1. You have probably opened up a big discussion here :) I use SR WARE IRON click here Doesn't clog up the system - a simple, basic browser.
2. Hi and welcome to ExTS XP originally came with IE6 ( I think ) and IE 8 would have been installed at a later date. It is possible to delete IE8 from Add/Remove and the system will revert to the earlier version. You can then re-install IE8. Give this a try.
3. So - you can print photos for example that are on your machine but not anything from the web ? Which browser are you using ? Internet Explorer ? Do you have a different browser to try ? ( FireFox for instance ? ) If not - download F-F from here and try that. click here If this works then it is a setting in IE. If this doesn't work too we will re-install the printer drivers.
4. Is this with all pictures or just one ? Do you have the drivers CD ...... just in case we need it ?
5. Just to add a bit ..... I use Open Office ( which is free as Armageddon says ) The default for saving documents is ODF ( .odt extension ) You would need to change this to the option that gives you a .doc extension. This becomes much clearer when you click on "Save As" :)
6. Sounds good to me - thanks Tom :)
7. After tapping F8 - was there an option to "Repair your Computer" ? If so - give this a try. this may help click here
8. Did you try "Last Known Good Configuration" ?
9. Hi Bella, Do you have a cd with the printer drivers on ? If so - we can delete the present drivers and re-install them again. It could be that the drivers are corrupt.
10. I assume that this is in Safe Mode is it ? Can you click on Start and type in .....system restore ....ENTER Follow the prompts and select a date that is just before the start of your problems. Files / photos etc will be fine.
11. Hi Chad504 and welcome to ExTS If you switch on and immediately start to tap F8 about once per second you should be able to see the Advanced Startup Otions Select "Last Known Good Configuration" See if this helps. Let us know how you get on :)
12. They are sometimes like teenagers .......throw a fit and see reason after a while :) While your machine is OK I suggest that you create a Restore Point ( easy ) Start > Run ....type in ......msconfig ......click ENTER Click on "Load System Restore" .......follow the prompts to "Create a Restore Point"
13. Please be patient - Etavares will get back to you soon :)
14. Hi, Try switching on and tap F8 about once per second until you get to the Advanced Startup Options Once there try "Last Known Good Configuration" Let us know how you get on :)
15. He's not bad is he :) Nice one Seedy21
16. Hi Irene and welcome to ExTS :) If you can shut the machine down normally - do so. If it will not shut down in the normal way then pull the plug in the wall. ( assuming desktop ) Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. You will be taken to the Advanced Startup Options. Select "Safe Mode" Will the machine boot up properly from here? ( graphics will look odd due to minimal drivers ) Can you get to Control Panel from here?
17. Hi Does the search box open if you double click a folder ? If so - this fix from Kelly should sort it for you. click here Line 18 > right side or this one from Doug Knox click here
18. Hi and welcome to ExTS You know where we are now - just shout if we can help :)
19. Hi and welcome to ExTS I would have thought that a format and re-install would have taken care of any malware on your system. Let's just check: Download MBAM from here: ( the free version ) click here Install > Update > Run it on a quick scan ( this may still take an hour ) It will produce a log > copy this and post it here please. If the log is showing anything at all - one of our security team will advise you further. =================== Also try taking the RAM modules out and use them just one at a time. =================== Where are you based ? ISP ? ===================
20. Hi Bill The easiest thing to do is to try the old hard drive in the new computer and see if it boots up. I suggest that you disconnect the power and data cables from the new one and use them to attach to the old drive. It will not harm it even if it is not compatible. Not sure what you were asking re "colour management"
21. Not at all Cathy. You would reasonably expect an extension cable to put out what goes in at the USB Port. Obviously, in this case, it is not so. Look forward to seeing you around the forums and don't be shy about jumping in with some assistance :)
22. Hi Cathy and welcome from me too :) Just to add a little to what Nev has said: The USB 2.0 is a measure of the speed of data transfer. Nothing to do with power. The USB port itself should provive 500 mA and 5v .....and as Nev suggests - this may be restricted by using the cable. Is there any information ( Wattage for instance ) on the fan itself? Have you tried the extension cable in a different USB port ? ============= I have just found details of one fan to use as an example: The fan requires 2.5 Watts If we get 500mA and 5v from the USB Port this is exactly 2.5 Watts. ( W = A x V ) If the port cannot supply 0.5 Watt or if the voltage is down a bit then the fan will be running slow ....... or not at all. This is why I asked if the Watts were shown on the fan itself.
23. Hi Bill and welcome to ExTS If you are lucky the new system will have the same motherboard as the old one and if this is the case you stand a very good chance of doing what you want. Give it a try. Usually - yes. If putting it straight in doesn't work for you then it is possible with XP to use an installation disk and do a "Repair Install" of the operating system. This solves the probem of the OS not recognising the installed hardware. Do you have an XP installation disk for your old system ? ( not recovery disks )
24. Hi Tom Good to hear that you are all OK now. My memory didn't let me down on this occasion :)
25. Hi Tom I am fairly certain that any XP Pro disk would be OK ........ as long as you use the Product Code off your own sticker. So - if you can borrow an XP Pro disk give it a go. Remember that XP is using SP3. If you manage to get a version of XP Pro with an earlier SP version you would need to update. I would do this first before you start looking for drivers etc.
