  1. Hi and welcome to ExTS Take a look in the BIOS and see if "Wake on Lan" is enabled. If it is - disable it. To enter the BIOS it is usually F2 after you switch on. Tap this about once per second. If no luck .........there will be a message "Press *** to enter SetUp" This may be DEL / F1 / F10 When in the BIOS move around with the arrow keys.
  2. Hi, Take the battery out and just use the power adapter. See if it stays stable this way. If it does - no need to use the recovery centre. Alternatively - battery only with no power adapter.
  3. Did you try uninstalling and let Windows re-install the drivers ? If you goto Start .........type in ..........webcam ......ENTER Does the webcam open ?
  4. Hi and welcome to ExTS Some Sony machines have a recovery partition. If you switch on and tap F10 about once per second - you may be lucky :)
  5. Hi and welcome to ExTS These instructions involve navigating the Registry - please do not make any changes other than what I suggest. Start > type in .......regedit.......ENTER This will open the registry Click the > that is to the left of the following: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Desktop > SafeMode > Components When you get to "Components" you need to click on the word itself to highlight it. In the right panel you will see DeskHtmlVersion ............. and a value. ( this should be 0x00000000 (0) ) If it isn't the you need to change it. Right click on DeskHtmlVersion and click on "Modify" Change the number that is shown in Value Data to 0 (zero) then click on OK to make the change.
  6. Hi Start > type in ....devmgmt.msc............ENTER Click the + next to "Imaging Devices" The Webcam should show up here. Is there a yellow exclamation mark or red X next to it ? You can right click on it and "Enable" if it is a red X. or right click on it and "update driver software" Do this automatically - you will need an internet connection. If this fails - right click > uninstall. Re-boot. Windows should find "new hardware" and re-install the drivers.
  7. Hi You can get replacement batteries. If you wish to recycle this then once you have recovered any wanted data off the drive and formatted it - to basically wipe the drive clean as BeeCeeBee has suggested -then any charity shop would welcome a working laptop as a donation. [ They may mention PAT testing ! so a phone call to see if they are accepted would be prudent :) ] You could take the hard drive out and format it and use it for extra storage for yourself. We can explain further re. formatting etc if necessary.
  8. Hi Ray You seem to have 2 threads going on the same topic. Please continue here: http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/13780-Think-I-m-about-to-get-ripped-off
  9. I was going from this: click here
  10. Hi Ray Cloud can store all of your files, data, photos etc. It cannot back-up installed software. Nev suggested making an image of your drive. This would backup everything that is on the drive - it literally takes a snap-shot of the drive at the time and date that you create the image. I have already pointed out that Cloud would be no use to store the image of your machine. You could back up everything to a memory stick - BUT .........if you create an image of your drive it is going to virtually fill a 32GB memory stick. I like to have 2 or 3 images stored - just in case. You wouldn't be able to do this - you would have to delete the saved image before adding the up-dated one. I have already pointed out that an external hard drive would be my choice. For a few extra ££s you get so much more space. I have already explained about partitions etc. My advice - go for the external hard drive.
  11. Synapse is the best person to answer this - but 500 Watt is the minimum requirement for that Video Card. You may be better with 550 - 600 Watt PSU.
  12. Just butting in again ......... I assume you have broadband ? Out of interest ........what download speed are you getting from here: wait for the "Begin Test" button to appear. http://www.speedtest.net/
  13. Hi, Suggest that you uninstall HJT and delete the file from the TrendMicro folder. If you get the missing file warning again please make a note of it and post it here. I assume all is OK otherwise ?
  14. He did :)
  15. This indicates a problem ( obviously ) but I am on Vista now - I will need to have a look on my XP machine. In addition to Synapse's questions ......did you format it NTFS ?
  16. Udacity High School Challenge, There is a totally free course available that you can complete in your own time. The course uses "Python" which is a well known, and used, computer language. If you complete the course - which should take about 7 weeks ( depending upon how long you spend on each unit ) - you will be awarded a certificate. My old school has entered a world-wide competition linked to this course and are looking for team members to sign up and complete at least one unit. Each unit completed adds points to the team total. The top 5 teams' Team Leaders win an all-expenses trip to Silicon Valley, California. If you sign up for the course please also join team Dee35 - it will help students from my old school. I must stress that the course is TOTALLY FREE. Take a look here: http://www.calday.wirral.sch.uk/node/605
  17. Can you post the exact error message and are you still getting this now ? b.t.w. - Our Security Experts don't use HJT anymore - it is outdated. If they need a log they will explain how to use OTL.
  18. Hi and welcome to ExTS Try updating the drivers for your mousepad. Start .........type in ...devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to "Mice and other Pointing Devices" Right click on the listed device > Update Driver Software Let Windows search automatically - you will need internet access. If there is a yellow exclamation mark or the above didn't work then uninstall the drivers and re-boot the machine. Windows will locate "new hardware" and install the drivers. Also check the keyboard in Device Manager for yellow exclamation marks.
  19. Hi, Download TweakUI from here: (scroll down the page a bit) http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/windows-xp It is a while since I used this so bear with me :) If you install it and then run it you should see down the left side a list - and "Drives" should be there somewhere. If you click on this there should be a list of drive letters with boxes to the left. Make sure all of the boxes are ticked (checked|) and Save the changes. Try the drive again.
  20. You certainly know how to rub it in don't you :) :)
  21. Hi - Don't do that ...........it is so simple. Take a look here: click here
  22. Hi Ray - this thread has moved on since my last post :) Re Cloud: Personally I would object to paying £30 / year - especially if money is tight. Also - if you think about it ...........if your drive image is stored on Cloud and you system goes down ...... how do you get at the image from Cloud if you cannot boot up your computer? 32 GB USB Memory Stick This wouldn't be my choice - for one reason ...........they are so small it could easily get mislaid - especially as it will not be in use very often. Also - with a 500GB external you can partition it and keep your Drive Image backups on one / Photos on another / etc etc Compared to Cloud - this will pay for itself in 2 years Just a quick Google brought up this: click here click here
  23. It goes straight back to where you bought it. Tell them it has been like this - out of the box - and you want a replacement NOT a repair. It is not fit for purpose.
  24. I got the same from my Gas-Electric provider - down £20/month I think they are lulling us into a false sense of security :)
  25. Hi and welcome to ExTS I see you are already receiving help with this at B-C and that the Winsock fix failed. Try this ( scroll down to the "FixIT " button) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259
