  1. I have i7/HT processor and run resource-hungry simulations on it in Win 7 Pro environment. The problem is that while the simulations are multi-threaded they create threads by pairs and quads in a time. The software quickly create 2 threads that are usually dropped on the same physical core, on one virtual cpu after another. I've heard that in the past MS was changing HT enumeration order depending on OS and even OS subversion (i.e. 2000 and XP, XP and XP-server, they have different enumeration) Is it possible to change enumeration order via some tweaks in Windows 7? What are predefined CPU/HT enumeration orders in various Win7 versions? (e.g. Home, Pro, Ultimate, various Server subversions) ? Currently I have 1A,1B,2A,2B... enumeration on Windows 7 Pro. And I dramatically loose performance. It would have some reason Netburst architecture, but absolutely unreasonable on i7 with unified L3 cache. The optimal would be: 1A,2A,3A,4A-1B,2B,3B,4B, where A&B are for HT virtual cores. More...

  5. I have a Windows 7 machine here that needs to stay logged on 24/7 due to a program that needs to receive and send files constantly with a remote server. We noticed that CEIP would routinely log off and leave the application off, so we disabled it But it's still restarting on a regular basis, and is disrupting our workflow Please tell me I'm not the only one with this issue! I could only find threads that were solved by disabling CEIP in the first image, but not ones where it keeps happening even after the disable. Thanks in advance for your help! More...

  9. Hi all, I just recently started getting a BSOD issue when my computer comes back from sleep (it comes back, I can move my mouse for about 3 seconds, then it crashes. It will happen every time). I needed to reformat my drives anyway, so I didint pay much attention to it. However, now after I have reformatted my machine, with just the bare minimum installed (nvidia graphic drivers, all 7010 drivers, all windows updates, and just steam and battlenet). I'm thinking it's something due to windows updates considering it only just started doing it recently before I reformatted. (i also updated my bios to the most current version. this dmp is the most current. I've also run a chkdsk, and memchk) I looked through the dmp files, but all I can really find is ntoskrnl.exe, and Pool_Corruption (nt!ExDeferredFreePool+249) Can anyone help me make heads or tails of this? dmp files attached. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DdDO_NzWPdhUHChh8fm7CxhAZTFbM6cW/view?usp=sharing More...

  14. I am trying to setup auto VPN on Windows 10 laptop and created a Powershell scripted as suggested in https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-access/vpn/always-on-vpn/deploy/vpn-deploy-client-vpn-connections. I am using the same script to setup the VPN. The profile creation works fine, but when I run the script again, deletion of the profile fails. I debugged the problem and found out that EnumerateInstances on MDM_VPNv2_01 class in root\cimv2\mdm\dmmap namespace is failing. It fails with following error string - "A general error occurred that is not covered by a more specific error code..". On doing some more exploration, I found out that I need to execute following WMI query to get the instances of MDM_VPNv2_01 class, that too returns a Generic Failure (Please note I have a VPN adapter created on the laptop when I executed this query): PS C:\> Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\cimv2\mdm\dmmap -Class MDM_VPNv2_01 Get-WmiObject : Generic failure At line:1 char:1 + Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\cimv2\mdm\dmmap -Class MDM_VPNv2_01 + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (:) [Get-WmiObject], ManagementException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : GetWMIManagementException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.GetWmiObjectCommand I tried several options like running this query in WMI-explorer, recompiling the MOF for this particular provider etc., but nothing helped. I ran WMIDiag on my machine which gives following message for the MDM_VPNv2_01 class: .9847 17:26:21 (3) 1 static instance(s) found for '__SystemSecurity' in 'ROOT/CIMV2/MDM/DMMAP'in 0 second(s). .9848 17:26:21 (3) Retrieving static information (MOF) of 'MDM_VPNv2_01' (I=1). .9849 17:26:21 (3) Qualifier information of 'MDM_VPNv2_01': Dynamic=True, Provider='DMWmiBridgeProv', Association=False. .9850 17:26:21 (3) Dynamic 'MDM_VPNv2_01' class in 'ROOT/CIMV2/MDM/DMMAP' is supported by WMI provider 'DMWmiBridgeProv'. .9851 17:26:21 (3) Skipping request of dynamic instances of 'MDM_VPNv2_01' in 'ROOT/CIMV2/MDM/DMMAP' because: .9852 17:26:21 (3) - Request all dynamic instances is set to FALSE. Please note that the same script works fine on other laptops. It is worth mentioning here that I am running this script with a local user account having administrator privileges. I enabled WMI activity debug and observed following error log on running the query to get MDM_VPNv2_01 class instances: Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-WMI-Activity/Debug Source: Microsoft-Windows-WMI-Activity Date: 20-09-2018 19:38:41 Event ID: 101 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: User: INCT-ARUN\akoshal Computer: INCT-Arun Description: ComponentName = WMI_ADAPTER; ErrorId = 0x1; ErrorDetail = WMIContext::PostResultToServer, provider completed the operation with context (00000211E4C517A0). Failed with MIRESULT (1).; FileName = onecore\admin\wmi\wmiv2\tools\adapter\wmicontext.cpp:945 I could not find any helpful information related to this problem on Internet. 20. So I opened my computer today. It booted normally, but when I logged in on my only account, there is an error message saying: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive in this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location. I looked for my "Desktop" folder using the search bar, but the search bar isn't working. Please help me :( Thanks. My Windows version is Windows 7. More...

  22. I am in a networked environment supporting several hundred users running Windows 7 Enterprise. I have recently been presented with an issue that appears to be a classic Catch-22 situation. There is a folder that is nested extremely deep in the network file system. This folder contains PDF files, many of which have extremely long names. Apparently Adobe doesn't care that the name you give a file is too long for Windows to handle, and does it anyway. So, these files now cannot be opened, copied, moved, or renamed. Attempting to copy or move them to a location with a short path fails, with the error "the file name is too long..." Trying to rename the files themselves (using a slow double click, or by pressing F2) fails, with an error bell sound and no dialog box. Attempting to open the file in Adobe Reader or Pro yields the error "File name too long". At this point we may need to think about a 3rd party option if there is nobody here who can offer another suggestion. Again, I wish to reiterate that these files cannot be moved, copied or renamed as the names are so long that this is not being allowed by the file system. Any help you can offer (that doesn't involve suggestions that simply repeat what I have already said can't be done), would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Tim David More...

I've tried all the basics: resetting the WU client, scf /scannow, installing from local WSUS, installing online from Microsoft and installing from the offline installer downloaded from the update catalog. Nothing works. I don't see anything in the cbs log and all I see in Event Viewer is that it installed successfully. All other updates install just fine. More...
