Just a simple welcome to FPCH from me, telzan! Hope we can get you sorted out!
-
Ok well that seems to be the best bet since laptops are not like PCs. While it could be drivers, I don't see how. The laptop should recognise the drive even if the drivers were missing. I don't know why it had to be opened just to reinstall windows unless they were looking for hardware problems. Be careful where you go.

Welcome to FPCH Joosh! Maybe you can help interpret Match for us cause I don't understand that, do you? :D

I notice that you appear to be running 2 separate AV programs at the same time and that your issue only started after you installed AVG. Having 2 Antivirus programs running in real time can cause any number of conflicts, problems and even false detections. I notice that the problems seemed to arise when you were running both even though AVG is now uninstalled. In fact neither of the products that you are using are particularly highly rated.

It seems to me that the Norton warning was not from Norton at all. It appears that you have downloaded somthing that got past the real Norton (no surprise there.) You will need to follow out disinfection process which, hopefully, will identify and eliminate the problem. Before we post that we need to know whether you can actually get into windows either normally or through safe mode (slowly tap on the F8 key when the machine starts up and select safemode with networking.) Attache an ethernet cable to the router and maybe that will allow you internet access.

According to your screenshots you do not have a CD drive. Since you have put a disk into one I assume you disagree. Do you have any idea whether they opened up the laptop? Because unless it just failed now and assuming it worked before, it looks like someone may have neglected to reconnect it. What was the problem that caused you to go for service in the first place?

Windows Firewall deactivating itself-Why?
BeeCeeBee replied to Ancient Lady's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If you go with eset I believe that it contains a firewall that will replace Windows firewall anyway. Wolfeymole, I know, uses this package so if you have any questions just post them and you will get all the answers you need, probably tonight. -
Windows Firewall deactivating itself-Why?
BeeCeeBee replied to Ancient Lady's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Nor are we, Ancientlady. Have a look at the suggestions listed here. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-removal-av-firewalls-etc/3597-free-pc-help-recommended-security-products.html The eset suite seem to be a favorite among the subscription services. -
Neither do I but click on the + at disk drives and see if it is there. Then since you are good with screenshots follow the directions I gave you before but instead of device manager click on "Disc Management" and post another screenshot.

The symbol is telling you that you are connected to the router not the internet. Right click on the symbol icon and choose "open Network Connections." Right click on your Wireless Network connection and choose properties. Do your settings look like these? http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/TCPIP.png

Ok just be sure that the game was a CD and not a DVD. Assuming it is we need to look at your device manager and see if it shows any problem with that drive. The easiest way is to right click on "My Computer," a small menu will appear. Click on Manage. In the left column of the window that will come up click on "Device Manager." You will see a list of hardware items. One will be DVD/CD Rom Drives. There will be a little + sign. Click on it and see if there are any warning signs Xs or ?s or !s and let us know.
-
So it seems that we will have to sort out the drive before the connection. Is this generally happening or just with this disk.Try inserting another cd. (not a DVD) You do not need to run any programs from it, just make sure that it is being recognised. If it is, the BT disk is probably faulty, if not then it is drive related.
-
I suspect that your wireless internet settings were altered in some way either during the course of the repair or were altered by whatever cause the need for repair in the first place. I am sure that BT must provide instructions for setting up a wireless connection when the hub was delivered and that they must been followed if there was no problem before. Limited or not connectivity generally refers to the connection between the PC and the Router. If you were given software from BT, I would suggest that you repeat the process of installing the wireless network.

There is no need to defend your intentions Dougie, they are always good. One of our jobs is to create forums that others can read and get insight into problems they are facing. You presented a newish twist on some cd drive issues in post no. 31 and they deserved a thread of their own. A member with the same or similar problem will never find it hidden in an msconfig thread. That being said, I really am glad you are back on track.:)

:) Really glad its resolved Dougie, now may we finally put an end to this MSCONFIG thread since it stopped being that a while ago.:D

Maxtor External Hard Drive problem
BeeCeeBee replied to Southwestuser's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
A basic question perhaps but, did you buy this computer new? There should be no need to enter a password to get to your bios unless someone put it there. Perhaps it was the vender to insure that you would return for repair. You say that you could not enter a password so you pressed escape. Have you ever tried to press enter, that is to proceed as if you had entered a password. We don't know much about your system because you have not as yet replied to Plastic Nev's query several posts ago. -
You should not run two real time antivirus programs at the same time. Avira is an antivirus program as is part of PC Guard. PC Guard also has a firewall. When you run multiple antivirus they not only conflict with each other but also effect other programs that you are running. If the PC Guard firewall is running and Windows Firewall has not been disabled by it, that too can cause problems. Finally there may be settings in your firewall that is blocking the password system in IE7. Unless these conflicts and possibilities are resolved it is unlikely that you will have a restore point that will resolve this problem.
-
Ok but we still need to know about your firewall? Are you using a separate third party firewall or just Windows Firewall. Also what happened to PC Guard? Is it still installed? Is it or any part of it active?
-
Avira is an antivirus program. Are you using the free version? The Avira Antivir does not have settings that would block these settings. Are you using a firewall and, if so, which? Also in the same tools and internet options as before, check that your security settings are set to internet (The Globe - medium to medium high.)

Welcome back Ann, Just go to tools on the top of Internet Explorer. From the drop down menu select "Internet Options." Open the middle "content" tab. About mid way you will see a "settings" button click on that. Tick " User names and passwords on forms" and "Prompt me to save passwords." that should do the trick for you.

Ian, mobos beep in code and each mobo's code is different. If you can try to note the acutual beeps you hear it would be helpful. For example (1 long 2 short; 2 shor 1 long, etc.) -
CCleaner (ATF Cleaner) is a great program for clearing out unwanted temporary files, cookies etc. HOWEVER when it comes to editing a register is is just dangerous as are all registry editors and cleaners. We have all seen instances where even highly reputable registry editors and cleaners have created problems far greater than what they were supposed to cure. These programs should only be used by people competent to understand the ins and outs of each scan result before registry changes are allowed.

My friend, it you who seems to be doing all of the disparaging here. I explained why you were given the XP disk but that did not seem to satisfy you. Nonetheless you seem fixated on trying to prove that the fault lies with me for your not giving you the proper link. You are right, we should have asked you why you were posting in Vista when your profile says XP. It went unnoticed. Of course you could have simply told us in your opening post. Finally, if you are going to list yourself as an "utter fool" then it is important that we know that you understand the difference between a folder and a file. We don't need to waste our time or yours based on a misunderstanding. In Fact , just to be certain I have taken the time to review each of the 6 previous threads that you have started and can find nothing but members and staff here going out of their way for you. There was the one thread previous to this where, as I said before, you were less than forthcoming. Now this aspect of this discussion is over. If you want to post your status after trying the boot disk, and seek additional help if needed. that is fine. Any further discussion along these present lines and I will just close this thread as it will go nowhere.
-
There is a significant difference between a folder and a file in this case. You did not say it was Vista not that it matters much. You now have links to both. People spend a lot of time researching issues for you as well as other members. I see no evidence of anyone being rude to you. I do see where on previous posts you have not always been totally forthcoming and have let things simply die without a reply. That is your right but from a forum perspective, any decent forum, that is what is considered rude.

Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Mail Problem
BeeCeeBee replied to JaZz's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
There are a few, something called ntunes and another library. Frankly Jazz if you will take the time to make a list of all that stuff we can guide you regarding their usefulness at start up. The problem is that most are not and your screen shot does not show the full second line. You need to expand that second line. Saying that, you can follow the rule of thumb I have given you.
