boot times as well as some performance increase. I realize this is not a recommended setup - however, this is how I have it set up, and this is how I want to keep it set up. I feel that at this point, I should be able to install any software as I like, wherever I like. I shouldn't be forced to install things in one specific spot, taking up extra space on my very small hard disk. How can I override this error, or force the framework to install to another location? Thanks for your help! More...

when i go to my file explorer in Windows 8.1 all of a sudden a new drive is listed called ESP (F:). It didn't show this before today. My laptop is about a year old and now this is showing up. When I click on it i get an error as shown in the image. What is this drive, why does it show up when it didn't before and why can't i access it? The only thing that happened in the last 24 hours was an automatic update by windows. But I don't know what that update was. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/910846 Keith Aul More...

[PLAIN][boot Manager][sOLVED] Fixing UEFI Boot Issues: Black Screen After BIOS POST. Booting Only Possible From BIOS F12 Boot Menu[/PLAIN] Hello, I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file. This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0. When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties. How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu? I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file? Thank you. Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given... More...

When renaming a file, changing the capitalization doesn't do anything e.g. if the file's name is "ABC.txt" and I change to to "abc.txt" it doesn't work, although if I hit F2 again is shows "abc.txt" not "ABC.txt". This is a subtle bug but it's annoying. Any Ideas how to report this bug to microsoft? I'm using Windows 7 Professional More...

After lots of research on the Internet, I couldn’t find a straight-forward method of extracting files from a Windows 7 image backup (this is the full backup, not the file and folder backup). I finally got it working without any additional programs! Here are my instructions. Hopefully they can come in handy for when you don’t have any files in Previous Versions, or you don’t have another backup of the file you lost but you have it in the image backup. This procedure may not work with Vista as Windows 7 supports VHD disk mounting through Diskpart. I don’t think Vista does. You must be logged in as an administrator (such as the first account made on the computer when you installed Windows 7) Go to the Start menu > Computer, and go into the drive where you made the image backup Right-click the WindowsImageBackup folder and go to Properties Go to the Security tab > Advanced > Owner tab > Edit... Select your username, and check Replace owner on subcontainers and objects "OK" everything and close all windows Go back to the drive where you made the image backup, right-click the WindowsImageBackup folder and go to Properties > Security tab > Advanced In the Permissions tab click Change Permissions... Select your username, click Edit... Tick all the Allow boxes then OK Tick both bottom boxes then OK "OK" everything, close all windows UPDATE: And with credit to Proton2's reply below, we need to mount the backup image as a drive. To do this, open the Start? menu, right-click on Computer and select Manage In the left pane, under Storage, select Disk Management Go to the Action menu, then Attach VHD Click Browse..., go into the drive where you made the image backup. Go into to the WindowsImageBackup folder, then the [NAME OF PC] folder, then the Backup [DATE] folder. There should some .VHD files in there. Select the one with the largest file size and click Open, then OK. It will now have mounted in Computer as a hard drive. You can browse through it and retrieve your files! When finished, we need to dismount the VHD drive. Go back into Disk Management as before, find the drive from charts on the bottom pane (such as Disk 3), right click on where it says the disk name (such as Disk 3) and select Detach, then OK. All done. Make a new backup from scratch (delete the old one) if you like since we messed up its permissions. More...

The PC installed the update, went to reboot. Upon reboot, system was stuck on "Please wait". After waiting a significant time, powered the PC on into safe mode. After safe mode booted correctly, restarted normally. PC booted up fine. At the assigned time the system tried to install rollup update KB4457144 and failed with the error code 0x80073701. I have tried other fixes such sfc /scannow and the error keeps occuring. I am at a loss. More...
