  1. I just did mine - TalkTalk ..... http://www.speedtest.net/result/2792655373.png Half full - or half empty ???? Slower than 57% ...... but FASTER than 43% :)
  2. Try this then: Open the window > stretch it to full size ( not using the max button ) > press ALT > hold CTRL and click on file ( top left ) > Exit You still need to be holding CTRL when you press Exit.
  3. Hi David Try a System Restore to just before the date that the problem first started. If XP ...... Start > Run ...type in .....msconfig ....ENTER ....click on Launch System Restore Follow the screen prompts. Your data / photos / files etc will be fine. This will take the system settings back to before the update - effectively removing the update.
  4. You could report to them that you got the error "Operating System not Found" and after a few re-boots it started up properly. Don't say that you are happy with it now - or that the system is running OK now. State that you have been told that it "could" be hard drive related and that "it may re-occur". Make sure they acknowledge your written communication. This way, if it happens again towards the end of your warranty or shortly afterwards, you have the initial problem recorded within the warranty period.
  5. Hi David When you say the same results ..... is the system working OK now or do you still have the same problem ?
  6. Hi Ray Open the window again and stretch it to the size you want Do not use the max icon top right. Then hold the CTRL key and shut the window using the red X ( top right ) Now try opening the window again.
  7. I'm with Talk Talk - no problems ..... been with them since they bought out Tiscali.
  8. In post 9 you wrote this .... This doesn't make sense to me. Can you please recheck the device manager and let me know if there are any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs against the Network Adapters ? This is the problem ( as Seedy pointed out before ) You are not getting an IP Address allocated - we need to find out why. Please go to the command prompt again ( use the method described earlier ) Type in ... ping 127.0.0.1 You should get 4 packets sent and no losses. Do you ?
  9. Hi Does this help at all ? click here Just another thought: Do you have cookies set to auto delete after you shut down ?
  10. Hi The video gives a complex path to Disk Management. Simply go to the Search Option and type in Disk Management then click on Settings ...... hit ENTER :)
  11. Hi Try this again - not sure if it worked properly last time netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot computer You don't need to shut it down completely - just "Restart"
  12. You are welcome Ray :)
  13. Hi and welcome to ExTS I have seen problems created by H-M-A before. Download Revo-Uninstaller from here: ( the free version ) click here then scroll down the page. Install and un-install both programs. Use the advanced option Then download MBAM from here: click here Again you want the free version. You will have to download both programs to a memory stick then install them on the problem computer. With MBAM install it and run it. It will produce a log. copy this and post it here please. If it shows anything one of our security experts will advise further.
  14. Hi Ray, Are you looking for a laptop or desktop ? How much are you thinking of spending ?
  15. I am not suggesting for one minute that you have made this up. It is just that I have not seen this configuration before - it is odd. You said you used software to search for the file and this ( File://D: ...... ) came as a result. And you did not have the CD in the drive at the time ? If this is so - this is even more odd. If you put the CD into the drive then click on "Explore" can you find ....... original / JPG Tags as folders on the CD ? JPG Tags will be a folder inside "Original" If so .... In the JPG Tags folder is the problem file listed ?
  16. I think they have tried this already Nev - maybe not with the specific filename? I am still not convinced about File://D:
  17. This is not very likely. Your friend, in the process of installing XP would have formatted the drive - effectively wiping everything on it. If you install Office ( or anything else ) you are less likely to be able to recover the wiped data as this will overwrite sectors on the drive. The more you use the hard drive the less likely it is that you will be able to recover the lost data. Suggest you try Recuva click here This may help too click here I would install the software on another system - take your hard drive out and attach it to the second system and scan it from there. Recover any found data to the second system.
  18. Hi, This is confusing me. When you search for a file the drive or partition that it is held on is reported first. For instance: C:/Users/Ken/My Documents/ExTS File://D: doesn't look right. Try this: Point the mouse curser to the top right corner > in the Search box type in Archie_Rib_jpg ( or simply archie ) Click on Apps / Settings / Files in turn If it is on your hard drive this will locate it. Regarding the software that you link to: I am not familiar with any of them. You are right to be wary ............ somebody here may have more information on them than I do.
  19. Sorry - I should have been more specific re "on-board". This isn't looking good. Try taking the RAM modules out and switch on. We are hoping that the machine will be stable and not re-start. ( RAM explained in the tutorial below ) If this doesn't work for you try this tutorial I wrote click here You would need to strip all cards etc off the motherboard. Plug in the keyboard. When you are down to the motherboard and 20(4) way PSU connection switch on. Watch the fan and the keyboard LEDs. They should be stable and not re-start. If you can get this far - connect the Monitor to the on-board VGA connection ( leave the card off for the moment ) We are looking for a stable system. Do you get any POST beeps ?
  20. Hi Not with us I hope ? Go back to the command prompt ( my previous post ) and type the following: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot computer
  21. Hi I assume that this machine has on-board video too ? If so - could you give that a try ...........take the video card out first.
  22. Hi Dawnsdad and welcome to ExTS If you can assist - jump right in :)
  23. Hi Chrissie We could have explained how to do this - it is not difficult :) Please answer Armageddon's question too. Good luck.
  24. Look forward to that Ian :)
  25. Hi, I think the problem lies with TCP/IP from here: Seedy started looking at this earlier. Try the following: Start ...type in .... cmd ...right click on ...cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the command prompt type the following: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt .......[ note the spaces ] You will need to re-boot the system.
