  1. Hi Steady we need to know exactly what happened. Did you do all of the malware program and what were the results? What exactly are you seeing when you try to boot up?
  2. Have you tried uninstalling the PS/2 mouse and then rebooting with it mouse already attached to the PS/2 port?

  4. Bob I cannot agree with Randy more. One of the great benefits of using gmail with a mail client such as Outlook Express or Windows Mail is that if set properly gmail retains a copy on its server even if you never use it's web based facility. Your Mailwasher instructions specifically eliminates that feature.

  6. It now seems pretty clear that the "tech" must have set up your computer with 2 accounts one being "owner" and the other "user." You may want to look in windows explorer for C:\Documents and Settings\User\MyDocuments and see if it exists and, if it does, whether it contains the missing documents. You should also go back to the find target and list the folders contained and either take a screen shot of it or list the folders here by name. The system restore that I suggested MAY restore the original settings and the apparently lost user account.
  7. Sometime the simple solution is the one that makes the most sense. It is simply a question of creating the proper system for using your computer. Barryboy has hit the nail on the head. The easiest way to avoid other users from viewing your data on a communal computer is to not store it there at all. The only exception I would take with that advice is the use of a "memory stick" or "flash drive". These days good portable hard drives are pretty inexpensive and far more versatile then a stick. As a practical matter you can either copy all of your data onto the drive after each session or make it the primary target for anything that you save.
  8. ok read back to the previous post regarding a system restore (you may have not read it) and try that.
  9. It seems that something has been changed, perhaps the software you downloaded altered your registry. It is late and I may not be here when you return but it is worth trying to do a system restore prior to when you first noticed this problem. Before you downloaded whatever you downloaded. Go back far enough to be sure that you are selecting a date when everything was saving properly. To do a system restore got to programs then accessories then click system tools and select system restore. A welcome window will appear tick "restore my computer to an earlier time" and then next. You will get to a calander page. Pick a bold date (you can go back to an earlier calander using the arrows) then click next and complete the restore. Please let us know if it works. If it does not I am sure Goku will be on later and will add his thoughts. Good luck!:)
  10. I think we may be missing something quite simple. There are two things I would like you to do (as well as the screen shot that Goku asked for if you can.) First go to your control panel and then user accounts and see how many accounts it shows. Is there one for "owner" and another for "user"? What do they say (or if one what does it say)? Also please go to start and then log out. Let it log out and then see if there are any choices when you log back in (Owner or User)
  11. When you set up your PC were you owner or did you use your name? How many accounts are set up and what are the names?
  12. I believe Sangfroid that it has come up but only if you go manually and check for updates thanks for the reminder though.
  13. Hi Mike and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help! Perhaps it is just me but I do not know what NVIDIA kit is when it relates to broadband service. Do you have a wireless router in your home? What you are looking for is the WEP key that will allow the router to recognise your computer and connect it to the net. If you have the software disc that comes with the router that often will allow you to find the key by using the serial number of your router. Otherwise I suggest you contact your ISP who provided the router and they should be able to help.

  15. Tootech has properly pointed out that if you go into add or remove programs and then click on add/remove windows components that Outlook Express is listed for removal. Saying that no one quite believes that it actually removes the program from the system. The real question that needs to be answered before you try any of this is WHY? Unless you believe that it is doing some harm (unlikely) why not simply ignore it. If it has no mail accounts it will be essentially inert. Remove the desktop icon and forget it is there.

  17. Now that it has been pointed out that wuaclt.exe is an essential file I will leave it to Goku or someone else more knowledgeable then me to sort out for you. The malware check can do you no harm though!

  19. It would probably make more sense to simply remove the accounts and render OE moot. I may be wrong but I do not think it can be simply removed and certainly not from the control panel in XP at least. By the way I use gmail extensivly and have it forwarded to OE using POP3 and it still keeps everything in gmail even email I send from OE.
