  1. Hi Maggie and welcome to ExTS May I ask why you decided to pull your system apart ? I assume that you have checked the soundcard is seated correctly ( if you have one that is ) ? If you do have a sound-card .....take it out again > clean the contacts with a pencil eraser > replace.
  2. I am not a gamer myself but I tend to agree with Vr5fx. The Video Card for one will produce a lot of heat - especially if it is working hard. If this is your first build then I would go along with the above advice - you don't want any problems after spending all of that cash. :)
  3. Hi and welcome to ExTS :) You say that all laptops have the same problem ? If this is the case it is either the router or the ISP. I would try re-setting the router first. Unplug the power - leave it for 30 seconds or so - plug back in. ============ How old is the router ? Make and model number please.
  4. Nice one Seedy21 http://fileinabox.com/files/2008/11/thumbs-up.jpg
  5. I have one of these too :)
  6. I cannot confirm that they are solely relay ......sorry. When you do decide what you want - make sure that you have enough outlets for your needs. Some units will have "Surge Only" outlets as well as the AVR. These can be used for printers etc. that do not require "battery" backup.
  7. Could you let us know the sequence ..... 1 long 2 short for instance. Not sure if the BIOS back then used POST ....... Bluesplayer should be able to answer that :)
  8. Hi I know Bluesplayer is more than capable with Win98 - I will send him a message and ask him to take a look :) There may be others here who can help too.
  9. Thanks for the feedback Quirkie - this will certainly help others with a similar problem :)
  10. Hi The manual for your router is here: click here Page 74 talks about Mac Address Filtering If this is enabled and your machine is not on the list you will not be able to access the router or the internet. Is this the case ? You will need to access the router to check. Using a computer that DOES have access .... Open up a browser ( Internet Explorer ) and in the address bar at the top delete everything. Then type in 192.168.2.1 .....hit ENTER If you have not set a password then just leave this blank > hit ENTER
  11. "Frost Free" ..... does that mean it doesn't get very cold :)
  12. Hi Nev is usually the one who picks up sound / video problems. He, or somebody else, should be along soon :)
  13. Hi and welcome to ExTS As much as I hate Sky I am sure that what you are asking is actually illegal and we would not be able to answer this on these forums. We cannot stop you using Google :) Keep it in mind that the sites you find will not be UK based even if they end .co.uk
  14. Not sure what this is .....as far as I know you cannot run a recovery and re-install from within the Operating System. I think you may be able to do it this way: Switch on and constantly tap F10 This should access a hidden partition. "Destructive Recovery" should be an option. Be aware that this will format the drive ..... you will lose everything. Do not do this on battery power - use the mains adapter. Make sure that the power supply is not cut off during the Recovery process. Back-up anything from the drive that you need before performing the Recovery.
  15. Hi, I have merged the two threads together to keep all relevant information in one place :) New install - drivers installed from Advent website ...... You see other other networks .... You can connect to other networks with this machine ... All other devices on the network can connect OK .... Is this all correct ? Let me have the make and model number of the router please.
  16. I like the idea of internal blinds :) Looks like you live in a nice spot Randy.
  17. Hi and welcome to ExTS There are 2 types of AVR ....servo and relay. The servo is the better of the two as it withstands voltage fluctuations better. If you are subject to voltage surges then this could be your answer. A UPS serves as a "battery" when the supply is temporarily cut off. Do a bit of research to decide which best suits your needs.
  18. I thought I had posted this last night ??? Must be old age !! I think it is a case of reverting to the image that you have of the drive. Is this stored on a different drive than the problem one? Don't forget to backup and data / photos etc first.
  19. Another indicator that it could be the PSU. Let us know how you get on.
  20. Hi Good to hear that your system is up and running again .....literally :) If you have not already done so - it may be possible to get your data off the old hard drive using a caddy or hard drive to USB adapter. Let us know if you need more information.
  21. Hi It could be. If it is sticking in then after about 7 seconds or so it will shut down again. Check this first. Other than that - it could be PSU. Best way to check this is to swap it with a known good one. No need to be the same wattage.
  22. If the disk is a full installation disk then with XP it is possible to do a "Repair Install" and keep all files and data intact. If it is a recovery disk then this will revert the system to what it was when first bought and all data will be lost. Obviously you don't want to go down this route if at all avoidable. Let us know which disk it is.
  23. Hi and welcome to ExTS Turn the system off in the usual way. Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. When you get the Startup Options ......select "Last KNown Good Configuration" If this doesn't work for you ..... Do you have the XP installation disk ? ( not recovery disks )
  24. Hi Sorry for the relatively slow response. Yes - this is what you will get. Basically you are taking the same signal and dividing it to two locations. Take a look here - it should help. click here
  25. Thanks for the feedback - good to hear that you fixed your problem :) I will leave your posts .....they may prompt others to a fix for a similar problem. I suggest that you create one now ..... it is extremely useful and you never know when you may need one.
