Who Knows What Evil Lurks? The Shadow Knows For you youngens

Welcome Steve! I am not so sure about that Shadow thing though. It is the Shadow who knows "what evil lurks in the heart of man." But then none of you are old enough or American enough to know that. Well welcome anyway!! :D

Well it is supposed to be a magical time of year so good on you! If it makes people think it is never a waste of time.:) -
Gentlemen, Shall we remember that this thread was started based on a concern that service from a previous ISP may still be operational. That concern has been allayed and the rest of this (while interesting,) is immaterial. The member is happy and so should we all be! :)

Try http://support.thetechguys.com/layout.aspx?ID={aff7c922-ecc2-4170-99db-b2fe0fd2922d}&CatID={ea7a922d-7f1b-4ae4-ae55-6d5b859440bb} Sorry you may have to copy and paste into your browser address bar because the site does not seem to allow a link. Keep in mind that yours is an onboard card (the second choice as I recall) Before you try that you should check for a drivers folder here c:\applications\drivers folder and see if the drivers are already there.
-
OK we will look for drivers, Please give us the model number of the Advent.
-
Based on that I do believe that a system restore is the best route to go. The Realtek sound card that you have is a part of your motherboard. In order to be very sure you are getting the right drivers we really should have all the information that we can get about your PC and the motherboard. On the other hand if it is just the wep to wpa swap that could be effected you already know how to do that and can record your current settings. A system restore should not alter any changes you may have made to your router in order for it to accept your wpa key. You may, however, simply turn if off during the reatore if it makes you feel more secure about the process. If you feel compelled to go the driver route first please supply what information you can and we will help you find the,.

Hi Maggie, Before you read on what do you mean by security settings? Did you change any firewall setting for example. If so what firewall do you use? Since you apparently have solved your modem issues you should be able to record the current setting so that you will not have to keep trying different fixes. If a system restore does not reset it as it is you should be able to do it manually again (but knowing what they should be) and then set a new restore point. Saying that was there a point that the modem was working properly? If so try a restore to that point. Please feel free to comment before you try this as I may well be missing something that you may not have told us.
-
Those instructions are correct but I want to try to find a safe way to try it without recreating your other problems
-
Did you try a system restore Maggie? Keep in mind that if it works you may also restore whatever problem you had with the modem. You have not told us what that was.
-
Ok Maggie there are a few things to try before we get into locating new drivers. If these possible fixes fail please come back to us with the make and model number of your computer. If you know how to identify your motherboard that would be helpful but don't worry about that now. 1. Go back to your device manager and delete the realtek AUDIO device completely. After you have done that shut down and reboot the computer. Hopefully it will recognise the sound device and install it with drivers. 2. If that does not work you should try a system restore to a point prior to when you may have deleted the drivers. If you do not know how to do a sytem restore we will help you through it when the time comes. This is an unlikely fix but it is worth trying.
-
Maggie before you do anything else please go go into your control panel and click on "sounds and audio devices." Select the audios tab and make certain that the realtek device is listed as the default. If it is not and does not appear on a drop down menu please tell us what it does say.
-
While it would seem that the member has not returned and may have sorted his problem it may be wise to look for basics before jumping to conclusions about such things as drivers. In this case it may be a better first move to simply check and make sure that the sound device is actually listed as the default.

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Bigkev. Since you have not posted before it would seem you found help by reviewing our forums. That is the kind of thing we love to see. :)

Hello Ruth, The first thing you have to do is simply refresh your list of wireless connections and see if it appears on the list. Just click the little icon in your taskbar and then view wireless connections if it is not there try to refresh the list. If that doesn't help, try turning off the router for a few minutes and reboot your computer. When you turn your router back on (give it a few minutes to reset itself) try it again. Hopefully it will be that simple. Please get back to us with the result.
-
Hi Maggie, What makes you think you deleted your driver? In addition to the above information it would be helpful if we had some idea of what occurred and what you are seeing. If you know how, please take a look in your device manager and see if there are any yellow warnings showing there.

We value our members and their referrals glad it has all worked out.

It may well be and Norton is not exactly a favourite around here. Please go through the following procedure and see what turns up. Get back to us with the result. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup Steps Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware. http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/printer-selection.gif ____________________________________________ STEP 1 Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed, if not go to Step 2) Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode" On the left hand side, Click on Tools Then click on the Resident Icon in the List Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 2 Follow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware. When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected". http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn266/FPCH/Malware%20Guide/atf-cleaner02.gif __________________________________________________ STEP 3 Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. __________________________________________________ STEP 4 Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes - (direct download) Accept all defaults for the installer Allow the program to update the definitions Click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 5 Run an online scan with ESET from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you must first start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select "Run as administrator" from the popup context menu. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. When completed restart your computer __________________________________________________ Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted. If required this is the download link for TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Unless instructed to by the Technician helping you then do not download this tool. Once you and the Technician agree that your system appears to be clean then you should delete all your System Restore points and recreate a new one. Please follow the instructions here How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows XP How to turn off and turn on System Restore in Windows Vista

Good decision, it certainly isn't worth going into your registry over and even a reinstall will normally mean that you have to fool around with your settings. It isn't a virus and it isn't malware so best leave it.

That is where we were before the mouse issue came up. I would give the diagnostic tool that Tootech suggested a try. Downloads - IMEDIA 1427 - PB13317601 - iMedia - platform_veloce_imedia - Desktop

If you look right over the taskbar there should be a little icon of a globe and the word internet. Assuming it is there then take a look at this from our friends at Microsoft. Pictures are not displayed on Web sites in Internet Explorer I would pay particular attention to methods 3 and 4 under resolution but try them all if they fail to resolve the issue.
